The Lord’s Model Prayer

What is Prayer?
Prayer is communication with our Heavenly Father. Just like you would communicate with the people that you love in your life, the Lord desires the same communication with His children. He wants to have a relationship with us that consist of more than just spending time with Him on a Sunday afternoon. We have to get to a place in our lives where we understand and realize the importance and the power of prayer.
Ask yourself this question: what would happen if I didn’t talk with my spouse on a daily basis? The end result would be: a distant relationship, no intimacy, no connection, and no familiarity to them. There is no way that a relationship like that would ever last. It is the same kind of scenario with the Lord, if you put Him on the back burner and speak to Him one day a week you will be completely disconnected to God’s voice. You have to be willing to have dedicated prayer time devoted just for Him!
God’s Word is very specific in John 10:27-28 when it states, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.” These two verses of Scripture are very telling. The Lord is declaring the fact that His sheep will know His voice.
Why is that important? The reason hearing God’s voice is so significant is because that is how we are able to: understand God’s character, get God’s direction, get God’s help, be in the midst of God’s presence, and know God’s will for our lives. If you are struggling with your prayer life, ask the Holy Spirit to help you in this area. Not having a strong relationship with the Lord is something that you just cannot afford.
When we include prayer into our daily routines, we are inviting the Lord to help us do what we know we cannot do in our own power. We are fighting against an adversary that is consistently attempting to snatch every blessing and create strongholds. The power of the Holy Spirit that dwells on the inside of every believer has the ability to guide, help, and lead you to living a victorious life, John 16:13.
Why is Prayer so Important?
Most people believe that prayer doesn’t do any good and believe that everything that happens in our lives is according to God’s will. That is very far from the truth and because we live in a fallen world sin plays a huge part in the things that happen on Earth. God is Sovereign meaning He owns everything around you, He has absolute Authority, and He is the Master of everything. However, the Lord has given every human being the ability to have a free will and that free will affects every aspect of a person’s life.
Proverbs 19:3 details “The foolish acts of man make his way bad, and his heart is angry toward the Lord.” In other words when a person acts like a fool making bad decisions and faces the repercussions of those decisions they often blame the Lord. Every choice that someone makes will have an outcome and that outcome can be a good one or a bad one based on that choice.
Another aspect that we need to take into consideration regarding prayer is the fact that the Lord has given us dominion over then Earth. Genesis 1:28 is very specific as it states, “Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
The fact that the Lord gave us dominion over the earth to master and subdue it meant that our free will affects God’s intervention in our lives. What that means is in order for the Lord to implement His will on the Earth without taking away our free will is through our prayers. Our prayers give the Lord the go ahead to legally impose His will into our circumstance.
The same thing is true with the demonic kingdom. Satan cannot just come into your life and wreak havoc; you have to give him the legal access through open doors like sin which permits him to create chaos. God is just and He will not go against His Word and in fact He even places the Scriptures above His own Name, Psalm 138:2.
If God violates the authority that He has given to us found in Genesis 1:28 then He would be going against His Word which He will not do. So the way that the Lord works through born again believers of Jesus Christ on Earth is through the process of prayer. Let’s take a look at a perfect example of how the Lord works through prayer.
2 Chronicles 7:14 states, “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” Notice how there is an “if” that starts this passage of Scripture meaning that there is a stipulation attached to it. We have to make the choice to pray and turn away from wickedness in order for the Lord to heal our land.
Through this series I will break down the Lord’s Prayer and why the Lord is giving us an outline of how we are supposed to pray. He isn’t giving us this prayer to use it repetitiously but to use as a guideline to pray powerfully. Down below is the entire prayer that we will go over found in the book of Matthew.
Matthew 6:9-13
“In this manner, therefore, pray:
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
10 Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”
Conclusion
There is no doubting the significance of prayer; it is literally the power that you need to preserve you as a believer of Jesus Christ. It allows the Lord to show up in any situation that you are facing and completely turn it around.
One of the main things that you want to remember is that God looks at your heart. So, when you come to Him in prayer lead with your heart. He wants nothing more than to spend intimate time with every single one of us. Unfortunately, the only time that most of us give Him is one Sunday a week and then He doesn’t hear from us until the following Sunday.
We have to make sure that we make intentional efforts to put time aside every day to spend with the Lord. It will be the most valuable time that you will ever spend on anything. The amount of prayer time that you devote to God will reflect in every other aspect of your life, undeniably!
