Salvation Scriptures-God’s Mercy Saved Us

Salvation is a free gift from the Lord that could never be earned. The love of God is so absolute that He sent His only Son to die on the cross for our sins. It is because of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection atoning for our entire sin debt that has given us the opportunity to wash our sins away and reconciling us back to our Heavenly Father.

Salvation begins when you confess with your mouth that you are in need of a Savior and believe in your heart that Jesus Christ is that perfect Sacrifice. It is not enough to just say it but you must also believe it in your heart. It has to be personal to you or you will struggle with the fact that your good deeds, good works, or the righteous things that you have done cannot ensure your entry into the Kingdom of God.

God’s Word is very clear when Jesus Christ states in John 14:6 “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Jesus Christ paid for the entire sin debt for all of humanity and it is only through Him that we can have eternal life. When you become a born again Christian you are no longer living for yourself but you are living for Him.

We have to understand that the great love that our Lord and Savior displayed for us is indescribable and incomparable! God’s great mercy and grace put His one and only Son up on the cross to die for our “just in case.” This showcase of love is a true testament that the will of God for us is that none should perish but that we all would have the hope of eternal life, 2 Peter 3:9.

Let’s take a look at a very powerful passage of Scripture that reveals this very truth!

Titus 3:5

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.”

Breaking down this very informative verse of Scripture we see that the word “works” being used is the Greek word “ergon” which means: the works required and approved by God. The word “righteousness” being used here is the Greek word dikaiosynē which means: walking in the righteousness in which God demands, walking in the way equivalent to an upright and righteous man (woman).

The word “mercy” being used here is the Greek word eleos which means: that of God towards sinners, the mercy of God. The word “saved” being used here is the Greek word sōzō which means: to make one a partaker of the salvation through Christ. In other words it is the fact that it is only through the Son of God that one can receive eternal salvation.

When we dissect this first part of this powerful passage of Scripture we can conclude that Paul’s letter to Titus is disclosing some vital information. He is stating that there is no amount of work that we do, or good things that we have achieved, or righteous deeds that we do that will get us saved.

Our own mercy is not what is going to achieve salvation. It is through God’s favor towards all of us even though we are sinners He still allowed a way for us to obtain salvation. That way is through Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ alone, there is no other route. The kindness of God, the grace of God, and the love of God is displayed when He gave His only Son as the perfect sacrifice for our sins.

When you read the Holy Bible for yourself you can see this fact being played out both in the Old Testament and the New Testament. We could not atone for our own sins but blood had to be shed by an unblemished animal (Old Testament Leviticus 16:29-34) and the unblemished Lamb of God or Christ (New Testament Matthew 26:26-28).

The only difference between the Old and New Covenant is that the death of Jesus Christ on the cross at Calvary paid for our sin debt in full. We need to place our faith in Christ and what He did and know that our sins have been forgiven past, present, and future. That doesn’t mean that we have grace to practice sin, God forbid, Romans 6:1-2. That is a very dangerous place to put yourself in, Matthew 7:23.

Now let’s take a closer look at the last part of this important Scripture found in the book of Titus. The words “of washing” being used is the Greek word loutron which means: the act of bathing, baptism. The words “of regeneration” being used is the Greek word palingenesia which means: spiritual renovation, new birth, reproduction, renewal, and recreation. The word “renewing” being used is the Greek word anakainōsis which means: renewal, renovation, and complete change for the better.

There is so much great information that we can unpack from this last part of this Scripture. What the Apostle Paul is disclosing to us through the leading of the Holy Spirit is that our Christian life is an ongoing process. Salvation is just the first step and then there is action that needs to be made on our part to ensure that we are representing the image of Christ the way that we should.

The Holy Spirit plays a vital role in this process as we can see that He will help you with the renewing of your mind, completely renovating the way that we used to be, and transforming us more and more like Christ every single day. It has to do with a complete change for the better through the power of the Holy Spirit.

God’s Word is definitive in 2 Corinthians 5:17 and it states, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” The moment that you become a born again believer and receive the free gift of the Holy Spirit living inside you, you should yearn for change.

You have now become a new man or woman unrecognizable to the people around you. God’s Spirit will convict you when you need to be convicted urging you to live upright in the eyes of God. It has to do with the removal of dirt and grime and all of the sin that you used to live in to the renewal of your mind focusing on perfecting the new life that you have in Christ.

You should see yourself turning from your wicked ways where it is no longer you but Christ living in you that people around you should be able to see! That is how you will know that there has been a renovation in spirit, mind, and body that has taken place! The Lord takes this process very seriously and will have nothing to do with sin considering the fact that His Only Son Whom knew no sin became sin for us, 2 Corinthians 5:21!
