Isaiah 96

Isaiah 9:6

“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

The prophet Isaiah was one of the most influential prophets mentioned in the entire Word of God. He is considered to be a major prophet because of the length of his book which bears his name. He was the son of Amoz and his name means “God is salvation or the Lord saves.”

Isaiah was used mightily by God to prophesy of the life, death, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. This particular verse of Scripture out of the Old Testament is the prophet Isaiah giving a prophecy of a future Child that would be born. This Child was not just any Child but He was the Son of the almighty God. Then Isaiah goes on to describe some of the amazing Names that the Lord Jesus Christ would be called.

This passage out of the book of Isaiah is one of the most powerful verses in the entirety of the Word of God. It gave the nation of Israel hope of a coming Savior, the eternal Son of God who would carry the entire government on His shoulders. The prophet through the leading of the Holy Spirit also reiterates that fact that the Lord would be born as a child just like every other human being.

That aspect of Jesus allowed Israel to relate to Him on a more personal level. He is still the true God Whom wrapped Himself up in flesh so that He could live among us. He wanted to experience every emotion, every temptation, and every tribulation that humanity had to face. He wanted us to have a chance at eternal life with Him and He knew that this was the only way that we could. He didn’t have to but He did because He loves us that much!

God’s love is absolute and there is no greater love, He radiates it. A lot of people want to know what God is like, but all you have to do is look at His Son Jesus. The Word of God tells us in John 14:9 “Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?” Every characteristic and personality trait that Jesus displays is the same individualities that God exhibits.

Now let’s break down some of the Names that the prophet Isaiah lists in this amazing prophecy.

Wonderful

Isaiah mentions the word Wonderful when referencing the Lord. The Hebrew word for “Wonderful” is pele’ which means: wonder, extraordinary, hard to understand thing, Wonderful Counsellor (in reference to a Messianic King). So in other words our Lord of Lords and our High Priest is so extraordinary that He cannot be put into words.

He is not just the Son of the living God, but He is the second Person of the Trinity equal to God. He is seated at the right hand of Father interceding on our behalf day and night. His steadfast love is without measure and if you have ever had a true encounter with Jesus you understand the amazing kind of love that He radiates!

Counsellor

Another Name that is used in reference to Jesus is the name “Counsellor” which is the Hebrew word yāʿaṣ which means: to advise, counsel, give counsel, or consult. We can conclude that the Lord is the One that will give us direction when we begin to veer off track. One thing that we can never forget is that our eternal Father is faithful, never leaving us nor forsaking us, Deuteronomy 31:6.

That is why He gave us the free gift of the Holy Spirit Who will lead us and guide us into all truth. We can see in God’s Word where the Spirit of God aids Jesus in counseling His children. Isaiah 11:2 describes, “The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.”

When you don’t know which direction to go in life, call on the Name of the Lord and He will direct your path. He is the One and only true God that knows the beginning from the end. Is there anyone better or greater to get counsel from when it comes to your life than the One that created it?

Mighty God

There are a lot of modern Christians today that do not believe that Jesus is equal to God. Here is a verse of Scripture that clarifies the fact that He is. The Name “Mighty God” is the Hebrew words gibôr which means: attribute of God especially as fighting for His people and ‘ēl which means: God, Mighty One, Mighty Hero reflecting the divine majesty.

One thing that we want to make sure that we understand is that Jesus is the Mighty One with divine magnificence. When He became a human through the virgin conception through Mary, that did not negate the fact that He was fully God and fully Man. He chose to come in the form of a servant, humble, meek, and obedient unto death, Philippians 2:7.

We cannot forget that He is the King of Kings, a mighty strong God that is going to come back one day as the Lion of the tribe of Judah, Revelation 5:5. His eyes are like flames of fire (Revelation 19:12), He will smite the nations (Revelation 19:15), and He has the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God (Revelation 19:15).

Everlasting Father

Another Name that the prophet Isaiah uses to describe our Lord and Savior is “Everlasting Father” which are the Hebrew words ʿaḏ which means: ancient (of past time) and for ever (of future time) and ‘āḇ which means: of God as Father of His people. When we break down the significance of what Everlasting Father means we can conclude that He is the beginning and the end, the alpha and the omega, He is the ancient of past time meaning that He is and always was.

John 1:1-2 gives us the perfect description of Jesus Christ being God before the foundation of the World. John states, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.” There is no mistaking the fact that Jesus was the Father of eternity from the start.

His eternal role is made known in another verse of Scripture out of the New Testament. John 8:58 is very clear “Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.” When we look at this passage out of the Bible we can conclude that Jesus is letting us know that He was there and always had been there even before creation. When we can view Christ through an eternal lens we can stand on His promise that He will never leave us nor forsake us, Deuteronomy 31:6. He has and always will be there!

Prince of Peace

The final Name that Isaiah mentions in this prophecy is the Name Prince of Peace. The words “the Prince” is the Hebrew word śar which means: prince, ruler, leader, chief, chieftain, captain, general, and commander. The words “of peace” is the Hebrew word šālôm which means: completeness, safety, soundness (in body), welfare, and peace.

So the point that Isaiah is trying to make about Jesus Christ is that He is our Great King, Ruler, and Commander with the ability to lead with authority. He is also the One that you can rest in and find your absolute peace in your time of need. He is the calm in the middle of your storm. When you can trust in the mighty God that you serve and stand firm on His promises, you won’t have to worry about what is going to happen tomorrow because you know that He is already there.

Another verse of Scripture that illustrates the peace that Jesus Christ gives you is found in Philippians 4:7. The Apostle Paul states, “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Jesus Christ is the Word of God made flesh so when you saturate your heart and mind in the Lord’s Word, it will give you a peace that is beyond comprehension.

The key to a renewed and peaceful frame of mind is to get into the Lord’s Word: study it, digest it, and apply it to your daily life. That way when the enemy comes to try to sow seeds of doubt, you have your artillery ready to combat his lies with!

This main verse of Scripture out of the book of Isaiah (Isaiah 9:6) that I am highlighting is one of the most significant verses out of the Bible. Isaiah is prophesying about the Child that would come to into the World that would be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. When you have a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ you will come to find that the Names that Isaiah is describing are just some of the incredible words that illustrate how amazing Jesus Christ really is!
