Weapons of Warfare-Your Faith

In order to fully understand why we need weapons of warfare to begin with we need to understand that we are up against a very powerful adversary the devil. He runs a militant demonic kingdom that has a goal to kill, steal, and destroy every one of us by any means necessary, John 10:10. Whether you are a believer or a non-believer you are fighting a daily spiritual battle nobody is exempt.

The good news is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ paid our entire sin debt allowing Him to triumph over Satan and his entire demonic kingdom openly, Colossians 2:15. Consequently, born again believers of Christ have the power over the devil. Luke 10:19 details, “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”

If you are a believer of Jesus Christ, you have the power dwelling within you (the Holy Spirit, Acts 1:8) to overcome every scheme and tactic that the devil and his minions throw at you. The Lord has provided Christians with spiritual weaponry that we have the ability to utilize anytime that we want to. The unfortunate thing is a lot of believers do not know what these weapons of warfare are let alone how to use them.

We are living in a time where we cannot afford to be ignorant of the devil’s devices, Hosea 4:6. He is roaming around like a roaring lion searching for people to devour, 1 Peter 5:8. Meaning that he is actively looking for those that are not fully armored, out of tune with the Holy Spirit, don’t read their Word, don’t use the weapons that are given to them, and are lukewarm practicing willful sin.

Those are the Christians that he is going to have bound, oppressed, chained, and shackled. Do not let that be you! Gain an understanding of the weapons of warfare that have been given to us and learn how to use them. The one that I am going to cover in this article is Faith.

What exactly is Faith?

Faith is having complete assurance and confidence in the Word of God and His promises even when we cannot see them happen right away. Hebrews 11:1 says, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Another verse of Scripture that we need to look at is Romans 10:17 it says, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” The word “word” in this verse means “rhema” or the spoken word of God.

This can happen in many ways: a verse of Scripture will pop out at you; you may hear a message from a Pastor meant just for you, the Lord may give someone a word specifically for you, and many other ways that God speaks a Word explicitly for us. When you begin to see that spoken word manifest, your Faith grows tremendously!

As we add Hebrews 11:1 to it we have a better understanding of what the Lord is trying to convey pertaining to faith. He is showing us that the Word of God is the substance or currency of the things that we hope for. When you are up against heavy spiritual warfare at the hand of the enemy you need to have faith in the weapons that you are using to counterattack.

When you proclaim the Word of God by Faith God will do what He says He will do. Remember He is not a man that would lie (Numbers 23:19) He puts His Word above even His Name (Psalm 138:2). By Faith you can stand on the Scriptures and they can be used as weapons of warfare. Jesus Christ proclaimed “It is Written” against the enemy when he came against him in the wilderness, Matthew 4:4-7.

The Lord’s Word is filled with His promises but the question is; are we standing on those promises as the absolute truth? Are we speaking His Words over our family, our children, and ourselves? They have so much power! Let’s take a look some passages of Scripture where faith is seen as a weapon of warfare.

1 John 5:4

“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.”

Breaking down this powerful verse of scripture we see that the word “overcome” being used is the Greek word “nikaō” which means: used of one who by Christian constancy and courage keeps himself unharmed and spotless from his adversary’s devices, solicitations, assaults: the devil. The word faith being used here is the Greek word pístis which means the conviction of the truth.

Now when we apply what the Greek meaning of these words mean, we can conclude that the Lord is stating that the power to overcome the devil’s devices, solicitations, and assaults regardless of what it is, is based on the belief that we have in God’s Truth and Who He is. Remember it is impossible to please the Lord without having faith, Hebrews 11:6.

Another thing that I need to point out is the fact that the Lord is telling us “…whatever is born of God…” meaning born again through God’s Holy Power prompting and persuading us to put our Faith in Christ and live a NEW life consecrated to Him (2 Corinthians 5:17) are the ones that will have the power to overcome the devices of the devil used in this world.

When you put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ and what He did for you at the cross at Calvary nothing the devil or his demonic kingdom can do will hinder that level of faith. He that is in you is greater than he that is in this world, 1 John 4:4. Not to mention the fact that we have been given the free gift of the Holy Spirit Whom will guide you into absolute truth, John 16:13.

He will also bring scriptures to our remembrance when we need them the most especially when we’re being attacked by the enemy. Never forget the fact that the more Word that we have stored in our memory bank, the more artillery we have. Jesus Christ used the Word of God to counter-attack Satan every time that he came to Him tempting Him while He was in the wilderness. How much more do we need to do the same?

Let’s take a look at another passage of Scripture pertaining to faith as a spiritual weapon of warfare.

Ephesians 6:16

“Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.”

In the Apostle Paul’s time, the Roman soldier’s shield was meant to protect and cover almost the entire body against the weapons of their adversary. It was a shield so big that it was almost as big as a door. So when we analyze how significant the shield was for the Roman soldier in Paul’s day we can conclude that it was a vital piece of armor!

One of the major roles that the shield of Faith plays when it comes to a weapon of warfare is protection and security. This particular type of shield was meant to combat every arrow and fiery dart that the devil and his minions would try to throw your direction.

A very important part of this verse of Scripture is the word “all” being used. This word “all” is the Greek word pas which means: all things and everything. In other words it doesn’t matter what devices the devil is trying to use against you, in ALL circumstances the Lord is advising us to take up the shield of faith. That is what is going to get you through every difficult situation that threatens to take you out.

Remember the devil is coming to steal, kill, and destroy us by any means necessary, John 10:10. Your shield has the ability to cover your entire body, your purpose, and every one that is attached to you. Make no mistake about it, if the enemy cannot get his grasp on you, he will try to come against your family, your finances, your calling, and anything that you can use to help you progress in the kingdom of God.

Another word out of this passage of Scripture that we need to look at is the word “taking” which is the Greek word analambanō” which means: to take up a thing in order to carry or use it. God is making it known that the shield of faith is not a piece of armor that is just going to activate itself, we must take it up and use it knowing that it has the ability to cover us and everything that pertains to us.

It is a knowing that no matter what trial, tribulation, or circumstance that you are facing, you are not going though it alone. God is not in the business of leaving us hanging (Deuteronomy 31:6) but it really boils down to whether or not you have the faith to believe it.

The final words that need to be highlighted are the words “to quench” which are the Greek word sbennymi” which means: of fire or things on fire that are put out. Your shield of faith is so powerful that it has the ability to completely extinguish the fiery darts strategically aimed directly at you.

One of the devil’s greatest tactics is to attempt to diminish your faith because he knows that it will put you in a place of vulnerability. That is why trusting in God’s promises is so necessary. The Word of God tells us that we are to count it joy when we fall into trials because it is the testing of our faith which brings forth strength and patience, James 1:2-3.

One thing about your faith is that it will get tested in one way or another. Over and over again throughout the Word of God we can see people’s faith being tried and tested. It is no different today considering the fact that the Lord is the same yesterday, today, and forever, Hebrews 13:8.

Conclusion

Make no mistake about it, whether you are a believer or a non-believer you are up against a very powerful adversary that wants to complete destroy you. Luckily the Lord has given us very powerful weapons of warfare that we can take full advantage of. He is not going to leave us without the tools that we need to prevail as believers of Jesus Christ.

Unfortunately a lot of Christians do not study the Word of God for themselves, they do not apply it to their daily lives, and they don’t take the Scriptures at face value. So what that does is leaves them open and vulnerable to the devil’s devices. God is clear when He states: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…,” Hosea 4:6. Don’t let that be you!
