Tips for walking in Good Health-Choose Life!

Deuteronomy 30:15

“See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil.”

In this Old Testament passage of Scripture out of the book of Deuteronomy written by Moses we can see that God is giving us a choice. The choices are between good which is the equivalent of having life or choosing evil which is the equivalent of death. One thing that we know for sure is that the Lord gives us the free will to make our own decisions. He does however give us the consequences for the choices that we make.

Let’s take a closer look at the passage of Scripture that I am highlighting out of Deuteronomy. The word “life” being used is the Hebrew word ḥay which means: as consisting of earthly felicity combined (often) with spiritual blessedness. The word “good” being used is the Hebrew word ṭôḇ which means: moral good.

The word “death” being used is the Hebrew word māveṯwhich means: death opposed to life. The word “evil” being used is the Hebrew word raʿ which means: ethical evil. So when we dissect these four key words being used in the passage of Scripture we can see a direct contrast with the two choices that God is giving us.

One of the choices that we can make is to live a life of happiness and joy but that is dependent upon us living morally good and spiritually pure. Or, we can live our lives opposing life because we are choosing to live ethically sinful. God never makes us do anything but His Word is extremely clear on the ramifications for our actions.

Romans 6:23 describes it perfectly when the Apostle Paul states, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This New Testament passage of Scripture is revealing to us the spiritual and natural consequence to living a life disobeying God’s Word, God’s commandments, and God’s laws and that is premature and spiritual death. That is why walking in good health means that you are choosing to live and not die.

You have to be willing to live your Christian life obedient to the stipulations that God has mandated in His Word. The will of God is that none of us would perish but that we would all come to repentance, 2 Peter 3:9. The most important decision that you will ever make pertaining to living a good life of great health is to read the Holy Bible, study it, and apply it to your daily life.

I have some articles that go into detail on the dangers of willful sin: Spiritual Oppression: The dangers of open doors to the enemy-Part 1 and  Hindrances to your healing-Willful Sin.

The verses after the primary passage of Scripture that I am highlighting give us some vital information. Deuteronomy 30:16 details, “in that I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments, that you may live and multiply; and the Lord your God will bless you in the land which you go to possess.”

God is revealing to us the stipulations and requirements for us living a long life: we must love the Lord, walk in God’s ways, and keep his rules and regulations. Then the Lord tells us that if we are able to remain obedient and follow the guidelines that He has set in place for us, we will live and multiply. This includes having a healthy and successful life.

Then the Lord gives us the consequences for living a life of death because of sin and idolatry. Deuteronomy 30:17-18 depicts, “But if your heart turns away so that you do not hear, and are drawn away, and worship other gods and serve them, I announce to you today that you shall surely perish; you shall not prolong your days in the land which you cross over the Jordan to go in and possess.”

We can see the exact opposite effect happen as a result of sin and idolatry which is the fact that your days will not be long on the Earth. Here we can plainly perceive that the decisions that we make in our day to day life will have a direct effect on our overall health. A lot of times people don’t see the correlation with their sickness and sin, but the Word of God tells us otherwise.

Walking in good health means that you are making the decision to choose your life over the desires of this world that lead to death. God’s blessings are meant for His children including the length of days that you live on Earth and eternal life with Him in heaven. The fact of the matter is that in order for us to truly walk in the Blessings that God has for us we have to abide by the stipulations that He is giving us in His Word.

Deuteronomy 30:19

“I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live.”

In this verse of Scripture we can determine that the Lord is giving us the choice between life which equals blessings or death which results in curses. Then He tells us what choice He wants us to make and that is to choose life. One of the key things that I want to point out in this passage of Scripture written in Old Testament times is the fact that our current decisions directly affect our future generation whether we want to believe it or not.

God is definitive when He reveals, “therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live.” Make no mistake about it, the things that you do during your lifetime will trickle down to your third and fourth generations. This is important to know because your decisions can either bring forth blessings or curses for your entire bloodline.

Often times your ancestor’s choices is impacting your health and you don’t even realize it.  Numbers 14:18 details plainly, “The Lord is longsuffering and abundant in mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He by no means clears the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation.”

The devil is not just after you but he is after your children and their children and their children. He wants to take as many people with him to eternal damnation as he possibly can. We have to gain the understanding that spiritual warfare is an everyday reality and we need to know how the enemy operates so that we are not ignorant of his devices, 1 Peter 5:8. That is why it is important that we spend time in God’s Word sharpening our Sword daily.

The love of God is absolute and He wishes that not one of His children suffer and that is why He is abundantly clear in His Word about repercussions. In Numbers 14:18 He is revealing to us that He is forgiving and longsuffering for those that have a repentant heart but He also lets us know that He will visit the guilty (the ones that don’t repent) to the third and fourth generation.

This is imperative for us to clearly understand because you can set your future generations of children to the fourth generation up for success or failure based on your actions. God is love but He is also a Judge that is just in the way that He judges His children. The wages of our sin will always result in premature death in some way, Romans 6:23.

Making the choice to live means that you are willing to change your entire frame of mind, Romans 12:2. It means that you will submit your entire life to Jesus Christ and allow the Holy Spirit to lead you and guide you into all truth, John 16:13. It means that you say goodbye to living your life your own way because you are a believer in the Kingdom of God and you have to live accordingly.

It is in our human nature to want to live our lives satisfying our fleshly desires but if you want to live the life that God intended for you to have, you have to follow God’s ways which is the Biblical Law found in His Word. The children of Israel had to continue learning this lesson the hard way. You don’t want that to be you!

I would definitely suggest reading the entire chapter 28 found in the book of Deuteronomy because it is vital to understanding the choices and repercussions of the decisions that we make as believers of Jesus Christ.

Conclusion

There are some tips that you can follow that help you walk in good health. One of these tips is to choose life. Or in other words choose to live your life upright abiding by the rules and regulations commanded in God’s Word. The Lord has given us every single tool that we need to overcome premature death but the problem is that a lot of us do not read the Word of God.

The Lord is very clear when He tells us that we are not to be ignorant of the devil’s devices and that includes the afflictions of sickness and disease. If we are not 100 percent it is very difficult to progress in the Kingdom of God and the enemy knows it! God wants us to stay ready in season and out of season 2 Timothy 4:2.
