The Power of Repentance-The Message of Repentance
The need for repentance is a constant theme throughout the entire Bible: Old Testament and New Testament. When we analyze the Old Testament we can see how the Lord used His prophets to warn His people to repent and to turn away from their wicked ways.
Some examples of prophets from the Old Testament warning the children of Israel include:
Ezekiel 14:6 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Repent, turn away from your idols, and turn your faces away from all your abominations.”
Isaiah 55:7 “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.”
Joel 2:13 “So rend your heart, and not your garments; return to the Lord your God, for His is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness; and He relents from doing harm.”
1 Samuel 7:3 “Then Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, “If you return to the Lord with all your hearts, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths from among you, and prepare your hearts for the Lord, and serve Him only; and He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.”
Here we can see many times where the prophets of God warned His children so that they would have time to repent and to get things right with the Lord. Unfortunately a lot of times they would not heed to the prophets words to put away their idols and turn from their wicked ways. So the outcome of their disobedience always led to calamity, war, and destruction.
We can perceive that happening in the lives of so many Christians today. They say they are a Christian out of their mouths but their actions suggest otherwise. What ends up happening is their inability to repent and truly turn from their wicked ways leads to doors opening up to the enemy to come right on in and wreak havoc.
That is why it is vital that you get into the Word of God and study to show yourself approved with the ability to rightly divide God’s Truth, 2 Timothy 2:15. What that will do is allow the Holy Spirit to have a Scriptural memory bank to pull from to bring to your remembrance when He needs to. Renewing your frame of mind is crucial to living a life free from sin and out of the chains of bondage to the devil and his demons.
The New Testament Message of Repentance
The message of repentance didn’t stop with the Old Testament but continued throughout the New Testament. We can see this referenced in many passages of Scripture from people that played extremely important roles in spreading the Kingdom message of God.
John the Baptist:
Mark 1:4 “John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.”
John the Baptist was the cousin of Jesus Christ and was filled with the Holy Spirit from his mother’s womb. One of his main goals was to prepare the way of the Lord and make His crooked path straight, Mark 1:3. We can see in the text above how he planned on fulfilling his task: he was going to preach a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.
As he cried out in the wilderness, the areas that heard his message went to him to confess their sins and they were baptized in the Jordan River. Notice how the first thing that John the Baptist preached was for everyone to repent and turn away from their sins so that they could be pardoned from the penalty of their transgressions.
One thing we know is that John the Baptist was paving the way for the Lord Jesus Christ. The main thing that he needed to do is to make sure that those that heard the gospel message understood the significance of repentance. Matthew 3:1-2 also gives us detailed information pertaining to John the Baptism preaching repentance.
It states, “In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” We can also see the prophecy of the prophet Isaiah regarding John the Baptist found in Isaiah 40:3 and it states, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness; prepare the way of the Lord; make straight the desert a highway for our God.”
The words “make straight” being used by the prophet Isaiah is the Hebrew word “yāšar” which means: to make upright and straightforward in the ethical sense, to make smooth, and straight. So what Isaiah is saying here is the fact that John the Baptist is going to ensure that he leads every one that he comes into contact with to repentance living a life upright and righteous. This would allow their heart posture to be ready to receive the Word of God through Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ:
Mark 1:14-15 “Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”
Here we can see that the Lord Jesus Christ is telling His believers that God’s Kingdom is near and that everyone needed to repent. Then He mentions believing in the Gospel. That lets us know just how significant it really is to truly repent from your heart. What that does is make it easier for the Word of God to get into your heart and mind.
Both John and Jesus Himself made it very clear that the Kingdom of Heaven was at hand or “near.” What that should do is give us a sense of urgency to get our lives in order when it comes to being obedient to the Lord and His Word. We can never forget that our lives are like a vapor (James 4:14) and we do not know what tomorrow will bring.
That is why the Lord mentions things like “…Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation,” 2 Corinthians 6:2. Today is the day of salvation and we do not have time to waste when it comes to our eternal lives. Repentance is a key aspect of us having the ability to wash away our sins, ask the Lord for forgiveness, and get our lives right with God.
Peter:
Acts 3:19 “Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.”
After making a lame man walk through the power of God, Peter stands up and lets the people know that they need to repent for their sins so that they could be blotted out and no longer remembered. Another passage of Scripture that highlights where Peter is preaching repentance is found in Acts 2:38.
It states, “Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Notice how there is an added difference in Peter’s message versus the message of John the Baptist and Jesus Christ. Peter adds the fact that every believer receives the free gift of the Holy Spirit.
The reason why this is so important is because of the fact that the Holy Spirit is the One that will give believers the power to overcome the temptations of sin. He is the One that will guide us into absolute Truth (John 16:13) and He is the One that will bring Scriptures your remembrance (John 14:26). This is crucial when it comes to living a repentant life upright in the eyes of the Lord.
Conclusion
The Gospel Message has and always will begin with repent because the Kingdom of God is at hand. It is a decision that you make in your heart that you are going to turn away from your old ways and become a new creation in Jesus Christ. The best way to ensure that you are able to remain on the right path of righteousness after genuine repentance is to get into the Word of God and stay in His Word.
What this will do is help your transform your entire mindset understanding the importance of living an obedient life. John the Baptist paved the way with the message of repentance and Jesus picked up with the same message and continued it. We also see the Apostle Peter preaching the same message of repentance. That is how significant it truly is!
