The Lord’s Model Prayer-Your Daily Bread

One of the best ways that we can communicate with our heavenly Father is through prayer. He wants to hear from us daily and not just for a moment on a Sunday afternoon church service. Just like you would speak to your spouse, children, or those that are in your inner circle you want to talk to the Lord in the same way.

He is a loving Father and desires to have an intimate relationship with every one of His children. Make it a point to set aside alone time daily with God just to communicate and touch basis with Him. Jesus Christ knew how significant prayer was and in fact provided us with an outline of how we should pray.

The Lord’s Model prayer is found in Matthew 6:9-13, I have posted it down below.

Matthew 6:9-13

“In this manner, therefore, pray:

Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
10 Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”

When we take a look at these passages of Scripture we can determine that what Jesus was giving us is a framework on how we should pray. In Matthew 6:9, “In this manner…” which is the Greek word houtō(s) which means: in the way in which it should be done. There is so much depth in the Lord’s Model Prayer and it is important that we gain a clear understanding of key elements within it.

One of the greatest misconceptions is that we don’t really need to pray because God’s will on Earth will be done regardless. That is very far from the truth in fact the Lord has given every one of us free will. He created us to have the ability to make choices on our own without being forced into anything.

That is why prayer is vital because what it does is invites the Lord to implement His will without violating our own free will. God will never go against His Word and in fact places it above His own Name, Psalm 138:2. So when He gave us dominion over the Earth, that is exactly what He meant.

Prayer not only allows you to connect with your Heavenly Father but it gives you the opportunity to get in tune with His voice. It allows you to be led by Him as John 10:27-28 details, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I will give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.”

Allowing the Holy Spirit to lead you prevents you from being surprised by the enemy’s attacks. John 16:13 reveals, “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.”

Another important passage of Scripture is found in John 14:26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.” Here we can see that being led by the Spirit of God will reveal things that are to come so that we don’t get caught off guard, it will guide us into absolute Truth, teach us all things, and bring Scriptures to our remembrance when we need them the most!

Now that we have an understanding of the importance of prayer let’s take a look at the third part of the Lord’s Model Prayer found in the book of Matthew

Matthew 6:11

“Give us this day our daily bread.”

Jesus specifically put “daily bread” in the Lord’s Model prayer because He wanted us to learn how to depend on the Lord daily. A lot of times we tend to speak to the Lord in prayer only in times of desperation. The Lord desires to hear from us every single day. Thank Him for the little things that you have starting with breath in your body, food on the table, and a roof over your head.

We tend to overlook just how blessed we truly are compared to other people in the world. The fact of the matter is no matter how bad you think that you have it, there is someone out there wishing they could trade spots with you. We don’t ever want to feel entitled but instead come to the Lord with a humble and grateful heart.

One thing that we want to keep in mind is that “daily bread” signifies necessities. It is more of our needs and not our wants. James 4:3 discloses, “You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.” In other words the Lord knows if what you are asking Him for is because of your vain desires. He knows if it what you are asking Him for will progress or hinder you. Just like your Earthly father says no because it will cause more harm than good, your Heavenly Father will do the same.

We see the example of what the Lord means by daily bread found in the same chapter out of the book of Matthew. Matthew 6:30-32 details, “Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.”

The key words out of all this text are the words “that you need” which is the Greek word chrēzō which means: to have need of or to be in want of. The Lord provides for His children and wants us to have a life and a life of abundance, John 10:10. However, He knows our hearts and so He will know if the things that we are asking Him for are for worldly pleasure or if we are asking with the right intentions.

Proverbs 10:22 is a powerful passage of Scripture that lets us know whether the blessings that we are receiving are truly from the Lord. It states, “The blessing of the Lord makes one rich, and He adds no sorrow with it.” The word “sorrow” being used is the Hebrew word ʿēṣeḇwhich means: pain, hurt, toil, labor, and hardship. What Solomon is letting us know is when the Lord blesses us with something there will be no hardship attached to it.

God wants to give us a life and a life in abundance but we can never forget to thank Him for even the smallest gifts that He provides us with. Psalm 100:4 is definitive when it states, “Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.” You never want to get to a place in your life where you forget to thank your Heavenly Father for everything small or big.

The fact that you woke up to see another day, have breath in your body, your family is safe, you have peace in your mind, you have food on the table, and a roof over your head are blessings within themselves. There are people out there that didn’t wake up today and we never ever want to take our lives for granted!

Conclusion:

The Lord’s Model Prayer was given to us by Jesus Christ to teach us how to pray. There are key elements within the prayer that we need to dissect and understand. The fact of the matter is that the Lord didn’t say that prayer was an option but stated “when” we pray meaning that it is expected.

The third part of the Prayer given to us has to do with asking God for our daily bread. We should rely on the Lord for every single thing that we need in our lives and He desires for us to communicate our needs to Him daily. When we come to the Lord in prayer asking for guidance, provision, and preservation we are showing Him that we trust and need His input in all circumstances!
