Scriptures with Stipulations-All Things Work Together for Your Good
The Word of God is filled with so many powerful passages of Scripture that provide us with benefits that the Lord has afforded us to have. Unfortunately a lot of times we don’t see any results to these promises because they are applied incorrectly. That is because we rely on our Pastors to break down the Scriptures for us and often times they don’t provide you with the stipulations that need to be met in order for God’s promise to be fulfilled successfully.
Both in the Old Testament and the New Testament the will of God for our lives is laid out in His Word. The thing is that we hear the verses being preached but we do not take the time to study God’s Word on our own. This is a very dangerous habit to have especially right now with so many false preachers, prophets, and teachers trying to lead you astray.
God is very clear about what He has to say regarding us studying His Word for ourselves. 2 Timothy 2:15 reveals, “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” Here we can see that the Apostle Paul is letting us know that it is our responsibility to study the Scriptures so that we have a complete understanding of what they are saying in the proper context.
In order for you to effectively receive God’s promises you need to make sure that you are abiding by the stipulation connected to it. The Lord’s Word is a book of law (James 1:22) and God’s law is found on every page of every chapter in the entire Bible. These rules and guidelines were put into place for the whole creation without exception.
So if you are an heir of God, living upright in His eyes, adhering to His prerequisites; then you qualify for every one of the Lord’s assurances. Unfortunately a lot of Christians go to church on a Sunday afternoon and don’t open their Bible or study it the rest of the week. What ends up happening is they miss out on the chance for the Lord to bless them because they are misinterpreting and misapplying the promises of God.
Let’s take a look at one of the most used passages of Scripture that has a stipulation attached to it.
Romans 8:28
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”
I have heard this verse out of the book of Romans being said so many times and just assumed that because I call myself a Christian that it “just” applied to me. This kind of thinking is what prevents you and me from receiving all that God has in store for us as His children. The Lord has given us all the information that we would ever need to live a victorious and successful life as believers of Jesus Christ. That knowledge is found in His Word.
Taking a look at this passage of Scripture a little deeper we can see God’s promise that He made: “And we know that all things work together for good…” Breaking down this part of the verse we can determine that the words “that all things” being used here is the Greek word “pas” which means: of a certain definite totality of the sum of things, what things are meant to be.
The words “work together” being used is the Greek word “synergeō” which means: God co-working provides all things for good or so that it is well with them. The word “good” being used here is the Greek word “agathos” which means: commandment profitable to those who keep it, for good, to advantage.
As we dissect these words we can determine that God is saying that the sum of everything that we go through in our lives will go well if God is co-working it out with us. We also know that every commandment that we keep is profitable to us and we can use it to our advantage. It doesn’t get any better than that!
Now let’s take a deeper dive into the stipulation provided: “…to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” The words “to those who” being used here is the Greek word “hoti” which means: that, because, and since. The word “love” being used is the Greek word “agapaō” which means: When used of love to a master, God or Christ, the word involves the idea of affectionate reverence, prompt obedience, grateful recognition of benefits received.
The words “the called” being used here is the Greek word “klētos” which means: “invited (by God in the proclamation of the gospel) to obtain eternal salvation in the kingdom of God through Christ.” The word “purpose” being used here is the Greek word “prothesis” which means: with purpose of heart.
Now that we’ve analyzed the stipulation that is attached to the promise found in Romans 8:28 we have more of an understanding of what God requires of us. First in order for a Christian to qualify for this blessing you have to make sure that you love the Lord completely. Matthew 22:37 breaks down what that means perfectly, “Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.”
Then the Lord is disclosing to us that those that are “called” will be invited to receive eternal life through Jesus Christ and what He did for us on the cross at Calvary. He is not just talking about being called so that you can do your own thing and live your life your way but He is saying that He wants you to live according to His purpose.
Once you gain the knowledge of what is required to effectively attain this amazing blessing, you can apply it to your daily life correctly. God does not lie so if He said it, He will do it, Numbers 23:19. The problem is that a lot of us do not take the time to study God’s Word for ourselves and so we miss the Lord’s stipulations entirely.
Conclusion
I used to often wonder why God’s promises were not working in my life like the Lord’s Word said they would. It wasn’t until I gained knowledge regarding the stipulations attached to a good amount of God’s guarantees that I began to understand the requirements that God has for us in order to receive His promises.
We can never forget the fact that your Bible is a Biblical law that the Lord put into place for both His Kingdom and the kingdom of darkness to follow. He will never go against His Word and even places it above His own Name, Psalm 138:2. In a court of law, in order for you to see results you have to go by the rules and regulations put into place. The same thing applies in the courtroom of Heaven; in order for you to see His promises fulfilled you need to make sure that you are following the stipulations that He put into place.
