Know Your Enemy-Prince of the Air
One thing that we need to understand is the fact that life is completely spiritual. We are battling a very powerful adversary that we cannot see with the naked eye. He has a highly organized militant kingdom that wants nothing more than to kill, steal, and destroy every single one of us, John 10:10. If you don’t truly believe that Satan exists, you have already lost the fight.
His kingdom resides in the heavenly places and we can see that revealed to us by the Apostle Paul. Ephesians 6:12 discloses, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
What we can gage from the passage of Scripture is that our spiritual battle is not with human beings around us, not even close. The warfare is against the unseen world that consists of principalities, powers, rulers that are in the darkness of this age, and spiritual hosts and they are located in “heavenly places” or heavenly regions.
Make no mistake about it, the course of this world is predicated on whether we want to live our lives as followers of Jesus Christ or if we want to follow the prince of the power of the air (Satan). The decisions that you make in life have the ability to bring for life or death. Romans 6:23 is extremely clear as it states, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
What the devil will do is wander the Earth by air (Ephesians 2:2) and by land (Job 2:2) searching for someone that he can devour. He can see if the Lord has a hedge of protection around you or not, Job 1:10. If you are a born again believer of Jesus Christ then you have full authority over the devil and his entire kingdom (Luke 10:19). He that is in you will always be greater than he that is in this world, 1 John 4:4.
What ends up happening is that a Christian will believe that Jesus is Who He says He is and that He died on the cross for our sins, by they do not want to live a repentant lifestyle. Consequently, the sin that they are willfully committing is creating a breach in their protective barrier. The opening that you have allowed the enemy to have access to is giving him the legal right to create chaos in your life.
Ecclesiastes 10:8 is very definitive and it states, “He who digs a pit will fall into it,
And whoever breaks through a wall will be bitten by a serpent.” The old serpent has been around for way longer than you have and he knows our weaknesses when it comes to the desires of the flesh, lusts of the eyes, and the pride of life. The strongholds that he has created in your life are making it difficult to live upright before the Lord.
He is the ruler of the kingdom of the air meaning that he has access to the things that you watch on the television (tell a vision), what you listen to, the media that broadcasts the news feeding us their version of every story. He is intertwined in every form of entertainment that is out there. We have to be so careful on what we are being exposed to.
The will of God is that none should perish but all would have eternal life, 2 Peter 3:9. Often times He will hold back the judgment that we deserve so that we will have more time to repent, that is how much He loves every one of us. He has given us His Word and instruction manual on how to live a successful life as a believer of Jesus Christ. He has also sacrificed His only Son which brought forth reconciliation with our Heavenly Father.
Unfortunately, most Christians do not take the time read the Bible, study it, and apply it to their daily lives. That is how the prince of the air, the devil, can easily come into your space lawfully and wreak havoc. We really have no excuses considering the fact that Christians have the free gift of the Holy Spirit living on the inside of us. He will guide you into absolute truth (John 16:13) and bring Scriptures to your remembrance every time that you need them (John 14:26).
Now, let’s take a look at the passages of Scripture that disclose more in detail about who the prince of the air is.
Ephesians 2:1-2
“And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience.”
Here we can see that the Apostle Paul is giving us a direct contrast from a person who is saved by Jesus versus the person that they were before salvation. From the moment of conception we were brought forth in iniquity with the sin nature already living on the inside of us, Psalm 51:5.
Paul is highlighting this fact when he states that we were dead in trespasses and sins. Then he goes on to say that the course that we were taking was according to the world following the desires of the body and doing the wrong things. The word “course” being used is the Greek word “aiōn” which means: conformably to the age to which this (wicked) world belongs, the devil, who rules the thoughts and deeds of the men of this age.
The Word of God is undisputable regarding us acting like the World. Romans 12:2 reveals, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” The Lord is making it known to us that believers of Jesus Christ should not resemble the world in any kind of way but we should be striving to be transformed into His image daily.
It is vital that we live a life upright in the eyes of the Lord considering the fact that we are supposed to be in the world but not living according to the ways of this world. There has to be a clear distinction between the children of God and the children of disobedience. The last thing that you want the Lord to ever tell you is, “…depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness,” Matthew 7:21!
As we take another look at the passage of Scripture that I am highlighting found in Ephesians 2:1-2 we can see that Paul is addressing someone called “the prince of the power of the air.” The word “prince” being used is the Greek word “archōn” which means: of the devil, the prince of every evil spirit. The word “power” being used is the Greek word “exousia” which means: used in the plural of a certain class of angels, used also of demons: in the plural. The word “aēr” which means: the ruler of the powers in the air i.e. the devil, prince of the demons.
When we piece these crucial words together we can conclude that the devil is the one that is called prince of the air controlling the spiritual forces of evil. One of his primary goals is to ensure that you don’t progress as a born again believer of Jesus Christ. For the people that are not saved, his mission is to make sure that you stay that way. There is an invisible spiritual warfare going on every minute in the Heavenly Realms fighting for your soul.
We know that one of Satan’s headquarter is located in the heavens. If you haven’t read my article regarding this topic please do, it’s called: Know Your Enemy-Where does He Reside. It will give you some more information on one of his residences.
The final part of the last passage that I want to point out is where the Apostle Paul states “sons of disobedience.” The word disobedience means obstinate (stubborn) opposition to the divine will for a person. In other words people that do not want to follow God’s law of commandments, they could care less what God’s plan is for them, and they follow the god of this world.
This is not a good place to be in especially if you are calling yourself a believer of Christ. The Lord is very straightforward about what He thinks regarding the children of disobedience.
For instance:
Ephesians 5:6 “Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.”
Colossians 3:5-6 “Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience.”
These passages of Scripture give us some clarity when it comes to the characteristics of a son of disobedience. The devil also called the prince of the air wants to make sure that he can take as many people with him to the lake of fire as he can. He will blind your eyes, make it hard to hear God, tempt you with the things of the world like he did with Jesus, Matthew 4:8-9.
It is vital that you stay prayed up, suited up, and in your Word daily. The devil knows that his time is short and he will stop at nothing to make sure that he wreaks havoc in your life and the ones that you love.
Conclusion
Make no mistake about it; you are fighting a spiritual battle daily with a powerful adversary that you cannot see with the naked eye. He doesn’t play fair and will do what it takes to ensure your demise. He will use worldly things to try to ensnare you in one of his vicious traps.
The Lord has a plan for every one of us and wishes nothing more than to have His children in heaven eternally. Unfortunately a lot of people have religion and not relationship and so it is very easy to get caught up in Satan’s web of lies, don’t let that be you!
