Psalm 91-God’s Protective Prayer-Part 5

Psalm 91 is one of the most powerful protective prayers in the entire Word of God! It covers every kind of scenario that you will ever face including: the snares of the fowler, perilous pestilence, the terror by night, and all destruction. It is vital that you get these passages of Scripture deep down in your heart and mind. That way, when tribulation hits you will have them ready to use regardless of the circumstance.

The Holy Spirit will bring them to your remembrance but you have to have them already in your Scriptural memory bank for Him to pull from. Remember, the more of God’s Word that you have embedded in your heart the more artillery that you will have at your disposal. The Lord has provided us with His Word which gives us the tools and weapons that we need to live victorious lives as believers of Jesus Christ. It is then up to us to take the time to read the Bible, study it, and apply it to our daily lives.

We are living in a time where the enemy is not even hiding anymore and is on a prowl searching for who he can devour, 1 Peter 5:8. That is why Psalm 91 is such a powerful chapter out of God’s Word because it guarantees the Lord’s hand of protection over our lives. Let it be one of the first prayers that you pray over yourself and your family the moment that you wake up every morning.

So far, I have gone over Psalm 91:1-8. If you have not read those articles yet, please go back and read them as they have some key information in them. I will also list them here: Psalm 91-God’s Protective Prayer-Part 1Psalm 91-God’s Protective Prayer-Part 2, and Psalm 91-God’s Protective Prayer-Part 3, and Psalm 91-God’s Protective Prayer-Part 4.

I am going to go over some more of God’s promises found in this amazing Psalm.

Psalm 91:9

“Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, even the Most High, your dwelling place.”

The Lord has added another incredible promise for those that are fulfilling the stipulations found in Psalm 91:1 which are: to dwell in the secret place of the most High and to abide in the shadow of the Almighty. He is disclosing to us the result of what happens when you adhere to His Word. The Lord reiterates what He expressed in the beginning of this Psalm regarding dwelling in the secret place.

This is a clear indication of how significant it is that we spend time with the Lord and not just at church on a Sunday afternoon. Another word for dwell means to “lodge” or “remain” which denotes time being spent. God wants to have an intimate relationship with every one of us. He is our Heavenly Father that loves us more than we will ever know. He wants us to become so connected to Him that we literally become a part of His shadow.

He knows that being so close to Him will allow us to be under His umbrella of protection from everything or anything that will ever try to cause you harm. It really boils down to whether or not we want to put in the time and effort that it is going to take to have a genuine relationship with the Lord. One of the main ways that you can learn about God is through His Word.

Your Bible provides you with God’s characteristics, His rules and stipulations, tactics to defeat the enemy, the guideline on how He wants you to live your life as a believer of Jesus Christ, and so much more! God makes it clear that we are destroyed because of a lack of knowledge, Hosea 4:6. That knowledge that God is referring to is His Word, it is literally the bread of life!

Now let’s take a closer look at the passage of Scripture that I am highlighting Psalm 91:9. The words “my refuge” being used is the Hebrew word maḥăsê which means: refuge from rain, storm, and danger. The words “the Most High” being used here is the Hebrew word ʿelyôn which means: Highest, Most High. The words “your dwelling place” being used is the Hebrew word māʿôn which means: dwelling, habitation.

When we break down these key words out of this passage of Scripture we can see that the Lord is giving us the result of those that make Him their shelter. The protective covering that He is mentioning is from rain, storm, and danger. Then the writer of the Psalm mentions God being the Most High or Highest. Picture a shelter higher than all the tribulation, all the trials, and all the storms of life. That is the kind of covering that the Lord provides His children.

The NIV version of this verse of Scripture states, “If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling.” This version allows us to see that there is a choice being given, God is saying that “if” you say that He is your refuge meaning that we have to make that decision on our own. It doesn’t happen by itself, we have to be willing to establish an intimate relationship with the Lord making Him our dwelling place.

Once again, God reiterates what He said in Psalm 91:1 about dwelling in the secret place. Those that remain and stand in His covering or hiding place (prayer closet) are the ones that will be safely protected when the storms hit. The Lord also makes it clear that in order for someone to receive this type of shelter you have to stay in His shadow which requires familiarity.

Abiding in God’s presence means that you have a relationship with Him, you are obedient to His Word, making Him your first line of defense and not your last option, you are spending dedicated moments with Him in prayer, worship, and most of all reading His Word.

Now let’s take a look at another incredible promise that God is giving us regarding His protection.

Psalm 91:10

“No evil shall befall you, nor shall any plague come near your dwelling.”

God is so faithful and such a good Father that not only is He providing us with His protective covering but He is allowing that shelter to cover our entire household. What an amazing promise that we can stand on should we choose to abide by the stipulations attached to it. It is so important that we have a clear understanding of Psalm 91 in its entirety so that we don’t miss out on any assurances that the Lord is providing for us.

When you are a Christian, you hold a level of protection for you and your family. You have the authority through the Name of Jesus to pray over your house, yourself, your spouse, and your children. You have the authority over all the power of the devil and his demonic kingdom, Luke 10:19. Make it a point to pray and pray often, anoint your home, pray in tongues all through your house, and let worship music play throughout the day. Set an atmosphere that the enemy wants no part of!

Psalm 91 is a prayer that I pray every single morning that I wake up covering my entire household. I feel like the Lord has really been impressing upon me to get a hold of this Psalm and get it deep down in my spirit and you should definitely do the same. It is God’s Powerful Protective Prayer that He has provided for us to use as a shelter against the adversities that we will face.

Now let’s take a closer look at this passage of Scripture that I am highlighting Psalm 91:10. The word “evil” being used is the Hebrew word raʿ which means: bad, evil, wicked (ethically). The word “befall” being used here is the Hebrew word ‘ānâ which means: to be sent, be allowed to meet, encounter, approach.

The words “any plague” being used is the Hebrew word neḡaʿ which means: stroke plague, or mark. The words “your dwelling” being used here is the Hebrew word ‘ōhel which means: tent, home, habitation, and dwelling.

So when we piece all of these key words together we can see the message that the psalmist is giving to us. God is assuring His children that no wickedness, evil, plague or disease will have the ability to approach you or your entire household. What an amazing promise!  By you following and abiding by God’s stipulations found in Psalm 91:1 you are guaranteed protection for you and your entire family! It doesn’t get any better than that!

Why would anyone not want to take full advantage of the incredible benefits that we are afforded as believers of Jesus Christ? With the things that are going on in the World right now we need to make sure that we get a hold of God’s Word and make it our final authority! We need to take every Scripture found on every page of our Bible at face value and truly apply them to our lives.

Conclusion

Make no mistake about it; Psalm 91 is one of the most powerful protective prayers out of the entire Word of God. It covers any and all adversity that you will ever have to face in life. The Lord gives us all of the tools that we need to battle with and they are all found in your Bible. The unfortunate thing is that a lot of Christians don’t read their Word for themselves but rely on others to do it for them.

This is not going to help you live a victorious life as a believer of Jesus Christ. Whether you realize it or not you are fighting a spiritual battle with a very powerful adversary every single day. His goal is to steal, kill, and destroy you by any means necessary, John 10:10. That is why it is vital that you store up as many weapons (God’s Word) as you can and get them embedded in your heart. You need to get to a place where you stay ready so that you won’t have to get ready!
