Your Inheritance through Christ-There is no Condemnation
There is one thing that we need to completely understand and that is that the love of Christ put Him on the Cross at Calvary for the sin of the World. What that did was give us the free gift of Salvation and eternal life which in turn allows us to gain an inheritance as heirs of God. What does it actually mean when the Lord states that we are co-heirs with Christ?
The perfect passages of Scripture that disclose exactly what the Lord means by inheritance are found in Romans 8:16-17. It states, “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.”
So what these verses are telling us is that because of the atoning sacrificial work of Jesus Christ which was: His death, burial, and resurrection on the cross at Calvary we have been given an inheritance as co-heirs with Him. One of the main parts of our inheritance is that there is no more condemnation to those that are children of God.
In order to fully understand what is meant by no more condemnation let’s take a look at what the Apostle Paul has to say about our human nature, carnal mind, and how sin can still affect our daily lives.
Romans 7:14-17 out of the book or Romans discloses, “For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin. For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good. But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.”
Here we can see that Paul is classifying himself as a carnal man dealing with the power of sin in is life. Make no mistake about it, the enemy knows your every weakness and will apply pressure to all of those areas that you have not crucified. The Apostle Paul is disclosing this very struggle stating that when he wants to do good, he still finds himself messing up.
The good news is that our Lord Jesus Christ weakened the effect that sin had over the life of a believer. Your new nature in Christ allows you to leave old things behind and make all things new, 2 Corinthians 5:17. This includes all your previous sin that you once committed.
Paul dives deeper into the topic pertaining to things of the flesh working against the things of the spirit when he unveils this truth a little further in Romans 7:24-25. It states, “O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!
So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.” We can see in these New Testament passages that Paul is addressing the fact that we are born with the sin nature already inside of our bodies and calls it a body of death. Why? The wages of sin is death, Romans 6:23. Then he makes a powerful statement: “I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!”
We no longer have to be a slave to the sin that we used to be in before we came to Christ. The Lord died for us to have the ability to live a life free from the spirit of bondage that tries to hold us captive. The devil will try to remind you of where you came from so that you will feel like you can’t break free or that the Lord can’t use you mightily in His Kingdom. The devil is a liar!
God’s grace says otherwise! When you become a believer of Jesus Christ, God no longer sees your sin but He sees the image of His Son in you. We are His children: daughters and sons of God. We are far from perfect but the goal is to try to live your life following the righteous requirements of the law found in the Holy Bible. We don’t have to let the devil make us feel like our sins haven’t been washed clean by the blood of Jesus!
Let’s take a look at the passage of Scripture that breaks down the fact that there is no condemnation to those that are in Christ Jesus.
Romans 8:1
“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.”
Paul’s letter to the Romans was extremely powerful and this particular passage lets us know that we don’t have to feel shame and guilt for the way that we use to live our lives before we came to know Jesus Christ. The word “condemnation” being used is the Greek word “katakrima” which means: damnatory sentence (or eternal punishment in hell).
What the devil will do is continuously bring up your past sins and throw them in your face. If you are not casting down those thoughts that are contrary to the Word of God, those thoughts will begin to oppress you and build strongholds in your mind. That is not the will of God for your life. Jesus died to set us free not to keep us bound.
That is why this passage out of the book of Romans is so significant because it tells us definitively that there is no condemnation to those that are in Christ. So if you are hearing thoughts of criticism, blame, and shame you know that they are not from God.
In your Christian life you will fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23) but the work of the Spirit of God and the Power of God give you the strength to overcome sin and temptation. We are still responsible for abiding by God’s law and taking accountability for our own actions. That is why it is vital that you follow the leading of the Holy Spirit because He will lead you into all truth, John 16:13.
The second part of the primary passage of Scripture that I am highlighting in Romans 8:1 reveals to us the key to ensure that you are following the things of God. It states, “…who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.” In other words the primary way to avoid the condemnation driven by the enemy is if you are continually walking according to the Holy Spirit.
If you are walking in your flesh: doing what you want to do without feeling convicted, living your life in habitual sin, and not caring about God’s plan for your life then you can expect to feel condemnation. The devil will use every open door that you give him to wreak havoc in your life including oppressive thoughts of your past transgressions.
The Lord will approach your mess ups in a different way and that is with correction and love. Hebrews 12:6 makes it clear as it reveals, “For whom the Lord loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives.” The words “He chastens” being used is the Greek word “paideuō” which means: of a father punishing his son.
Just like your Earthly father will punish you and correct you when you get out of line, your Heavenly Father does the same thing. It feels much different to get correction form the Father versus condemnation from the devil. You can see the chastening of God on His children throughout the entire Bible. His goal is to align us back to His Word so that we can stay out of harm’s way.
Conclusion
One of the greatest weapons that the enemy uses on believers of Jesus Christ is condemnation. If he can make you think that your past transgressions will prevent you from moving forward in God’s Kingdom he will. What that does is keep you bound and oppressed by the thoughts that he keeps feeding you.
Jesus died so that we would no longer be slaves to sin or the effects of sin. This is part of our inheritance as believers of Jesus Christ. The problem is a lot of Christians do not build their spirit focusing on the things of the Lord. This makes it easy to walk in the flesh and not of the Spirit of God making you a prime target for the enemy to plant seeds of condemnation in your mind.
