The Lord’s Model Prayer-Hallowed be your Name

What is the Lord’s Model Prayer?
The Lord’s Model prayer is found in Matthew 6:9-13, I have posted it down below.
Matthew 6:9-13
“In this manner, therefore, pray:
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
10 Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”
When we take a look at these passages of Scripture we can determine that what Jesus was giving us is an outline on how we should pray. It wasn’t meant to be used repetitiously and in fact the Lord made it clear on His stance when it comes to repetitious words.
Matthew 6:7 details, “And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.” Here we can see that Jesus Himself is speaking out against vain repetitions including prayers. That is one indication that lets us know that the Lord’s model prayer was meant to be used as an outline.
The other indication is the fact that Jesus states in Matthew 6:9, “In this manner…” which is the Greek word “houtō(s)” which means: in the way in which it should be done. So, what the Lord is revealing to us through the Model prayer is just that, a model for us to follow and not just to repeat.
One of the greatest misconceptions is that we don’t really need to pray because God’s will on Earth will be done regardless. That is very far from the truth in fact the Lord has given every one of us free will. He created us to have the ability to make choices on our own without being forced into anything.
That is why prayer is vital because what it does is invites the Lord to implement His will without violating our own free will. God will never go against His Word and in fact places it above His own Name, Psalm 138:2. So when He gave us dominion over the Earth, that is exactly what He meant.
Let’s take a look at the first part of the Lord’s Model Prayer found in the book of Matthew.
Matthew 6:9
“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.” The words “hallowed be” being used here is the Greek words “Hagiazō” which means: to render or to acknowledge, to be venerable or to hallow. In other words it’s recognizing God for the holiness and glory that He encompasses. You don’t want to approach Him just any kind of way, He is our Heavenly Father and we need to approach Him with that level of respect.
Understanding the Names that represent God will give us an idea of the different roles that He plays as our Father.
For instance:
Jehovah Jireh-God Provides
Genesis 22:14 “And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”
Jehovah Rapha-God Heals
Exodus 15:26 “And said, “If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.”
Jehovah Shammah-God is Present
Ezekiel 48:35 “All the way around shall be eighteen thousand cubits; and the name of the city from that day shall be: THE LORD IS THERE.”
Jehovah Tsidkenu-God is my Righteousness
Jeremiah 23:6 “In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell safely;
Now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.”
Jehovah Rohi-God is my Shepherd
Psalm 23:1 “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
Jehovah Shalom-God is my Peace
Judges 6:24 “So Gideon built an altar there to the Lord, and called it The-Lord-Is-Peace. To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.”
Jehovah Mekaddishkem-God Sanctifies Us
Leviticus 20:8 “And you shall keep My statutes, and perform them: I am the Lord who sanctifies you.”
Jehovah Nissi-God is my Banner
Exodus 17:15 “And Moses built an altar and called its name, The-Lord-Is-My-Banner.”
As we read about the Lord’s character and His qualities we can see how He operates in our lives. The more that we get into prayer and understand our heavenly Father the more we can appropriate those special qualities into our situation. When we feel like the enemy is coming in like a flood we can mediate on the Lord being Jehovah Nissi-Our banner. Meaning that before the enemy can see us He sees the Lord’s banner that goes ahead of us.
Never forget that because of the shed blood of Jesus Christ, children of God have the ability to receive good health, healing, deliverance, protection, and provision (the Lord supplying the needs to His children). That is one of the main reasons that it is vital that we get into the Word of God and study the Lord’s character. He wants every believer to have a life and a life abundantly, John 10:10.
When you know your Heavenly Father and have a personal relationship with Him, you will you have a natural reverence for Him. You won’t just approach Him any way that you want to but you will come to Him with the upmost respect and admiration. We can never forget that God is the Almighty, our Creator, our Peace, our Provider, and our Sanctifier. He is the “I Am” meaning whatever you need He is that and more!
Conclusion
The Lord’s Model Prayer was meant to be used as a guideline to show us how to pray. It was never meant for us to use repetitiously. The beginning of the prayer teaches us that we are praying to God the Father and His Name is to be hollowed (to render or to acknowledge, to be venerable or to hallow).
He is to be treated as the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords because that is exactly Who He is. One thing that we know beyond a shadow of a doubt is the fact that whether you are a believer or not, every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, Philippians 2:11.
