Know Your Enemy-an angel of light

One of the greatest lies that the enemy uses against believers and non-believers alike is making us think that he does not exist. If you don’t know that you are fighting a real and powerful adversary then you’ve already lost the battle. He will use demonic powers and satanic deceptions to keep you deceived in the hopes that you will not discover the True Gospel of God for yourself.

Remember that your fight is not against flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:12) but it is against a highly structured militant kingdom that is focused on killing, stealing, and destroying you completely, John 10:10. God’s Word gives us so many verses of Scripture that expose our true enemy both in the Old Testament and the New Testament:

Old Testament:

Zechariah 3:1 “Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to oppose him.”

Genesis 3:1 “Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

Job 1:7 “And the Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?” So Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and from on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.”

New Testament:

1 Peter 5:8 “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”

1 John 3:8 “He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.”

John 8:44 “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.”

John 10:10 “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”

These are just some of the examples out of the Word of God that give us an idea of the adversary that we face on a daily basis. Before I got saved I would hear the word “devil” and not truly believe that he really existed. A lot of believers think that he is just a myth that is passed down from generation to generation and so they don’t take spiritual warfare seriously.

I was one of those people that did not take the spiritual realm, Satan, or his kingdom seriously. It wasn’t until I had to face the devil’s demonic realm firsthand. I was so oppressed mentally, spiritually, physically, and emotionally that I thought that I wasn’t going to make it through. It is so vital that we are not ignorant of the devil’s devices, 2 Corinthians 2:11. He will chew you up and spit you out if you let him!

One thing that I have come to realize is the fact that one of the devil’s main goals is to keep you blinded to the Truth of Christ by using false teachers, false apostles, and false prophets to preach a different gospel. It is imperative that you get into your Holy Bible and study it for yourself so that you can have a clear understanding of how your enemy operates and how to fight against his devices.

One of the devil’s most used strategies against believers and non-believers is portraying himself as an angel of light. I am going to break down some passages of Scripture that disclose to us exactly how he does it.

2 Corinthians 11:13-15

“For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.”

There is a lot to unpack in these passages of Scripture. One of the main things that I want to highlight is the fact that the devil uses false apostles (one who falsely claims to be an ambassador of Christ) and deceitful workers to do his work for him primarily in the church. What they do is transform themselves into apostles of Christ deceiving Christians into following a different doctrine.

That is why it is crucial that you have a relationship with the Holy Spirit paired with the knowledge of the Word of God. He is the One that will guide you into all truth, John 16:13 and will bring Scriptures to your remembrance when you need them, John 14:26. He will put a check in your spirit if you are in a church that is preaching false doctrine or if the person that you are listening to is false.

We are living in a time where the devil is doing everything that he can to deceive even the elect. Matthew 24:24 details, “For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.” There is a rise of false prophets using signs and wonders professing that they are operating under the power of the Holy Spirit when in actuality they are operating under the power of Satan and his kingdom.

One clear indication if a preacher, teacher, prophet, brother, or sister claiming to be of Christ is deceitful is if they are not pointing everything to Jesus Christ. For instance they are using a point of contact that “supposedly” you need for healing or deliverance like: honey, specific food that you need to eat, herbs, salt in the corner of your house, taking a bath a certain way, etc.

Another example that will let you know that you are dealing with a false person preaching doctrines of demons is that they will ask for enormous amounts of money every time that they “prophesy” or “preach” and they will tie your freedom, deliverance, and healing to a dollar amount.

Jesus was very clear in Matthew 10:8 when He stated, “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.” Unfortunately a lot of born again believers are getting taken advantage of because of their desperation of getting set free. These workers of iniquities being used by the devil are preying on innocent and vulnerable people.

I cannot express to you how important it is to read your Word because everything that you need to avoid being deceived is found in your Bible. God tells us in Hosea 4:6 “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; Because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.”

Another way that the devil and his demons come to you as an angel of light is through familiar spirits. I am going to list the passage of Scripture that gives us an idea of the dangers of interacting with “familiar spirits.”

Isaiah 8:19

“And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?”

Here we can see that the prophet Isaiah through the leading of the Holy Spirit is strongly advising us to refrain from speaking to “familiar spirits.” The words “them that have familiar spirits” being used here is the Hebrew word “‘ôḇ” which means: necromancer, one who evokes the dead. The reason why this is so dangerous is because of the fact that “familiar spirits” that people talk to are actually demons. Coming to agreement with them gives them the legal right to keep you bound.

God’s Word is clear regarding this topic 2 Corinthians 5:8 describes, “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.” When you pass away you are going to one of two places: heaven or hell there is no in between. What the devil will do is attempt to lure you in with these masquerading demons making you think that they are a long lost family member.

I learned this lesson the hard way when I got involved with getting readings from psychic mediums which the Bible completely forbids. I was not saved at the time and didn’t see any harm in it. Boy was I wrong! Remember even Satan masquerades as an angel of light and his demons will do the same thing. They will try to trick you by appearing to you as your family member that you just lost because they know that you will do what it takes to talk to them one last time.

Don’t fall for this trick of the enemy as it will get you so spiritually bound that you will have difficulty breaking free from the devil’s web of deceit. Unfortunately a lot of false prophets use familiar spirits to gain your trust. Just like a medium gets their information from demons, false prophets will do the same. That is why it is so imperative that you are led by the Holy Spirit because He will give you a check in your spirit if something about a person just isn’t right.

How else can one know if someone is operating under a different spirit? The Word of God reveals to us in Matthew 7:15-17, “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.”

If they are not giving the credit to Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ alone for the healing, deliverance, or breakthrough then you know it is a different Jesus that they are preaching. If they don’t attribute the power source that they are using to the Holy Spirit then they are operating under a different spirit. Jesus makes it very clear that we will know them by their fruit.

Another thing that you can do is ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you if you aren’t sure about a pastor, prophet, a new brother or sister in Christ, and even a future spouse. He will tell never lead you astray no matter what.

Conclusion

One of the many ways that the devil deceives God’s children is coming to us as an angel of light. He will use many different vessels to betray you into believing false doctrine including: pastors, teachers, prophets, and even brothers and sisters that claim that they are Christians. One of their missions is to teach you a diluted and sugar coated gospel so that you will not move in the power of God.

It is so important that you ask the Holy Spirit to give you discernment regarding any person that you are allowing to come into or speak into your life. We are living in a time where there are so many false workers of iniquity that it is getting harder and harder to spot them. Remember the devil is very comfortable sitting in a church that is not led by the Holy Spirit. Make sure it is not the one that you are attending!
