The Lord’s Model Prayer-Your Kingdom Come
One thing that we know beyond a shadow of a doubt is that the Lord Jesus Christ prayed consistently. What that lets us know is how significant prayer in the life of a believer truly is. It is actually expected as we can see in Matthew 6:6 and it states, “But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.”
As we can see here Jesus is mentioning the words “when you pray” meaning that He is anticipating every one of us to pray. Then He goes a bit further when He states that we are to pray in the secret place. That denotes intimacy with our Heavenly Father where you have put time aside specifically for Him.
The Lord knew that we might struggle a bit in this area regarding how we should pray and so He gave us the Model Prayer. This was a breakdown of the key points that we needed to make sure were included in how we are to pray to our Father. This Model prayer is found in Matthew 6:9-13, I have posted it down below.
Matthew 6:9-13
“In this manner, therefore, pray:
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
10 Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”
When we take a look at these passages of Scripture we can determine that what Jesus was giving us is an outline on how we should pray. It wasn’t necessarily meant to be used repetitiously but more so of a guideline on how to pray powerfully. Take the time to understand the entire prayer piece by piece so that you can have more clarity on the important things to incorporate during your prayer time.
The Lord does frown upon vain repetitious words said through prayer that people do just to draw attention to themselves. Matthew 6:7 details, “And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.” In this passage of Scripture Jesus Himself is speaking out against pointless repetitive words. The Lord’s Prayer is different because it falls into the category of meaningful repetition meaning that there is significance behind the words being said. However, it is important to understand the details within the prayer itself.
One of the greatest misconceptions is that we don’t really need to pray because God’s will on Earth will be done regardless. That is very far from the truth in fact the Lord has given every one of us free will. He created us to have the ability to make choices on our own without being forced into anything.
That is why prayer is vital because what it does is invites the Lord to implement His will without violating our own free will. God will never go against His Word and in fact places it above His own Name, Psalm 138:2. So when He gave us dominion over the Earth, that is exactly what He meant.
Let’s take a look at the second part of the Lord’s Model Prayer found in the book of Matthew.
Matthew 6:10
“Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
The word “kingdom” being used here is the Greek word “basileia” which means: to be established, the perfect order of things which He was about to establish in which all those of every nation who should believe in Him were gathered together into one society, dedicated and intimately united to God, and made partakers of eternal salvation.
The word “will” being used is the Greek word “thelēma” which means: the will and choice of God. So when we break down these two key words within the Scripture we can conclude that the Lord’s kingdom: the ones that are united to God and those that believe in Jesus Christ and are partakers of eternal salvation should want to have the Lord’s will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.
We know that Jesus Christ is the Word made flesh that came down to earth and dwelt among us, John 1:14. Anything that is in the Scriptures leads back to the Lord in one way or another. When we read our Bible, it is as if God is speaking to us directly. He is letting us know the way that we are to live our lives as believers of Jesus Christ.
The Word of God also gives us details regarding the role that we play when it comes to the Lord’s will being implemented in the World. The fact is that we play a huge factor when it comes to advancing the Lord’s Kingdom on Earth and we can see that revealed in different passages of Scripture throughout the Bible.
For example Psalm 8:4-6 is filled with information as it discloses, “What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him? For You have made him a little lower than the angels, and you have crowned him with glory and honor. You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet.”
Here we can see that David is giving us some key information regarding our dominion on the Earth. He is also disclosing to us that the Lord has given us power over the works of His hands meaning the things in the World that were created. The best part of the verses of Scripture is when David states that all things are under our feet. That includes Satan and his entire demonic kingdom!
The Lord stated it was finished on the Cross at Calvary and was seated at the right hand of God, Psalm 110:1. He left us with His Word (Joshua 1:8) which was a guideline on how to live and He also left us with His Holy Spirit (John 16:13) guiding us into absolute Truth. Our role is to take what He gave us in His Word and through the power of the Holy Spirit and command God’s will to be done on the Earth like it is in Heaven.
What does commanding God’s will to be done mean?
In order to fully understand what commanding God’s will means we first have to have an understanding of what God’s will is. There are some passages of Scripture that give us more information regarding the Lord’s will.
Romans 12:1-2 details, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
Here we can see that the Apostle Paul is letting us know that the perfect will of God is for us to be able to present our bodies holy and acceptable before Him. Then he lets us know how we can make that happen, “by the renewing of your mind.” The way that we renew our minds is by reading, digesting, and meditating on the Word of God.
The Lord makes us aware of His will for us through the Scriptures and that is why it is crucial that you study to show yourself approved, 2 Timothy 2:15. Another place that God gives us revelation of the power of His Word is found in Isaiah 55:11 and it states, “So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.”
The Lord is making is abundantly clear that every Word that He has given us will not go back to Him void but it will accomplish (produce or bring about) and prosper (to make prosperous) in the thing that the Lord meant for that Word. Every Scripture that is in our Bibles has meaning behind it and they give us a guideline regarding different aspects of our lives. We have to do our part to make sure that we are properly applying the Scriptures daily.
Two other verses that give us an understanding of God’s will for mankind is found in 2 Timothy 3:16-17. They state, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” Every word that came out of the Lord’s mouth is given to us for a reason.
Our goal is to study the Scriptures so that we can have a clear understanding of the messages that the Lord is trying to convey. For example Matthew 28:19-20 is clear and it states, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.”
The most important thing that we can do is first get saved and give our lives to Jesus Christ. The second most important task that we have is to bring others to the knowledge of the Gospel of Jesus Christ making as many disciples along the way as we possibly can!
Notice how the last verse in these passages of Scripture dictate that we are to teach others what God has commanded. That is why it is imperative that we first understand the Scriptures for ourselves. Studying to show ourselves approved to God, rightly dividing His Truth, 2 Timothy 2:15.
Conclusion
The Lord’s Model Prayer is our guideline to praying effectively. Praying the words themselves is powerful but you want to understand what God is conveying within the prayer itself. The second part of the Lord’s Model Prayer is vital because it lets us know that God wants His will on Earth to be done just as it is in Heaven.
That is why it is critical that we have a clear understanding of Scripture and the important details that the Lord provides us within them! God’s Word will convict, correct, equip, and also instruct. In other words it will give us instructions on the best way to live a successful life as a believer of Jesus Christ. If God has spoken it He will make it come to pass and it will always be for our good, Numbers 23:19.
