Know Your Enemy-What does He Look Like

One thing is clear and that is that we are up against a powerful adversary that wants nothing more than to completely destroy every single one of us, John 10:10. One of his greatest deceptions is to make us think that he does not exist. That way, he can hide in plain sight without even being detected. If you don’t believe that you are fighting a spiritual battle daily then you have already lost the fight.

The Word of God is saturated with Scripture that give us wisdom on the enemy that we face. The Apostle Paul discloses to us in the book of Ephesians that we are to put on our full armor of God so that we can withstand the schemes of the devil. Why would Paul be so adamant about putting on spiritual warfare gear if there was no reason to? That wouldn’t make any sense.

God is very clear when He discloses to all of us that we perish because of our lack of knowledge (Hosea 4:6) and also for us not to be ignorant of the devil’s devices (2 Corinthians 2:11). It is to our advantage that we fully understand that life is completely spiritual and we are engaging in full on combat with an adversary and his whole demonic kingdom daily.

They typically cannot be seen with the naked eye and that is how they are able to remain hidden. What can be seen are the effects that they have on believers and non-believers alike. The Apostle Paul describes it perfectly in Ephesians 6:12 and it states, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

In this passage of Scripture Paul is clear that we are not in a battle with a human being that we can physically see but our fight is with spirit beings operating in heavenly places. Unfortunately many Christians don’t know very much about the spiritual realm let alone combat against it. It is vital that we read the Word of God, study it, digest it, and apply it to our daily lives.

Now that we have an idea of the enemy that we are facing what exactly does he look like? There are some passages of Scripture in the Holy Bible in both the Old Testament and the New Testament that give us an idea of what the devil looks life.

For Instance:

Genesis 3:14 “So the Lord God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this,
you are cursed more than all cattle, and more than every beast of the field; on your belly you shall go, and you shall eat dust all the days of your life.”

2 Corinthians 11:14 “And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.”

1 Peter 5:8 “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”

Revelation 12:9 “So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.”

From these verses of Scripture we can see that the devil is described as a serpent, an angel of light, like a roaring lion, and a great dragon. As we dig deeper into what Satan looks like we can conclude that he is sneaky, he seeks to devour, and he is a master deceiver misleading us to believing that he is an angel of light.

Let’s take a look at some passages of Scripture that give us a whole different side of what our enemy looks like.

Ezekiel 28:11-19

“…Thus says the Lord God:

“You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.

You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering:
The sardius, topaz, and diamond, beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold. The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes was prepared for you on the day you were created.

“You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; you were on the holy mountain of God; you walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones.
You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, till iniquity was found in you.

“By the abundance of your trading you became filled with violence within, and you sinned; therefore I cast you as a profane thing out of the mountain of God; and I destroyed you, O covering cherub, from the midst of the fiery stones.

“Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor; I cast you to the ground, I laid you before kings, that they might gaze at you.

“You defiled your sanctuaries by the multitude of your iniquities, by the iniquity of your trading; therefore I brought fire from your midst; it devoured you, and I turned you to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all who saw you.

All who knew you among the peoples are astonished at you; you have become a horror, and shall be no more forever.” ’ ”

There is so much to unpack in these descriptive passages of Scripture written by the prophet Ezekiel. They are perhaps the most revealing words that describe Satan in the entire Word of God. What we can gather from these verses is the fact that the Lord God took His time in creating Satan, every kind of precious stone is mentioned that literally covered his body.

He is stated as being a seal of perfection, wise, and perfectly beautiful. Not only was he surrounded by beautiful stones that encompassed his body but he was created with several musical instruments inside of him. This created being was considered to be perfect in his ways. The word “perfect” being used here is the Hebrew word tāmîm which means: having integrity: of God’s way.

Then Ezekiel begins to disclose some vital information when he states, “Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty…” He was created so exquisitely that he began to think he was better than his own Creator. He believed that he had such an influence that he could take other angels with him when he got cast out of the holy mountain of God. He did just that and in fact was able to successfully convince one third of the angels to follow him, Revelation 12:4.

We know from Scripture that he can appear as a dragon, a serpent, like a lion, or an angel of light, but his true form was beautiful and almost perfect. Another thing that we can ascertain from these Bible passages is that he was made with musical instruments in his body. That is why it is so important that you pay attention to the things that are going into your ear gates.

He will use vibrations, mesmerizing sounds, and demonic music to put you in a trance. I have articles about protecting your ear gate and will list them here: Guarding Your Ear Gates-Part 1 and Guarding Your Ear Gates-Part 2.

The final thing that I want to point out from these passages of Scripture is the word “cherub” which is the Hebrew word kᵊrûḇ which Ezekiel describes as: four living creatures, each with four faces, lion, ox, eagle, and man, having the figure and hands of men, and the feet of calves. Each has four wings, two of which are stretched upward, meeting above and sustaining the throne of Yahweh; two of them stretched downwards so as to cover the creatures themselves. The cherubim never turn but go straight forward, as do the wheels of the cherubic chariot, and they are full of eyes and are like burning coals of fire.

This is quite the depiction and we can see that before his fall Satan played a huge role in the kingdom of God. He was one of the ones that covered His throne. That is why you shouldn’t find it strange when he comes to you as an angel of light because he knows how to imitate the Lord almost flawlessly. The best ways to overcome his tactics is to be led by the Holy Spirit, pray, fast, develop intimacy with God, and stay in His Word!

Conclusion

Make no mistake about it, life is completely spiritual and you are in a daily battle with a powerful adversary that you cannot see with the naked eye. He is an enemy that you cannot defeat within your own strength. It is important that you gain an understanding of how he operates so that you can prevent yourself from being trapped in his devices.

Throughout Scripture both in the Old Testament and the New Testament, the Holy Spirit gives us revelation about the devil that we face and his tactics. One of the things about him that is mentioned is the way that he looks. So far what we can conclude is that he is a dragon, a serpent, like a lion, or an angel of light, but his true form was beautiful and almost perfect. One thing that is for sure is the fact that he wants nothing more than to kill, steal, and destroy every one of us!
