Psalm 91-God’s Protective Prayer-Part 2
Psalm 91 is one of the most powerful chapters out of the entire Word of God. It is God’s Protective covenantal prayer that He provides His children against the storms of life. The writer of this Psalm is unknown but one thing that we can clearly see is that the psalmist understood the power and protective barrier that God’s shelter provides us with.
This particular Psalm found in the Old Testament provides you will defensive passages of Scripture that you can use to counterattack any adversity that comes your way. God had really been highlighting this chapter to me impressing me to get it deep down into my heart and mind.
It is one thing to read it out of your Bible when you come across it from time to time, but it is an entirely different thing to get it so rooted in your spirit that it becomes a part of your thought process. When you have Scriptures embedded in your heart, it makes it easy for the Holy Spirit to bring them to your remembrance, John 14:26.
When you are faced with a situation that is threatening your life, you do not have the time to pull out the Word of God. You have to have those Scriptures already in your Scriptural memory bank ready to use. We are living in a time in life that is becoming darker and darker; the enemy is not even hiding anymore and is on a prowl seeking who he can destroy.
Your Holy Bible is literally your Spiritual Sword that has the power to cut through the fowler’s snare. Whether it is a deadly disease, deadly plague, hidden dangers that you can’t see, natural disasters, or evil spirits; the Word of God has a defensive Scripture for it. You need to stock up on your weaponry (God’s Word) because the more Scriptures that you have saturated in your heart and mind, the more arsenals you have at your disposal.
The enemy is after our spouse, our children, and our family. Psalm 91 is a powerful warfare weapon that you can use as a protective shield against the snares and the wiles of the devil. Let it be the prayer that you pray over your family the moment that you wake up every morning. The Lord had me learn it, digest it, and apply it to my daily life and you should do the same!
Psalm 91:1-2 gives us the Lord’s stipulations for receiving this protective covering as well as your declaration of Who the Lord is to you. Now we are going to go into the actual promises found in this amazing Psalm.
If you haven’t read the first article pertaining to this topic, please take the time to read it. It is called: Psalm 91-God’s Protective Prayer-Part 1.
Psalm 91:3
“Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence.”
In this passage of Scripture we can see that there is a shift in the Psalm as the writer is now disclosing the promises that the Lord is giving us. It begins with a very powerful word and that is “surely.” This is a word that is said with confidence and absolutely no doubt meaning that the writer is in full belief that God will do what is being described in this passage of Scripture.
Some of the most amazing attributes of God is that He truthful and is very faithful. Numbers 23:19 discloses, “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?” In this passage we can plainly determine that if God said it, He means it. It really boils down to whether we believe that His Word is the absolute truth or we don’t.
Let’s take a closer look at this particular passage of Scripture Psalm 91:3. The words “shall deliver you” being used is the Hebrew word “nāṣal” which means: to snatch away, deliver, rescue, save, strip, and plunder. The words “from the snare” being used is the Hebrew word “paḥ” which means: of calamities, plots, source of agent of calamity.
The words “of the fowler” being used is the Hebrew word “yāqôš” which means: fowler, trapper, and bait-layer. The word “perilous” being used is the Hebrew word “haûâ” which means: engulfing ruin, destruction. The word “pestilence” being used is the Hebrew word “deḇer” which means: plague and pestilence in general.
After dissecting the key phrases in this passage of Scripture what we can conclude is that the writer is making it known to us that the Lord “SHALL” rescue and save you from any snare of the devil, any calamity, destructive plague, calamitous pestilence, and any other source that is trying to bring your life to an engulfing ruin! This sounds like some really powerful protection.
So God is letting us know as His children that He will protect us against the traps that the enemy will try to put in our path. The diseases and plagues that are affecting those around you will not touch you because of the wall of protection that God has around you. Psalm 34:19 reveals, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.” The key word to pay attention to in the passage of Scripture is the word “ALL.” As long as you are living your life upright before the Lord, He will deliver you from all afflictions.
One thing that you want to do is have an understanding of the stipulations that the Lord is giving us so that we can qualify for this powerful protection. A lot of times a believer of Jesus Christ will think that all it takes to receive God’s amazing promises is to become a Christian. God’s Word is filled with Biblical rules and stipulations that He expects us to abide by if we want to obtain the assurances found in His Word.
It would be very difficult for you to avoid the destruction that the enemy has waiting for you if you have open doors allowing him to have legal access into your life. It is so important that we read the Word of God, study it, digest it, and apply it to our daily lives. The guidelines on how we are to live our lives as believers of Jesus Christ are laid out for us in the Lord’s Word.
Let’s take a look at some more amazing promises in this powerful Psalm.
Psalm 91:4
“He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.”
In this verse of Scripture we can see that the writer of this Psalm is giving us more of the Lord’s amazing promises. Once again these assurances are conditional and are dependent solely on whether or not you are following through will the stipulations provided to receive these incredible guarantees. What are the conditions that the Lord requires?
Psalm 91:1 discloses, “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” God is abundantly clear that the person that dwells (remains and abides) in the hiding place with the Lord are the ones that will stay in His shadow of protection. In order for someone to be within a shadow that symbolizes closeness and familiarity.
Now let’s break down what the Lord is disclosing to us in the first part of Psalm 91:4. The words “He shall cover” being used is the Hebrew word “sāḵaḵ” which means: to screen, or cover. The words “with His feathers” being used is the Hebrew word “’ēḇrâ” which means: pinion, wing, of bird (ostrich, eagle, dove). The words “His wings” being used is the Hebrew word “kānāp̄” which means: wing, as protector of His people. The words “shall take refuge” being used here is the Hebrew word “ḥāsâ” which means: to seek refuge, put trust in God.
As we analyze the words of this Psalm we can determine that God is making it known that He will cover us with His wings as our protective armor. What does that mean exactly? The way that a bird protects her young under her wings is the same way that the Lord shelters us giving us a place to seek refuge in times of trouble.
It doesn’t matter what kind of circumstance that you are facing, God is your defense and security that you can depend on. He promises us that He will never leave us nor forsake us, Deuteronomy 31:6. This promise is reiterated in the New Testament found in Hebrews 13:5 when He mentions that He will never leave our side. We have to get to a place with the Lord where we believe His Word at face value with no doubt or unbelief.
The second part of the powerful passage states, “His truth shall be your shield and buckler.” The words “His truth” being used is the Hebrew word “‘ĕmeṯ” which means: faithfulness and reliableness. The word shield being used is the Hebrew word “ṣinnâ” which means: large shield that covers the whole body. The words “and buckler” being used is the Hebrew word “sōḥērâ” which means: buckler, shield, figurative of faithfulness.
The psalmist through the leading of the Holy Spirit is revealing to us that God is faithful and reliable and will never fail you. If His Word provides us with a promise then He is faithful to follow through with that promise. In fact the Lord puts His Word even above His own name, Psalm 138:2. That is an extremely important fact because God is saying that His word can be seen as the infallible truth. We need to make it our mission to grab a hold of these promises and make them our own.
Then the Lord begins to describe the guarantee of being two different kinds of shields. One shield protects your entire body and the buckler is a small round shield used for close combat. So any kind of battle that you are facing in life whether it is an enemy at close range or an enemy shooting arrows at you from afar, God has you completely covered.
Conclusion
There is no doubt about it that Psalm 91 is one of the most powerful protective covenantal prayers in the entire Word of God. It covers any kind of storm, trial, tribulation, or warfare that you will ever come across. It is so important that you have a clear understanding of what this Psalm is teaching you so that you can properly apply it to your daily life.
Allow the passages of Scripture found in this Psalm to marinate in your heart and mind. When you are in the middle of a situation that threatens your life, you aren’t going to have time to open up your Bible and search through the Lord’s Word. You have to have it already deep down in your spirit. The more Scriptures that you have in your Scriptural memory bank, the more arsenals you have at your disposal!
