Weapons of Warfare-The Name of Jesus

In order for us to understand the weapons of war we need to put into perspective who we are actually warring with. The Apostle Paul said it perfectly when he stated in Ephesians 6:12 “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

Here we can see that Paul through the leading of the Holy Spirit is letting us know that our battle is not with your neighbor, your boss, your spouse, a family member, or even an enemy. Your fight is with the devil and his highly structured demonic kingdom. Satan is not a made up fictional character like people make him out to be, he is very real and very powerful and within your own strength there is no way that you can overcome him.

One thing we need to realize is that because of the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, he is a defeated foe. The Lord disarmed and triumphed over the devil and all evil spirits making a public spectacle of them openly, Colossians 2:14-15. The power in Jesus’ Name gives you the authority to bind the demonic attacks of the enemy and live a life free from the chains that he will attempt to put you in.

The enemy doesn’t come into your life to play games, he is there to steal, kill, and destroy you and that is what he will do if you let him, John 10:10! I fell victim to the devil’s schemes and opened up so many doors in my life and the enemy took full advantage. I was a victim of demonic oppression mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically and I really didn’t know if I was going to make it through, but God!

I had no knowledge of the spiritual realm let alone the demonic forces that operate in that kingdom. The Word of God tells us that we are destroyed for lack of knowledge, Hosea 4:6. That is why it is so vital that you get into your Bible, read it, and study it, so that you can have an understanding of the weapons of war that the Lord has afforded you to have to defeat the snares of the enemy.

You are in a spiritual battle whether you want to believe it or not. That is why the Apostle Paul tells us in Ephesians 6:11 “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” There is a kingdom of darkness (Satan’s kingdom) and a kingdom of light (God’s Kingdom) battling daily for your soul. God’s kingdom promises us life eternally with Jesus Christ (John 3:36) while the other one promises us eternal hell in the lake of fire, Revelation 20:15.

The spiritual realm is governed by spiritual laws established by the Lord that both kingdoms (the kingdom of light and the kingdom of darkness) have to abide by, 1 John 3:4. We have to make sure that we don’t become susceptible to the devil’s devices and learn how to use the weapons of war to overcome his schemes.

One of the greatest weapons of warfare that we have access to is the Name of Jesus! Let’s take a look at the passages of Scripture that disclose this amazing truth.

Philippians 2:9-10

“Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth.”

The Apostle Paul is letting us know that the Name of Jesus is exalted above any other name there is. The words “has highly exalted” being used here is the Greek word “hyperypsoō” which means: to exalt to the highest rank and power, raise to supreme majesty. In other words when you use the Name of Jesus Christ you are speaking out the highest ranking, most powerful, and supreme Name there is.

Then Paul goes even further with his description stating that every knee will bow down to His Name in heaven, on earth, and under the earth. The words “under the earth” being used here is the Greek word “katachthonios” which means: those who dwell in the world below, departed souls (the dead that have departed and went to hell, evil spirits, and other evil entities that are under the earth).

This pretty much covers any created being that was ever made including evil spirits. Remember, Jesus triumphed over the devil’s entire demonic kingdom when He died and rose again, Colossians 2:14-15. He gave us the authority over Satan and every evil spirit that would try to come against us. Luke 10:19 reveals, “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”

There is so much power in the Name of Jesus Christ and the Lord has given us His Name to use as a spiritual weapon against Satan and his devices. The demons know the potency of the Name of Jesus and they tremble, James 2:19. If you are ever in a situation where you are being terrorized, oppressed, or harassed by the devil speak out the Name of Jesus and they will flee.

There have been so many testimonies given of people getting spiritually attacked especially in their sleep (sleep paralysis) where they feel pinned down and cannot move. The only thing that causes that unseen evil spirit to let them go is the Name of Jesus; there is no other name that has that kind of weight and authority in the spiritual realm than His Name.

Jesus’ Name has authority over sickness, disease, and every demon regardless of how powerful. Mark 16:17-18 details, “And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

The key word in these passages of Scripture is the word “believe” which is the Greek word “pisteuō” which means: used especially of the faith by which a man embraces Jesus, conjoined with obedience to Christ. You have to have belief that Jesus Christ is Who He says He is and that you have authority in His Name.

If you attempt to engage in spiritual warfare with doubt and fear in your heart the enemy can sense it. I remember when I was under heavy demonic oppression and the devil was continually harassing me day and night and it wasn’t until I understood my authority in Christ that my spiritual weaponry began to work. I got to the point where I was fed up and I started to fight the devil back.

Another powerful fact about the Name of Jesus is it has authority over death. When Christ died, was buried, and rose again He took back the keys of Hades and Death. Revelation 1:18 discloses, “I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death.”

Before Jesus died on the cross at Calvary those that died and believed in God went to a place called paradise but could not yet enter into Heaven. When the Lord fulfilled all the qualifications as the perfect Sacrifice He overcame death and Hades. So what that means for believers of Christ is we know have the amazing gift of eternal life in Heaven with the Lord.

Another amazing benefit that we have because of what Jesus Christ did for us is we no longer have to accept premature death. Proverbs 10:27 states, “The fear of the Lord prolongs days, but the years of the wicked will be shortened.” If we are battling sickness and disease we have the power in the Name of Jesus Christ to call that infirmity out of our bodies. What a powerful revelation!

Conclusion

The Name of Jesus is such a powerful weapon of war that so many Christians do not take advantage of. If it is the Name above every Name that means that anything else is subjected to His Name. The devil and his demonic kingdom have no power over the Name of Jesus.

Unfortunately a lot of Christians do not get a hold of this revelation and do not walk in the authority that the Lord has given us. Instead they walk in doubt, fear, and unbelief and those are a recipe for defeat. The enemy will sense it and take full advantage of your lack of faith!
