Positive Quote for the Week-Spiritual Maturity
“Spiritual maturity says: even though I want to say exactly what is on my mind, I will hold my tongue! When in doubt, silence it out!” Erica Willis
One of the quickest ways to get yourself in a mess is by the misuse of your tongue. It has the power to uplift you and those around you or cause damage to yourself and everyone you come into contact with. You will have those moments when you want to snap back, clap back, and push back; but it is in those instances that you want to allow the Lord to fight your battles for you. That takes spiritual maturity.
You will know that you have grown spiritually when you can see the fruits of the Holy Spirit exhibiting in your life. One of the fruits of God’s Spirit is love and so when you find yourself choosing to love instead of hate in all situations, you know that you are heading in the right direction.
There is so much power in the words that we say and how we say them. God is extremely clear about how He feels about the use of your tongue. Proverbs 18:21 definitively states, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” You can literally speak life or death over yourself, your loved ones, and your circumstance. Make it a point to use your words to bless those around you even if you feel like they don’t deserve it.
There is power in silence! It takes so much more effort to remain humble and gentle in those moments that you want to show up and show out. Spiritual maturity says: when you are ever in doubt, silence it out. It is never worth the repercussions that you will endure when speaking curses, hatred, animosity, and anger versus speaking out blessings, love, and compassion in every situation!
Scriptures that you can meditate on regarding loving those that don’t show love back:
- John 13:34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
- John 15:12 “This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”
- Romans 13:8 “Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law.:
- 1 John 3:11 “For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.”
- 1 John 4:7 “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.”
- Proverbs 10:12 “Hatred stirs up strife, But love covers all sins.”
- Ephesians 4:32 “And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.”
