Psalm 91-God’s Protective Prayer-Part 4
Psalm 91 is one of the most powerful protective prayers in the entire Word of God. It will cover any kind of adversity that you will ever have to face in your life. For instance: the terror by night (physical attacks from others or spiritual attacks), arrows by day (the enemy shooting arrows from afar that wound us where it hurts the most), pestilence (sickness and disease), and destruction (calamities from natural disasters).
There are some stipulations that need to be fulfilled in order for you to ensure that these promises are effectively activated in your life and those are found in Psalm 91:1. The Lord provides His children with His protective shield against all fear invoking terror, all snares from the devil, every sickness and disease, and disasters. It is really up to us to take God’s Word and apply it to our daily life.
This particular Psalm is one that you want to begin your day with; pray it over yourself and your family. It is one thing to glance through the Scriptures embedded in Psalm 91 but it is an entirely different thing to have them so marinated in your heart and mind that they become a part of your thought process.
When adversity hits you best believe that you are not going to have time to pull out your Bible, Bible app, or Google to try to find Scriptures to help you with your situation. You want to have them already in your Scriptural memory bank ready to go when the enemy attacks. Remember, the more of the Holy Bible that you have in your heart and mind, the more arsenals you have at your disposal.
We are living in a time that is getting darker by the second and the devil is on a full on prowl seeking someone to devour, John 10:10. We need to be sober and vigilant (1 Peter 5:8), ready in season and out of season (2 Timothy 4:2), and armed with the Word of God which is our double-edge Sword (Hebrews 4:12).
The last thing that you want to be as a believer of Jesus Christ is unprepared. We really don’t have any excuses because the Lord has given us all of the tools that we need for any situation that we will ever come across and it is all found in His Word. Psalm 91 is one example of an effective warfare chapter and it is crucial that you take the time to comprehend it completely.
The Lord had been impressing on my heart the importance of this particular Psalm. That is why I am going to go through every single verse found in these powerful passages so that you can have a full understanding of what the Lord is telling us about His protective covering. If you haven’t read the first three articles pertaining to Psalm 91, please take a moment to read them: Psalm 91-God’s Protective Prayer-Part 1, Psalm 91-God’s Protective Prayer-Part 2, and Psalm 91-God’s Protective Prayer-Part 3.
Now let’s take a take a look at some more of God’s amazing promises found in Psalm 91.
Psalm 91:7
“A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it shall not come near you.”
Here we can see that the writer of this Psalm through the leading of the Holy Spirit is providing us with some more of the Lord’s amazing promises. God assures us that if we stand on the Words given to us in these powerful passages of Scripture, the calamity going on around us will not affect us. We are given the description of the many different circumstances that can cause us harm found in Psalm 91:5-6.
Just recently we experienced some of the most difficult times that we have ever had to face worldwide. This virus wreaked havoc on the lives of so many people at such an unfathomable rate. It really brings this verse of Scripture to life because thousands of people were literally falling deathly ill everywhere that you looked.
This kind of scenario can make it difficult to stand on God’s Word by faith and that is why it is so important to have Psalm 91 embedded in your heart. This will give you Scriptures that the Holy Spirit will bring to your remembrance to use for your protection. When adverse circumstances occur, those are the moments that you need to stand firm on the foundation of God proclaiming His Word over you and your family.
We have to get to a place in our lives as believers of Jesus Christ that we view the Word of God as one of the most powerful warfare weapons that the Lord has provided us with. Hebrews 4:12 discloses, “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword…” Make no mistake about it, the Lord’s Word gives you every warfare strategy that you will ever need for any situation that you will ever encounter!
Now let’s take a closer look at the passage of Scripture that I am highlighting Psalm 91:7. The words “at your right hand” being used here is the Hebrew word “yāmîn” which means: pertaining to a situation-a wall on their right hand and on their left hand similarly. The words “come near” being used is the Hebrew word “nāḡaš” which means: draw or come near, pestilence personified (in the flesh).
When we dissect the key words found in this verse of Scripture we can determine that the psalmist is disclosing some important promises to us. When you find yourself in a situation where there are people falling deathly ill because of sickness or disease or dying by other means; the Lord declares that He will build a wall of protection around you on your right side and left side.
Then the Lord discloses something so key for us to understand when He states “it shall not come near you.” In other words He is letting us know that if we grab a hold of these promises and don’t let them go, He guarantees that the calamity going on around us will not come near us. This is such a powerful assurance that we need to get deep down in our spirit.
It doesn’t matter what things look like around you, if you follow the stipulations found in Psalm 91:1 then these promises are for you. There will be times where you will have to contend and stand on the Word of God no matter what, but the Lord is faithful to come through on His Word. 2 Thessalonians 3:3 reiterates this promise when it states, “But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one.”
Another promise that the Lord describes that I want to go over is found in the next verse of Scripture.
Psalm 91:8
“Only with your eyes shall you look, and see the reward of the wicked.”
Here we can see a shift in this powerful Old Testament Psalm once again. It gives us a direct contrast from the rewards of protection that the Lord gives His children versus the reward that the Lord has given to the wicked for their immorality. Notice how the writer of this particular Psalm uses the words “shall you look” meaning that you will see the destruction, the deadly pestilence, the arrows, the terror by night, and the snares of the fowler all around you but none of it will harm you.
God will make it apparent to His children that He has them securely protected under His shelter and covering. We will see it happen right before our own eyes. Remember, we can never forget the stipulations that afford us the opportunity for this level of protection and those are: to dwell in the secret place of the most High and abide under the shadow of the Almighty, Psalm 91:1.
The entire Bible is saturated with the guarantees that the Lord gives believers of Jesus Christ and the promises of Psalm 91 are no exception. We need to grab a hold of God’s Truth and make God’s promises our own. We can never underestimate the power that the Lord’s Word holds; it is literally sharper than a double-edged Sword, Hebrews 4:12. It is our guideline to how we are to live our lives as believers of Jesus Christ.
Now let’s take a closer look at the verse of Scripture that I am highlighting Psalm 91:8. The words “shall you look” being used is the Hebrew word “nāḇaṭ” which means: to regard, to pay attention to, consider. The words “the reward” being used here is the Hebrew word “šillumâ” which means: requital (recompense), retribution (payback). The words “of the wicked” being used is the Hebrew word “rāšāʿ” which means: guilty one, wicked (hostile to God), guilty of sin.
So when we take apart these key phrases in this particular passage we can determine that the Lord is revealing to us that we need to pay close attention and consider the recompense or payback that is coming to those that choose to be workers of iniquity. This should make us even more grounded in our faith that God is Who He says He is and He will follow through with what He promises He will do.
Conclusion
Psalm 91 is one of the most powerful chapters out of the entire Word of God. It literally covers every kind of protection from anything that you will ever come in contact with. It is to our advantage that we take these amazing passages and allow them to remain saturated in our hearts and minds.
We are living in a time where darkness is no longer hiding but is becoming more prominent as the years go by. You cannot afford to be unarmed when the enemy attacks you because he will. The more of God’s Word that you have deep down in your spirit, the more artillery you will have to fight back with. Never take your Sword for granted because it is just that: a two-edged, sharp, and powerful Sword!
