What is Salvation?
So what exactly does Salvation mean? Salvation takes place when you confess with your mouth that you are a sinner and are in need of a Savior. It is imperative that you not only accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior but acknowledge that His death, burial, and resurrection completely paid for your sin debt in full allowing you to have the free gift of eternal life and salvation!
If the Lord had not followed through with sacrificing His life for you and me, the result would have been everlasting separation from God. Now because of Christ we have hope that there is a life after this one for every believer, Jesus has already prepared a place for us, John 14:3. Make no mistake at all, there is only One Way to get to into heaven, One Way to have a relationship with the Heavenly Father, and One Way for salvation and that is through the Lord Jesus Christ, John 14:5-7.
A lot of people have their own interpretation of what it means to be saved. The bottom line is, you can’t just know who Jesus is, know of Jesus, or live through someone else’s relationship with Jesus. You have to have your own personal relationship with our Lord and Savior striving to obey His commandments becoming more like Him each and every day, John 14:15. This is why getting into the Word of God and prayer is so important; they are methods of communication with Christ.
It’s about inviting him into every aspect of your life and making Him the focal point in everything that you do. He will never steer you in the wrong direction, He will never leave you when the storms of life flood in, and He will give you strength when you are weak, 2 Corinthians 12:8-9. There is no love that compares to the love that the Lord has for each and every one of us, He paid the ultimate sacrifice by laying down His life for us so that we can have the chance at eternal life, John 15:13.
The best part of salvation is the fact that Jesus died for the entire human race. So, it doesn’t matter what ethnicity you are or where you come from you are able to receive the free gift of salvation from God. John 3:16 breaks it down perfectly when John writes, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” The key word in this powerful passage is the word whoever.
A lot of times we take for granted that salvation is an actual free gift that we were given. Ephesians 2:8 details, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” The sacrificial death made by our Lord paid the entire sin debt. It wiped it completely clean. He stated it was finished!
Before Jesus’ death
Before the Lord Jesus Christ died as the perfect Sacrifice for all sin, only the high priest had access to the Most Holy Place which was called the Holy of Holies. This was done once a year by the High Priest to make atonement for his sins and for the sins of others. The moment that Jesus died, the veil separating the rest of the temple and the Holy of Holies was completely torn in two, Matthew 27:50-51.
What does this mean? What the ripping of the veil meant was that Jesus’s sacrifice was received as the perfect atonement for all sin resulting in direct access to God the Father through Jesus Christ. The veil was a symbolic barrier between us and God due to the fact that our sins could not be fully removed by the animal sacrifices that were made daily and annually.
Jesus Christ gave up His life for you and me so that we can have the ability to be cleansed of all sin, live eternally in Heaven with our Heavenly Father, and have a personal relationship with God. His death allows us the freedom to not only communicate with God but to have the liberty to approach the throne boldly, Hebrews 4:16. What a tremendous Blessing that can never be taken for granted!
Can you imagine all of the things that the children of God had to go through just to ensure that they were in right standing with the Lord? Sacrifices had to be made to atone for sin being committed and there was a process that needed to done in order to ensure that the sacrifice being made was accepted by God.
It is so unfortunate that so many believers take the sacrifice that Christ made lightly. They see the grace that the Lord has given us as a license to sin but that is very far from the truth. We have to be so careful that we don’t take the Lord’s sacrifice nonchalantly because God is extremely clear in Matthew 7:23 when Jesus states, “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!”
Notice how the Lord uses the word “practice” which is the Greek word “ergazomai” which means: exercise, perform, commit. It is one thing to mess up and know you messed up and then asking for God’s forgiveness from a genuine place. It is an entirely different thing to keep sinning over and over and over again without changing and turning from your wicked ways.
When you are truly saved and have a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, you won’t want to do anything that is going to hurt Him. Psalm 97:10 is a perfect example of that love when the psalmist writes, “You who love the Lord, hate evil!” Another commandment that is giving us instructions pertaining to loving the Lord is found in John 14:15 and it states, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.”
Jesus gave up His life for us and endured an extremely painful death so that we could have a chance at eternal life with Him in Heaven. He is just asking us to do our part in making sure that we follow the guidelines and stipulations that He has in place for us to live by.
Now let’s take a look at some of the amazing benefits that the free gift of salvation has afforded us to have.
Benefits of Salvation
Jesus Christ died a brutal death on the cross at Calvary so that He could pay for our sin penalty in full. This would allow us to have a chance of eternal life with God the Father in heaven. There are so many other benefits that have been afforded to us because of what Christ did for us. Some of the most prominent ones are:
- Health
- Healing
- Deliverance
- Protection
- Provision
Good Health
When you accept the Lord Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior you will receive the free gift of the Holy Spirit Who will guide you into absolute Truth, John 16:13. He will dwell in you and your body becomes the temple where the Holy Spirit resides, 1 Corinthians 6:19. When you do something that goes against the will of God for your life then the Spirit of God will put a check in your spirit to let you know that you are veering off course.
What that does is prevent you from opening up the door to the devil and his demonic kingdom. They have the legal right to inflict diseases and sickness upon you if you are living in willful sin. Psalm 41:3 is a perfect example of the Lord wanting His children to have good health. It details, “The Lord will strengthen him on his bed of illness; You will sustain him on his sickbed.”
Healing
When it comes to having the benefit of healing as a believer of Jesus Christ one of the primary Scriptures that comes to mind is found in Isaiah 53:5. It states, “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.”
This is such a powerful passage of Scripture as the prophet Isaiah is disclosing to us that the Lord would be wounded for us meaning that the lashes and the beating that He took upon His body has provided us with the ability to be healed. Notice that the words in the passage of Scripture mentions that we ARE healed; not maybe, possibly, or perhaps but it states are healed.
We have to get to the point with the Lord where we take His Word at face value. Either we believe that it is the truth or we don’t. God is not a man that should lie (Numbers 23:19) if He said it then He is faithful to do what He says. We have to be willing to proclaim our healing paired with the Lord’s Word and by faith receive it.
Deliverance
Prior to Jesus Christ dying for us on the cross, Satan was able to use sin as a device to keep every believer and nonbeliever bound and chained by the effects of their sin. Our biological sinful nature along with the devil using sin as his weaponry against us made it impossible to overcome the strongholds that sin created.
When Jesus died for us, He afforded us the power and authority to conquer our sins and the powers of darkness triumphing over the devil’s attempts at keeping us enslaved, Luke 10:19. Jesus becoming the perfect Sacrifice paying for every sin that we had ever committed wiped our slate clean so to speak, Colossians 2:14. This was a devastating blow to Satan’s kingdom because what this did was disarm principalities and powers that were once trampling over us using sin as their definitive weapon.
The enemy has been defeated so for those that are saved by believing in Christ and what He did for us at the cross at Calvary have authority over the devil and his kingdom. The Lord is very clear when he stated in Luke 10:19 “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” The Lord gave us authority over ALL the power of the devil and not just some!
Now we can live a life of total freedom from all of the devastating ways that the devil loves to keep us bound, Romans 8:2.
For instance:
- Anxiety
- Fear
- Depression
- Hate
- Rage
- Envy
- Jealousy
- Anger
- Alcoholism
- Drug Addiction
These are only a few of the challenges that every person faces because of our sin nature in addition to the evil strategies that the enemy uses against us. The Word of God tells us not to be oblivious as to how the devil likes to sneak his way into our lives, 2 Corinthians 2:11. We are to remain vigilant (1 Peter 5:8), meaning that we want to make sure that we are watchful of the traps that the devil secretly places in attempts to distract you or stop you from walking in your Purpose.
Protection
The moment that you made the decision to be saved: believing that you are a sinner in need of a Savior and that Jesus Christ died for you and saved you; you are now under His protective shield. You no longer have to fight alone but Jesus vows to never leave you nor forsake you, Deuteronomy 31:6. No weapon that is formed against you shall prevail (Isaiah 54:17); you are the head and not the tail (Deuteronomy 28:13).
However there are some stipulations to ensuring that you are under God’s protective covering. Psalm 91 is one of the most powerful Psalms in the entire Word of God but it begins with a very informational revelation. The writer states “He who dwells in the secret place of the almighty” meaning those that are striving for intimacy with the Lord are the ones that will see the promises found in Psalm 91 activated in their lives.
He also attaches word like “servants of the Lord” and “if you take heed to My commandments” in other words, those that are living upright in the eyes of the Lord by abiding by His rules and regulations found in His Word are the ones that are ensured His promises. Always read the Lord’s Word completely and in its proper context so that you know exactly what God is saying to you regarding His protection!
Provision
Another benefit of salvation is provision. The Scriptures are filled with promises promising His provision but they are also attached to stipulations that need to be paid close attention to. For instance Psalm 34:10 states, “The young lions lack and suffer hunger; but those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing.” Another example is found in Matthew 6:33 “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
Both of these powerful passages of Scripture reveal to us God’s amazing provision. However, they also disclose to us stipulations needing to be fulfilled in order for these promises to be activated. Both of those stipulations have to do with seeking the kingdom of God or seeking the Lord first then all His provisions will be given to us. We need to make sure that we take into account what the Lord is informing us in His Word so that we can successfully apply the Scriptures to our lives.
Some of the other amazing benefits that salvation provides believers of Jesus Christ are:
- We are no longer on our way to Hell
- We are no longer slaves to sin
- We have the gift of the Holy Spirit living in us
- We have the blessing of eternal life
- We now have the ability to be reconnected to our Heavenly Father through Christ
- We have the ability to draw strength from the Lord in times of need
With all of the benefits that we receive because of what Christ did for us on the cross why would we ever go back to the sin filled life that we were delivered from? A passage of Scripture that depicts what this would look like is found in Proverbs 26:11 and it states, “As a dog returns to his own vomit, so a fool repeats his folly.”
The Holy Spirit is making a comparison through this verse of scripture. He is equating a person that wants to go back to their old sin to a dog that wants to go back to its own vomit. The Lord makes it even clearer when He states that a fool returns to his own folly or “ridiculous idea.” Once you receive the free gift of salvation and become a Christian and experience the love, freedom, joy, life, and life in abundance that the Lord gives you; you’ll never want to go back to the life that you had before Christ!
Conclusion
The death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ has afforded born again believers so many amazing benefits. Some of the main ones are: health, healing, deliverance, protection, and deliverance. The fact of the matter is that once you receive the free gift of Salvation you are no longer fighting your battles on your own.
God promises us that He will never leave us especially in our time of need. To know that you have the benefit of eternal life with our Lord in heaven is something that cannot be explained. Don’t wait until tomorrow to give your life to Christ, God is clear when He states, “today is the day of salvation, 2 Corinthians 6:2.
