Your Inheritance through Christ-Freedom from Sin
In order to understand how we receive freedom from sin we need to understand how it entered into the World to begin with. Genesis 3:3 details, “but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ”
God gave a direct commandment not to eat of the tree or they would die and Adam and Eve blatantly disobeyed. This did not mean a physical death but a spiritual one. Not only did they die spiritually, this introduced sin into the world which in turn introduced premature death. Genesis 6:3 makes it clear when the Lord states, “And the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”
Before our lifespan was cut short people lived for hundreds of years, Methuselah was 969 years old when he died, Genesis 5:27. What created this significant change? The wages of sin is death and there is no getting around that fact, Romans 6:23. The sin that Adam and Eve committed solidified the fact that every other person that was born from that moment on was born with the sin nature with the proclivity to sin.
The sacrificial atonement which was the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ took away the power of sin and gave us the opportunity at eternal life. He conquered ever scheme that the devil threw at him including the attempt to entice Him to sin. The Word of God discloses this disarmament and how the Lord overcame the devil and his entire kingdom.
Colossians 2:14-15 reveals, “having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.” The sacrifice that Jesus made for us on the cross wiped away our entire sin debt in full.
Not only did He pay our penalty for us but His death also provided us with the free gift of the Holy Spirit. He is our Helper (John 14:26) and the One that will guide us into absolute truth, John 16:13. He will give you the power to overcome temptation, sin, the desires of you flesh, and your carnal mind.
The fact of the matter is that our Lord diminished the potency of sin but He did not remove it completely. That is why it is so important that we renew our minds (Romans 12:2) and die to our old self daily. Renewing your mind through the Word of God will help you fight off the attacks of the devil when he tries to shoot fiery arrows at your mind.
We can never forget the fact that Jesus Christ Himself fought the enemy with the Word of God as He stated “It is written” how much more do we need to do the same. We gained an inheritance and part of our inheritance is freedom from sin but we still have to do our part.
Let’s take a closer look at the passage of Scripture that discloses our freedom from the bondage of sin.
Romans 6:18
“And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.”
The Apostle Paul is making it definitively clear to us that in order to ensure your freedom from the spirit of slavery which is sin and death, you must become a slave to righteousness. The words “you became slaves” being used is the Greek word “douloō” which means: give myself wholly to one’s needs and service, make myself a bondman to him.
One thing that we need to make sure that we never overlook is the fact that the wages of sin is death, Romans 6:23. That is why it is so important that we live a life of righteousness striving to be better every single day pressing towards our goal of one day living eternally with our Lord and Savior. We are heirs of God and that is not something that we should ever take for granted.
The will of God for every one of us is that none should perish but that we would all live eternal lives, 2 Peter 3:9. Unfortunately a lot of Christians do not read the Holy Bible much less live by it. God is definitely clear when He states in 1 Peter 1:16 “because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.” Also in John 14:15, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.”
We can clearly determine that the Lord does not want us to get saved and live our lives the same way. The transformative power of the Holy Spirit should be pushing you to live holy and keep God’s commandments, but only if you allow Him to. He is a dove and a Gentleman and will not force His will upon you or me.
The reality is that we should have such a reverence, love, and respect for our Heavenly Father that we would not want to do anything that grieves Him. The unfortunate thing is that a lot of people including most Christians just call on Him when they need something. They don’t spend time with Him other than a Sunday afternoon at church and they fail to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
You don’t want to fall into that category, ask yourself these questions: if I never opened my mouth would the people around me know that I was a Christian? Does the way that I talk, the way that I dress, the way that I act, and my character reflect the image of Christ? Am I shining the light of Jesus or do I contribute to the darkness already in the World?
These are questions that you really want to answer honestly. Time is too short not to know whether or not you are truly saved living your life for Jesus Christ. Don’t be a lukewarm Christian that the Lord is forced to say to you “I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’” Matthew 7:23.
Conclusion
One of the major problems that people faced throughout the entire Word of God was sin. Jesus Christ died on the cross at Calvary which paid the sin debt for the entire World. Part of our inheritance that we have been fortunate enough to receive is freedom from sin.
The Lord took away the potency that sin had over us but He did not take sin away completely. We have to do our part and put on the entire Armor of God and fight against the snares and the wiles of the devil. We have been provided with all of the tools that we need to ensure victory over this already defeated foe but we have to get into the Word of God and sharpen our Sword daily.
