Your Inheritance through Christ-Salvation
The death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ have afforded us so many amazing gifts including the free gift of salvation. What exactly does salvation mean? Why do we need salvation to begin with? In order to answers these questions, we need to go back to the very beginning with the first man Adam and the first woman Eve.
Genesis 3:2-3 is very specific when the Word of God discloses, “And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ”
These Bible verses out of the Old Testament disclose the consequences of Adam and Eve’s disobedience, they shall surely die. Death was introduced to all of humanity through this act of defiance. The words “you die” being used here is the Hebrew word “mûṯ” which means: inflicted by God. This particular death is not just pertaining to physical death but it is also pertaining to spiritual death and separation from God.
Due to the separation that Adam and Eve creation with God we were in need of a Savior that was going to reconcile that separation bringing us back in right standing with God. This brings us back to our first two initial questions: what is salvation and why do we need it? Salvation simply put is saving humanity from sin and its consequences including complete separation from God.
Jesus Christ died a horrific death at the Cross at Calvary so that He could pay the sin debt for the entire human race. His death reconciled us back to God as 2 Corinthians 5:18 details, “Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation.”
Another passage of Scripture that highlights the reconciliation back to God is found in Colossians 1:19-20 and it states, “For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.”
Through these three verses of Scripture out of the Holy Bible we can see beyond a shadow of a doubt that the blood that was shed by our Lord Jesus Christ is what is allowing us the opportunity to be reconciled back to our Heavenly Father. The reason why this is so significant is because reconciliation is what is saving us from eternal separation from God.
It is giving the children of God the chance at eternal salvation and eternal life in the presence of God in the Kingdom of Heaven for eternity. There is no greater feeling than that! One of the main things that we want to have a clear understanding about when it comes to the free gift of salvation is the fact that it is not something that you can earn on your own.
Ephesians 2:8-9 is very conclusive when the Apostle Paul through the leading of the Holy Spirit states, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” The words “by grace” being used here is the Greek Word “charis” which means: kindness which bestows upon one what he has not deserved.
In other words it is something given to you by the Lord that you do not deserve. He is giving it to you out of the goodness of His heart, underserved favor. Then when we take a closer look at the verses that I am highlighting and they disclose some very crucial information for us. Paul writes, “…it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
The free gift of eternal salvation is a part of our inheritance as God’s people and it is something that we cannot work our way towards. Unfortunately there are a lot of professing Christians that think that the message of salvation is works based and disregard this passage that clearly states that it is a gift of God. Then the Apostle says something key when he states that nobody can boast.
One thing that the Lord hates is pride and so He makes it plain to us that we cannot boast thinking that the merits or acts that we have done will grant us salvation. That is far from the truth. The bottom line is once we get saved, we want to do things to promote the everlasting gospel of Jesus Christ because we want others to get saved.
When we begin to share the Word of God to others thinking that it will “work” our way up to salvation that is when we will get ourselves into trouble. God is very clear that we do not have to do anything to be saved but believe on the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior, Acts 16:31. Everything else that we do for the Kingdom of God other than that is because of our love for the Lord.
Let’s take a look at a passage of Scripture pertaining to our salvation being granted to us through Christ.
2 Timothy 2:10
“Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.”
This verse of Scripture makes it very plain regarding the fact that salvation has to come through the shed blood of Jesus Christ. The word “elect” being used is the Greek word “eklektos” which means the chosen or elect of God. The Apostle Paul is telling us that he had to endure all things throughout his Christian life in order to spread the Word of Truth (gospel of Christ).
Paul did whatever he could for the sake of the gospel of Jesus Christ even if he had to undergo hardships in the process. The free gift of salvation is something that none of us should take lightly and the Apostle Paul understood that. We need to do the same and spread the love of Jesus Christ everywhere that we go as the Lord commanded us to do.
You will face persecution just as Paul did but at the end of the day to live is Christ and to die is gain, Philippians 1:21. Once you become a follower of Jesus, you want to share your Christian faith knowing that there are many people lost blinded not knowing Christ as their Savior. We have been afforded the opportunity to have the free gift of salvation and it is not something that the Lord wants us to keep to ourselves.
A passage of Scripture pertaining to salvation that you can share with others is found in Hebrews 10:14. It states, “For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.” Here we can see that the writer of Hebrews is disclosing to us that it is through the one offering made by Jesus Christ we are being sanctified. If it wasn’t for the perfect sacrifice that He made we would not have the option of salvation.
Another verse of Scripture that also describes salvation being available through Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ alone is Acts 4:12. It details, “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” The fact of the matter is that Jesus Christ is the One that died for us and it is by His Name that we are truly saved.
Conclusion
The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ have afforded us so many blessings including the gift of salvation. It isn’t something that we can gain on our own but it has already been given to us through our inheritance. We can never forget that it was the shed blood of Jesus Christ that has allowed us to be reconciled back to God the Father in the first place.
We need to do our part as believers and spread the good news of the gospel letting others know what they too can be saved and live for eternity with Jesus Christ. The Lord never saved us so that we can keep it to ourselves; we have to tell our family, friends, and anyone that will listen. Time is so short and there are people dying every second eternally lost separated from our Heavenly Father for eternity!
