The Lord’s Model Prayer-Forgive our Trespasses
One of the best ways that we can communicate with our heavenly Father is through prayer. We can see the significance of prayer played out through the life that Jesus Christ led while He was on the Earth. There are several instances where He went by Himself to pray to our Heavenly Father, John 17:11. He was demonstrating to us the need for prayer.
If the Lord Jesus Christ prayed continually and He was perfect how much more is there a need for us to pray? God wants to hear from us daily and not just for a moment on a Sunday afternoon church service. Just like you would speak to your spouse, children, or those that are in your inner circle you want to talk to the Lord in the same way.
He is a loving Father and desires to have an intimate relationship with every one of His children. Make it a point to set aside alone time daily with God just to communicate and touch basis with Him. Jesus Christ knew how significant prayer was and in fact provided us with an outline of how we should pray.
The Lord’s Model prayer is found in Matthew 6:9-13, I have posted it down below.
Matthew 6:9-13
“In this manner, therefore, pray:
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
10 Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”
When we take a look at these passages of Scripture we can determine that what Jesus was giving us is a framework on how we should pray. In Matthew 6:9, “In this manner…” which is the Greek word “houtō(s)” which means: in the way in which it should be done. There is so much depth in the Lord’s Model Prayer and it is important that we gain a clear understanding of key elements within it.
One of the greatest misconceptions is that we don’t really need to pray because God’s will on Earth will be done regardless. That is very far from the truth in fact the Lord has given every one of us free will. He created us to have the ability to make choices on our own without being forced into anything.
That is why prayer is vital because what it does is invites the Lord to implement His will without violating our own free will. God will never go against His Word and in fact places it above His own Name, Psalm 138:2. So when He gave us dominion over the Earth, that is exactly what He meant.
Now that we have an understanding of the importance of prayer let’s take a look at the fourth part of the Lord’s Model Prayer found in the book of Matthew.
Matthew 6:12
“And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.”
The word “debts” used here is the Greek word “opheilēma” which means: both debt and sin, to remit the penalty of one’s sins, to forgive them. The word “debtors” being used is the Greek word “opheiletēs” which means: one who has not yet made amends to one whom he has injured.
So when we break down these two important words we can determine that one of the key elements that Jesus gave us pertaining to the Lord’s Model Prayer is forgiveness. Our prayer is being attached to a stipulation: the level that we forgive the ones that have harmed us regardless of what they did is the same level of forgiveness that we will receive from the Lord.
This is the part of the Lord’s Model Prayer that can get overlooked if you are not dissecting every element to the prayer. If you are just repeating it, you may just repeat this portion without truly understanding that you are saying. The Lord genuinely cares about the condition of your heart especially before you begin to pray. You want to make sure that you have the right heart posture.
Remember forgiving those that have mistreated you, done you wrong, and neglected you in one way or another is commanded in order to receive the Lord’s forgiveness. Matthew 6:14 is very clear as Jesus states, “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.”
It is extremely necessary and crucial for you to forgive anyone that you are holding unforgiveness towards. There can be so many negative effects, negative emotions, and negative feelings when you refuse to let go of the offense, pain, or hurt that another person caused you to experience.
An unforgiving sprit is one of the enemy’s number one devices that he uses against Christians. What happens when you hold onto an offense and refuse to let it go is it gives the devil and his minions the legal right to torment your life and that is exactly what the will do. They intentionally throw fiery arrows at your mind to get you to reflect on that one thing that so and so did to you so that you can develop unforgiveness in your heart.
The devil knows your every weakness, we are emotional by nature and he will use that to ensure your demise. There are so many Christians that are getting tormented daily by demonic spirits simply because they refuse to forgive those that have done them wrong. The Lord really had to deal with me in this area because I was that person that just didn’t let things go.
When I tell you that I have learned my lessons on open doors to the enemy and his kingdom that is an understatement! It is only by the grace of God that I was able to overcome the schemes of the devil. Now equipped with the knowledge of the Word of the Living God, I am going to share with you some Scriptures that will show you the dangers of holding onto unforgiveness.
Matthew 18:34-35 details, “And his master was angry, and delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him. “So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses.”
A little background on what’s going on in these two verses of Scripture, this is a part of a parable that Jesus is explaining to Peter regarding an unforgiving servant. He owed his master ten thousand talents which was a lot of money in that time and was begging him not to sell him, his wife, and his children to pay his debt. He just simply could not pay the money that he owed him, Matthew 18:24-25. The master of the servant felt compassion towards him therefore forgiving him of his debt, Matthew 18:27.
Instead of returning the favor to a fellow servant who owed him a fraction of what he owed his master, he threw him into prison instead and refused to forgive him of his debt, Matthew 18:31. Now we come to Matthew 18:34, when the servant’s master found out about his wicked servant and the unforgiveness that he fostered in his heart, he delivered him over to the torturers. Then Jesus makes it extremely plain when He states in Matthew 18:35, “So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses.”
In other words what the Lord is saying is that if we fail to forgive our brothers and sisters their trespasses, our Heavenly Father will deliver us over to the tormentor (Satan and his kingdom). That is how dangerous hanging on to unforgiveness truly is! The will of God is for us to forgive others as He forgave us, Ephesians 4:32. It is scattered throughout the Bible in so many different areas that there really is no way of getting around it.
I know there are some things that people do to you that are so painful that you find it so difficult to forgive them. You feel like they don’t deserve your forgiveness. The thing is we didn’t deserve the Lord’s forgiveness of our sins yet he forgave us for every wicked, nasty, and vile thing that we have even done. In fact He sent His only son to die for our transgressions so that we would have a chance at eternal life, John 3:16.
He expects us to extend the same grace to others. The act of forgiveness is such a powerful thing and you are the one that will benefit the most when you let that heavy burden go. Unforgiveness is one of the primary things that can hinder your prayer to the Lord. The bottom line is the offense that you are holding onto is never worth the repercussions that it will bring.
Another powerful passage of Scripture that reveals to us the importance of forgiveness is found in the book of Luke.
Luke 6:37
“Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.”
Luke through the Holy Spirit is revealing something to us in this particular verse that is very telling. He is letting us know that in order for us to be forgiven by the Lord there is a stipulation: we must first forgive. In other words if we haven’t taken an inventory of our own hearts to see if there is any bitterness or unforgiveness towards others prior to going before the Lord to ask Him for forgiveness for our transgressions, we can come to the conclusion that we aren’t forgiven.
That is a dangerous place to be, you don’t want to be in a position where you don’t know where you stand with the Lord simply because you refuse to forgive others. Trust me, I know how difficult it can be to let the horrible things go that others have done to you and not dwell on them. It took me some time to understand that I was placing shackles on myself by clinging onto bitterness.
The devil will use this door and bust it wide open. Before you know it, your heart is filled with animosity, anger, wrath, hate, and every other negative emotion that you can think of. That root of bitterness will begin to mess with your peaceful sleep, mental health, and overall well-being and you won’t be able to pinpoint where it’s coming from. It all stems from your unforgiveness, you have to get rid of if no matter what it takes because it is not worth the mental, physical, emotional, and most importantly spiritual damage that it will cause!
How do you come to the Lord with a clean heart before you even begin to pray? The first step you want to take is repent to God for not forgiving your brothers and sisters as He commands us to do. Then allow the power of the Holy Spirit to give you the strength needed to let go of past events, painful experiences, and the emotional pain that others have put you through.
You don’t want that root of bitterness to dig any deeper creating more issues especially during your intimate time in prayer to your Heavenly Father. Make the conscious decision that you want a fresh start because it is the only way that you can begin to display true forgiveness.
Release the negative emotions and let every old wound heal. It might be one of the hardest things that you will ever have to do but it can be done. The Lord can heal those open wounds but you have to be willing to let go of that poison of unforgiveness! It will take a renewal of your mind which can only be done by the Word of God. Choose the power of forgiveness versus allowing it to come between your relationship with the Lord!
Conclusion
There is no getting around it, prayer is extremely important in the life of every believer of Jesus Christ. It was so significant that the Lord gave us a guideline that we can follow so that we don’t miss the key elements regarding prayer. The Lord’s Model prayer is powerful and effective and it is imperative that we gain the understanding of every part within this prayer
The fourth portion of the prayer has to do with forgiveness. Not only is it recommended to forgive those that have offended you, it is commanded. The Lord’s Biblical law will never change so we either gain the knowledge pertaining to the principles of God or we don’t. Hosea 4:6 is very clear, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…”
