Salvation Scriptures-Salvation is a Gift

Salvation takes place when you confess with your mouth that you are a sinner and are in need of a Savior. It is imperative that you not only accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior but acknowledge that His death, burial, and resurrection completely paid for your sin debt in full allowing you to have the free gift of eternal life and salvation! This was a debt that could only be paid through the blood of a perfect sacrifice blemish free and One that was born with a sinless life.

That Sacrifice was made by God’s One and only Son Jesus Christ when the blood of Christ was shed on the cross at Calvary. God’s grace and mercy for His children afforded us to have a second chance at everlasting life with Him in heaven. Jesus came down from His throne and became fully man still fully God and operating through the power of the Holy Spirit.

It is because of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection atoning for our entire sin debt that has given us the opportunity to wash our sins away and reconciling us back to our Heavenly Father. This great love that our Lord and Savior displayed for us is indescribable and incomparable! The will of God for us is that none should perish but that we all would have eternal life, 2 Peter 3:9.

Let’s take a look at some New Testament passages of Scripture that gives us a greater perspective of salvation.

Ephesians 2:8-9

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

When we break down these passages of Scripture we can see some really great information given to us by the Apostle Paul. The words “by grace” being used here is the Greek word charis which means: of the merciful kindness by which God, exerting his holy influence upon souls, turns them to Christ, keeps, strengthens, increases them in Christian faith, knowledge, affection, and kindles them to the exercise of the Christian virtues.

The word “faith” being used is the Greek word pistis which means: faith in God of which Jesus Christ is the author, belief with the predominate idea of trust (or confidence) whether in God or in Christ, springing from faith in the same. When we analyze this first part of the Scripture we can conclude that Paul is letting us know that salvation is an extreme act of kindness, unmerited favor, and God’s gift to all of those who choose to believe.

It is having faith in Jesus Christ and what He did on the cross of Calvary and knowing that you are a sinner in need of a Savior. There is no way that any one of us could have paid the penalty for sin within our own doing; God required a perfect sacrifice which could only have been done through Jesus Christ and Him alone.

Let’s continue breaking down the key words in these powerful passages of Scripture. The word “gift” being used is the Greek word dōron which means: a present. The word “works” being used is the Greek word ergon which means: an act, deed, or thing being done. The words “should boast” being used is the Greek word kauchaomai which means: to glory in a thing.

So when we analyze these important words we can conclude that the Lord is making it clear that salvation is God’s gift to all of humanity and it is only by the grace of God that we are able to obtain salvation to begin with. It is most definitely not something that we can receive because of good works or good things that we have done in our lives.

That is a part that I want to make sure is crystal clear. A lot of people will say they are going to heaven and have received the gift of eternal life because they are “a good person.” That is very far from being true. God’s Word is definitive that Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation and there is NO other way, Acts 4:12, John 3:16, John 14:6.

The Lord will not share His glory with anybody else (Isaiah 42:8) and that is why it is clear that good deeds and our own works cannot get us into heaven. God knows how our minds can be if we think that we got ourselves into the state of salvation by something that we did, we would attempt to glory in it. That is why He lets it be known that nobody can boast or steal the glory that belongs to Him and Him alone!
