Know Who You are in Christ-Power over Word Curses

As Christians it is so vital that we know exactly who we are in Jesus Christ and the power that we carry in His Name. God is very clear when He lets us know that we have the authority to overcome every scheme that the devil will try to entangle us in, Luke 10:19. Weapons being formed against us are one of the things that we have the ability to sever in Jesus’ Name.

What does that actually mean? Often times you will hear a pastor preach “No weapon formed against you will prosper” but most of the time we are not given any explanation as to what that really means. I remember hearing this said over and over again in church but never truly understanding what the Lord meant by this Biblical fact. What weapons and where did they come from? The weapons being mentioned are coming straight from our enemy!

One thing that we want to fully comprehend is the fact that we are up against a powerful adversary that wants nothing more than to steal, kill, and destroy every single one of us, John 10:10. He will do anything in his power to ensure our demise and that includes forming spiritual weapons against us. The one that I want to highlight is the weapons being sent to us in the form of word curses.

I just finished my article on the power of your words it’s called: Know Who You Are in Christ-There is Power in Your Words. If you have a chance please take a moment to read it to fully understand how your words can impact you and your family’s lives.

We can never underestimate the power of words especially those being said against you. If your pay close attention to those around you, you can actually hear word curses being said all day long.

For example:

“I am so stupid, why did I do that!”

“I am never going to get ahead in life!”

“You’re so lazy!”

“You’re so fat!”

“Why did I ever marry you, you’re worthless!”

The ones that truly break my heart and upset me to my core are the word curses that I hear being said over children by an adult and often times their own parents.

For example:

“You are never going to amount to anything!”

“You are such a bad child, what am I going to do with you?!”

“You are going to turn out just like your mother/father!”

These are just a few examples but as you can imagine people say much worse. The unfortunate thing that people do not realize is that death and life is literally in the power of your tongue, Proverbs 18:21. So the things that you speak over your children will bring forth life or death, blessings or curses. This spiritual law is very real and needs to be taken seriously.

The fortunate thing is that a part of our inheritance that we inherited as believers of Jesus Christ is the power to condemn every evil word spoken against us through the Name of Jesus. The thing is a lot of Christians do not take the time to study the Word of God and so they don’t even know the promises that have been afforded to us because of what Jesus Christ did on the cross at Calvary.

So, what ends up happening is the enemy uses the people around them to speak word curses over their lives and they just allow it to happen. This is one of the most used devices that the enemy uses over and over again against believers because of lack of knowledge (Hosea 4:6) and being ignorant to the devil’s devices (2 Corinthians 2:11).

Often times we have nothing but chaos and misfortune happening in our lives and we cannot understand why. Meanwhile all of the words that are coming out of your mouth are negative, destructive, and harmful. God is very clear on His Biblical law that your words have consequences and it is our responsibility as His children to know how to protect ourselves against the devil and one of his most used weapons.

Let’s take a look at the verse of Scripture that breaks down exactly what I mean.

Isaiah 54:17

“No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is from Me,” says the Lord.”

This powerful passage of Scripture was written by the prophet Isaiah, one of the most influential prophets in the entire Word of God. He is explaining to us that we can expect weapons against us to form but they shall not prosper or develop. We have the authority as Christians through the Name of Jesus to extinguish the fiery arrows the enemy throws our direction.

The fact is that you will get attacked by Satan and his demonic kingdom. It is not a matter of if but when. The moment that you became a true believer of Jesus Christ is the exact moment that you became a threat to the devil and his kingdom. It is not called spiritual warfare for no reason. We are up against a very powerful adversary that comes against the Kingdom of our God every chance that he gets.

However God promises us that those weapons will not prosper but we have to make sure that we are doing what we are supposed to be doing on our end to prevent them from succeeding. The Lord gives us all of the tools that we need to live a victorious life in Christ but it is our responsibility to read His Word so that we can know what those weapons are.

Now, let’s dive a little deeper into the primary Scripture that I am highlighting Isaiah 54:17. The word “weapon” being used is the Hebrew word kᵊlî which means: utensil, implement, apparatus, and vessel used for hunting or war. In other words God is saying to you that every weapon that the devil tries to use against you to hunt you down to destroy you, God says it will not prosper!

Another important aspect of this particular verse of Scripture is the words “shall prosper” which is the Hebrew word ṣālēaḥ which means: to advance or to prosper. The Lord is making it clear to us that the weapons that the enemy throws our way may form but will not advance. The Scripture that gives us more clarity on this is found in Isaiah 59:19 and it states, “…When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him.”

He that is in you will always be greater than he that is in the world, 1 John 4:4. When you put your faith in the Lord and stand firm on His Word, the enemy’s tactics will not succeed. This includes the word curses that are being said over you and your loved ones. What does the Lord tell us about preventing that weapon from forming?

The Lord tells us exactly what we are to do when those negative words are said by people that are trying to cause us harm. He tells us to condemn (denounce) the words made in judgment over us. Part of our inheritance as believers of Jesus Christ is the authority over negative and judgmental declarations being spoken against you.

We can see the Lord exposing this very thing in Isaiah 54:17 when the Prophet Isaiah states, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord…” The word “tongue” being used here is the Hebrew word lāšôn which means: organ of speech that can be either good or bad.

So in other words God is saying that every destructive word said over you or your family, you have the power through Christ to sever it at its root, denounce it, and detach yourself and your family from it. This is a powerful tool given to us by the Lord to use against our enemy. We can never forget the fact that we are in a daily spiritual battle and the devil will try any tactic to ensure our demise.

We have to have an understanding of how he operates so that we can protect ourselves and our families from his schemes. One of the most powerful verses of Scripture is Isaiah 54:17 because it discloses to us how we can extinguish one of the most used weapons used by the enemy and that is having others around you speak death, destruction, and chaos over you with no pushback!

Conclusion

There is a daily battle going on between the Kingdom of Light and the kingdom of darkness for your soul. The Lord’s plan for you is to have a life of abundance, but the devil’s plan for your life is to steal, kill, and destroy it by any means necessary, John 10:10. We can’t be ignorant of his devices and one of the main ones that he uses over and over again against us is word curses. God gave us a solution and that is to condemn every judgmental word said against you and your family.

It is our responsibility to know this Biblical principle and apply it to our circumstances. Use the Word of God against the devil’s lies. Isaiah 54:17 is definitely one of those passages of Scripture that you need to decree over yourself, your spouse, children, and family. You don’t know what words people behind closed doors are speaking against you but God does. As long as you are standing firm on His Words, every demon from hell has to obey!
