Who wrote Proverbs 31?
Proverbs 31 is one of the most powerful Proverbs out of the entire book of Proverbs. Most of Proverbs was written by King Solomon, the son of David, one of the wisest kings to ever live in his time. However the author of Proverbs 31 is said to have been written by King Lemuel or King of Massa. The name Lemuel means “for God” or “belonging to God.”
Not too much is said in the Holy Scriptures in either the Old Testament or the New Testament about this particular unknown King. What we can see from God’s Word is that the words of King Lemuel were given to him by his mother whom remains unnamed. King Lemuel’s mother gave him some good advice, Godly wisdom, and wise sayings pertaining to a good woman of Godly character.
Some scholars believe that Lemuel is another name for King Solomon which meant that the advice that he was given was from Solomon’s mother Bathsheba. The Lord’s Word is not definitive when it comes to who Lemuel actually is. So, we can’t say for sure but what we do know is that every word written by him was inspired by the Holy Spirit, 2 Timothy 3:16.
The words of Lemuel that are written give us a description of a virtuous woman or virtuous wife. This is extremely beneficial for every Christian woman single or married wanting to be a wife of noble character. Every passage of Scripture out of the entire chapter is filled with good examples of how the Lord expects a woman to live for her husband as well as having a fear of the Lord.
What tends to be common nowadays are women and men getting married for the wrong reasons. The person that you decide to spend the rest of your life with is such a significant decision that you most definitely want to seek the Lord Jesus Christ about. You want to make sure that who you are marrying is the right person for you.
A great woman is not just an ordinary woman as we see in Proverbs 31:10 when it states, “Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies.” In this passage of Scripture we can see that the kind of woman that is being described is a person that is really hard to find, a rare stone like a ruby that requires work to discover.
Some powerful examples out of the Proverbs 31 are:
Proverbs 31:12 “She does him good and not evil all the days of her life.”
Proverbs 31:26 “She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness.”
Proverbs 31:29 “Many daughters have done well, but you excel them all.”
Proverbs 31:30 “Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.”
Proverbs 31:31 “Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates.”
We can perceive that a person that is classified as a virtuous woman is held to a high standard. She wants to be the kind of woman that is choosy, selective, and searching for a man that has the fear of God in him. She doesn’t want to just choose someone based solely on outside appearances. The fact of the matter is that a person can be beautiful or handsome on the outside but their heart is as wicked as they come.
Dissecting this chapter will give you an idea of what the Lord expects from a Godly woman that puts the Lord before any and everything else. Make it a point to study this chapter as well as the Proverbs of Solomon as they give us significant information on how to live a victorious life for Jesus Christ!
