Know Who You are in Christ-You are Given an Inheritance

What exactly does it mean when God states that we have an inheritance gifted to us when we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ? Three passages of Scripture break down exactly what this means. Hebrews 1:2 states, “God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds.”

The second and third passages of Scripture are found in Romans 8:16-17 and they state, “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.”

So what these verses are telling us is that because of the atoning work of Jesus Christ which was: His death, burial, and resurrection on the cross at Calvary we have been given an inheritance as co-heirs with Him. What a tremendous gift that we receive as believers of Jesus Christ along with every other blessing that we have been afforded.

Our inheritance will be stored up in heaven and that is why our goal is not to focus on earthly things but to focus on eternal things. God is very clear regarding misplaced attention concerning our treasures. Matthew 6:19-20 details, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.”

What we can gather from this text is that our material possessions are not things that we should put a lot of attention on. We can have the biggest house, the best car, the most expensive clothes, and shoes but when we pass away those things cannot come with us. That is why the Lord is making it clear to us that our primary focus needs to be set on Heaven.

Another verse of Scripture that gives us more detail about where the Lord expects our focus to be is found in 2 Corinthians 4:18. It states, “While we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”

Here we can definitively see that God is revealing to us that things on Earth are temporary and will go away. Our focus has to remain on the things that are eternal that we cannot see with the naked eye. That is what will truly matter when we pass away. Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the inheritance that we have been given so that we can have more of an understanding.

Some examples include but not limited to:

We are considered Justified:

Romans 3:24 “Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”

There is no condemnation:

Romans 8:1 “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.”

Freedom from sin and death:

Romans 8:2 “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.”

We are Sanctified through Christ:

1 Corinthians 1:2 “To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours.”

Right standing because of Christ:

1 Corinthians 1:30 “But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption.”

New Creation through Christ:

2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”

Become one in Christ Jesus:

Galatians 3:28 “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

Salvation with eternal glory:

2 Timothy 2:10 “Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.”

These are just a few of the amazing opportunities that we have been afforded as believers of Jesus Christ because of what He did on the cross at Calvary. It is to our benefit that we understand what those opportunities are. Once you can fully comprehend what is included in your inheritance you won’t misapply your attention on earthly things.

Matthew 6:33 discloses to us, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” When you keep your focus on the Lord and abide by the stipulations written in His Word, all things will be added unto you. You won’t have to worry about what will happen tomorrow because God is already there, Matthew 6:34.

The final thing that I want to make sure that I mention is the warning that God gives us regarding actions that will keep you from your inheritance. Galatians 5-19:21 details, “Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

Every one of the works of the flesh that the Apostle Paul is listing in these passages of Scripture are open doors to the enemy. If you allow those open doors to stay open causing you to habitually sin without repentance, you could lose your inheritance in the Kingdom of God. That is not a place that you want to be in and it is not worth the risk.

Conclusion

One of the most amazing blessings that a believer of Jesus Christ can obtain is eternal life with Him in heaven. Our Lord didn’t stop there, His death, burial, and resurrection on the cross at Calvary is afforded us with so many opportunities and one of them being an inheritance.

It is so vital that we gain a clear understanding of what our inheritance entails and the stipulations attached to it. The best way that we all can gain pure revelation on the inheritance that Jesus’ death on the cross has afforded us to have is by reading God’s Word. Make is a point to study it, digest it, and apply it to your daily life.
