Psalm 91-God’s Protective Prayer-Part 6
One of the most powerful protective prayers found in the Word of God is Psalm 91. It covers any adversity, trial, tribulation, and storm that you will ever have to face. The Lord gives us the stipulations that we need to abide by in order to ensure that the promises found in this amazing Psalm will be effectively activated in our lives.
The times that we are living in are becoming darker and darker by the minute. The enemy is not hiding anymore but is out in the open. We need to get to a place where we consume God’s Word morning, noon, and night. Psalm 91 is one of those chapters out of the Bible that you will want to get deep down in your heart and mind. Not only will it provide a protective covering for you, but it also covers your family!
We just came out of such a trying time that affected this entire World where people were losing their lives at an aggressive rate. This Psalm will protect you from destruction, calamity, the snares of the enemy, arrows by day, pestilence, and anything else that would come against you. God follows through on what His Word says so if He said it He will make it good, Numbers 23:19.
It is to our benefit that we learn what the Lord’s promises are for us as believers of Jesus Christ. The only way that you are going to gain the necessary knowledge needed to effectively apply God’s assurances is by reading your Bible. The enemy has so many of us bound because of our lack of knowledge of the Lord’s Word, Hosea 4:6. God is clear when He states that you shall know the Truth and it will make you free, John 8:31-32.
Now let’s take a look at some more of the Lord’s amazing promises that are found in Psalm 91.
Psalm 91:11
“For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.”
Here we can see that the Psalmist through the leading of the Holy Spirit is disclosing another powerful guarantee given to us by the Lord. Before breaking down this particular passage of Scripture let’s take a look at some key verses that give us an idea of the role that angels play in the life of a believer.
Hebrews 1:13-14 details, “But to which of the angels has He ever said:
“Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool”? Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?” These passages give us some very important information regarding the part that angels play in the lives of Christians. The writer of Hebrews mentions the word “ministering spirits” the word spirit being used means: spirit higher than man and lower than God, an angel. The word ministering means: to serve or perform a work. So in other words an angel is a spirit that serves and performs work for Christians that are saved.
The Lord gives us another level of protection through the angels that are assigned to every one of us. If you think back on your life you can probably remember times when something horrible could have happened, but somehow and some way you were protected. A lot of times God’s angels are the ones that are protecting us from danger and we don’t even realize it.
Now that we have more of an idea of the role that angels play in our lives let’s take a look at the verse of Scripture that I am highlighting, Psalm 91:11. The words “He shall give charge” being used here is the Hebrew word “ṣāvâ” which means: to command, charge, give orders. The words “His angels” being used is the Hebrew word “mal’āḵ” which means: angel, messenger of God.
The words “to keep you” being used is the Hebrew word “šāmar” which means: keep, preserve, and protect. The words “your ways” being used here is the Hebrew word “dereḵ” which means: course of life, actions, and undertaking. What we can determine by these key phrases is that the Lord is guaranteeing His children angelic protection. He is the One that will give them the command or orders to safeguard and preserve the course of our life, our actions, and our mission (purpose).
One thing to keep in mind is the fact that the Lord is assuring this powerful promise to those that are following the stipulations attached to it. Those requirements are found in Psalm 91:1 and include: dwelling in the secret place and abiding under the shadow of the Almighty. The Lord wants to build an intimate relationship with every single one of us which is going to require dedicated time put aside just for Him!
We want to be as connected to the Lord as possible so much so that we literally become a part of His shadow. There are so many incredible promises that the Lord gives us in Psalm 91 but He is requiring our obedience to His Word. You cannot expect God’s full security when you say that you are a Christian but everything about you says otherwise. If you have open doors to the enemy, you are giving him the legal right to come into your life and wreak havoc. God will not go against His Word and He is very clear that the wages of sin is death, Romans 6:23.
If you haven’t read the first articles that I have written breaking down Psalm 91, please take the time to do so: Psalm 91-God’s Protective Prayer-Part 1, Psalm 91-God’s Protective Prayer-Part 2, and Psalm 91-God’s Protective Prayer-Part 3, and Psalm 91-God’s Protective Prayer-Part 4, Psalm 91-God’s Protective Prayer-Part 5.
Now let’s take a look at a continuation of the Lord’s promise pertaining to His angelic protection.
Psalm 91:12
“In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.”
Here we can see that the writer is disclosing to us one of the ways that God’s angels will shelter us. The words “they shall bear you up” being used here is the Hebrew word “nāśā’” which means: to bear, carry, support, sustain, and endure. What we can conclude by dissecting this first part of the passage of Scripture is the fact that the angels that the Lord has assigned to His children will support and sustain you in their hands.
The second part of this passage is self-explanatory when the writer states, “…lest you dash your foot against a stone.” God is in the details as He lets us know that His angels are commanded to protect us at an extreme level. The protection is so thorough that they will prevent us from something as small as a stumble or striking our foot. That is a powerful covering of protection that the Lord is guaranteeing those that choose to abide by His principles and stipulations found in Psalm 91:1.
As children of God we are guaranteed shelter from any and every circumstance that you will ever have to face. Psalm 91:3 discloses God’s deliverance from the snare of the fowler; Psalm 91:5-6 reveals the Lord’s security from terrors by night, arrows by day, pestilence, and destruction. We can clearly see all levels of protection listed in these passages out of Psalm 91. It is up to us to grab a hold of these promises and make them our own.
Conclusion
When you take the time to study Psalm 91 you will recognize that it is one of the most powerful protective prayers in the entire Word of God. It covers any adversity and calamity that you will come across. Make it a point to get every passage of Scripture deep down in your mind and heart so much so that they become a part of your thought process.
When you find yourself in a situation that is threatening your well-being, you are not going to have time to pull out your Bible, Bible app, or Google. You have to have your weapons (God’s Word) ready to go when you need them. The Holy Spirit is our Helper and He will bring Scriptures to your remembrance in your time of need. Don’t allow your Scriptural memory bank to be completely blank, be ready in season and out of season, 2 Timothy 4:2.
