The Power of Repentance-It Closes the Door to the Enemy

One thing that needs to be established from the beginning is the fact that there is a powerful adversary against every single one of us that wants to kill, steal, and destroy our lives, John 10:10. Whether you are a believer or a non-believer it will not negate the truth of his existence. He wants to entangle you in his wicked schemes so that he can keep you in bondage.

He uses demonic spirits to try to temp you, influence you, and persuade you in every area of your life to get you to come into agreement with their demonic devices. They know that once you engage in the iniquity that they are enticing you with, they have legal rights to oppress you and they most definitely will, Psalm 94:20.

One thing we need to realize is that because of the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, he is a defeated foe. The Lord disarmed and triumphed over the devil and all evil spirits making a public spectacle of them openly, Colossians 2:14-15. The power in Jesus’ Name gives you the authority to bind the demonic attacks of the enemy and live a life free from the chains that he will attempt to put you in!

You are in a spiritual battle whether you want to believe it or not. That is why the Apostle Paul tells us “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

There is a kingdom of darkness (Satan’s kingdom) and a kingdom of light (God’s Kingdom) battling daily for your soul. God’s kingdom promises us life eternally with Jesus Christ (John 3:36) while the other one promises us eternal hell in the lake of fire, Revelation 20:15.

There are many doors that can be opened to the demonic realm that allow evil spiritual forces to develop demonic strongholds over you that can be very hard to break. The spiritual realm is governed by spiritual laws established by the Lord that both kingdoms (the kingdom of light and the kingdom of darkness) have to abide by, 1 John 3:4. We have to make sure that we don’t become susceptible to the devil’s devices and the way that we do that is by knowing what they are and staying clear from them.

The first step is to repent and refrain from practicing all willful sin. What that will do is close the doors that have been opened up to the enemy because it takes away the legal right that the devil has to wreak havoc in your life. We are all imperfect people serving a perfect God. Romans 3:23 states “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

The difference is that when you become a believer of the Lord Jesus Christ, you receive the free gift of the Holy Spirit that dwells inside of you, John 14:17. He is your Helper that will guide you into all Truth, John 16:13. The Spirit of God will steer you in the right direction when you are veering off track pertaining to how the Word of God says one should live their lives.

Remember 2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” That means that you do not have to be a salve to sin but have the ability through Christ and what He did for us on the cross to live a life free from captivity at the hand of the enemy.

It will mean you taking a step back and being honest with yourself; are you engaging in things that are going to have eternal repercussions? If so, ask yourself is it really worth it? Making the choice to repent and turn away from your sin filled lifestyle is a decision that you will have to make followed by actions to back up your decision. There is power in repentance but you have to be willing to make the sacrifice to die to the old you and live your life for Jesus Christ.

Most Common Open Doors to the Enemy

Willful sin:

This includes sins such as: adultery, idolatry, fornication, drunkenness, murder, and sorcery just to name a few. There are also sins of the heart that open the door to the devil to come into your life and wreak havoc. Some examples of those particular sins include: unforgiveness, lust, pride, envy, jealousy, anger, bitterness, etc.

Sin is sin and they will have eternal consequences if your sin goes on without repentance. Mark 8:36 details, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Your soul is everlasting and the fact is that you are the only one that can make the choice of where it will end up when you take your last breath. That is truly how serious it is!

Unforgiveness:

Unforgiveness is in its own category and so many people are bound by the chains of the enemy simply because they cannot forgive someone that has hurt them. Unfortunately what that does is open the door to the devil and his demons to have the legal right to create chaos in your life, Matthew 18:33-35. If you do not forgive from your heart and allow the Lord to take the vengeance in His own hands, the enemy has the lawful right to come against you.

God is very clear when He states in Romans 12:19 “Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.” I know it’s difficult to let some of the things that others have done to us go, but the Lord is letting us know that He will take care of it and we have to be able to trust Him enough to believe that He will! He has a way to repay the people that have harmed you in such a way that they will truly regret it.

Occult involvement:

This one opens the doors to some high level and powerful demons. This type of warfare is on a whole different level because of the doors that you are opening up knowingly or unknowingly to the devil and his demons. This is the one that I got myself entangled in ignorantly. The Lord is plain when He states that we are not to be ignorant of the devil’s devices, 2 Corinthians 2:11. I became a victim to the traps of the devil and it took me almost 4 years to get out of it.

What I got involved in was Psychic Mediums, Chakra Meditation, and Reiki Healing. There are a list of things that you can get yourself mixed up in that you need to stay away from because that level of demon will make your life a living nightmare. Some of the things that you can do that will invite demons into your life almost automatically are:

Anything having to do with Psychics, palm reading, astrology, tarot card readings, new age practices, yoga practices, white magic, black magic, sorcery, sage, salt on the corners of your house, crystals, fraternities, sororities, free masonry, secret societies, angel card reading, horoscope reading, going to spiritual healers (Shamans).

Santeria, Voodoo, any form of witch craft, Ouija boards, anything associated with divination including books, movies, etc. these are just a few. I would ask the Holy Spirit to give you discernment on if there is something that you are doing or that is in your house that is opening the door to the devil so that you can get rid of it! Remember the word occult literally means “hidden” or “secret.”

Generational curses:

Before we go deeper into this particular one let’s first take a look at some passages of Scripture that give us some more detail regarding generational curses. Exodus 20:5 details, “you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me.”

Exodus 34:7 reveals, “Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.” Another passage of Scripture is found in Deuteronomy 5:9 declares, “you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me.”

Here are some examples of verses that give us an idea of the Lord visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation. Then the Lord gives us some vital information when he states those that “hate Me.” If you are not a believer of Jesus Christ then you won’t have the ability and power in Christ to overcome and dismantle generational curses in your life.

Let’s take a look at some New Testament Scriptures regarding generational curses. Galatians 3:13 details, “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”). The words “has redeemed” is the Greek word “exagorazō” which means: by payment of a price to recover from the power of another.

What we can determine by this passage is that the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ paid the price to take back the power from the enemy regarding curses. That doesn’t mean that generational curses will just disappear the moment that you become a Christian, you have to remove the legal right that the curse has on your life.

The final passage of Scripture that I wanted to highlight gives us insight on generational curses is found in Revelation 22:3. It states, “And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him.” The Lord is making it clear to us that curses will not be completely done away with until the millennial reign.

Conclusion

Repentance closes the door to the enemy and prevents him from having the legal right to wreak havoc in your life. There are many doors that you can open that will invite the devil to come right on in. I have listed several but if you are not sure if what you are practicing or what you have in your house is leading to open doors ask the Holy Spirit to let you know and He will.

It is so important that you understand how the devil and his kingdom operate so that you can stay away from his devices. One of the main ways that he infiltrates your space is willful sin. Repentance is a huge part of closing doors to the enemy but you also want to make sure that you are reading your Word studying it, digesting it, and applying it to your daily life.
