Breaking Spiritual Strongholds: Renouncing

What does renouncing mean?

In order to have a full understanding of what the word renounce means, let’s take a look at what the Bible has to say about it. The word renounced is the Greek Word apeipon which means to forbid and give up. Merriam Webster’s definition is: to give up, refuse, or resign usually by formal declaration. In other words you are coming out of agreement with something that is giving the devil and his demonic kingdom a legal right into your life.

We have to remember that life and death is in the power of your tongue, Proverbs 18:21. By you verbally breaking the binding contract that the enemy had over your life, you are breaking his power and attachment to it. It’s you saying that you no longer want to have anything to do with the iniquity that you or your family members were involved in that gave him the legal access into your life.

You are completely detaching yourself from anything that is ungodly. You are divorcing it verbally by renouncing your involvement with it and washing your hands from it. You want to make sure that you have first confessed your sins before the Lord and repented of them with a sincere and repentant heart.

Then you want to completely renounce all attachment to your transgression and the transgressions of your ancestors verbally. What that does is say to the devil you no longer have a foothold or “place” in my life and you need to go! The Word of God tells us if we resist the devil he will flee (James 4:7) but the first part of that Scripture states that we must first submit to God.

Then James breaks it down for us even further James 4:8 states, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” Here we can see that James through the leading of the Holy Spirit is disclosing to us that it is imperative that we cleanse our hands (free from defilement of sin and wickedness) and purify our hearts (purify morally).

This is significant because you turning completely away from your old sinful ways is the first step in ensuring that the enemy loosens his grip. The strongholds that he has created in your mind will not stand a chance against God’s Word, the blood of Jesus, or the Name of Jesus!

I am going to go over some Scriptures that will give you an idea of how the devil and his demonic kingdom form their mischief and how to verbally renounce all attachment to them.

2 Corinthians 4:2

“But we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness nor handling the word of God deceitfully, but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.”

This passage of Scripture out of the New Testament mentions the word renounced. As previously mentioned it is the Greek Word apeipon which means to forbid and give up. The Apostle Paul is making it very plain to us that it is necessary to renounce your unholy agreement to even the hidden things of shame that nobody knows about regardless of how immoral they may be.

Once you begin to read the Word of God and His Biblical laws and regulations are revealed to you through the Spirit of God, there is no excuse. Paul reveals that we are not to handle the Lord’s Word deceitfully (with wrong notions). A true believer of Jesus Christ should want to turn away from evil desires that are going to hinder his or her Christian life.

Renouncing of sin is one of the only ways that you can break the legal right that the enemy has over your life. Never forget that spiritual warfare is an everyday reality and the devil never plays fair. His goal is to steal, kill, and destroy every single one of us by any means necessary, John 10:10. He will use your deliberate sin as an open door to create strongholds and legally wreak havoc in your life.

Our Heavenly Father is absolute love and wishes that nobody should perish but that we all live an eternal life with Him. That is why He left us His Word that includes all of the tools that we need to fight the devil and his kingdom and triumph over them! Unfortunately we die due to a lack of knowledge, Hosea 4:6. I cannot tell you how important it is to get into the Lord’s Word daily, study it, and apply it to your everyday life.

Psalm 94:20

“Shall the throne of iniquity, which devises evil by law, have fellowship with you?”

The psalmist that wrote Psalm 94 is giving us some very detailed and significant information regarding how the devil and his kingdom establish their evil. They are devising their mischief by law. In other words, whether or not we are aware of the Lord’s stipulations and provisions we are held accountable when we break them. When we go against God’s Biblical law, it gives the enemy and every evil spirit the legal right to create chaos in our lives.

That is why the Lord is asking us in this passage of Scripture if we should be living a life that is in direct fellowship with the devil. We were bought at a tremendous price when Jesus Christ died on the cross at Calvary and shed His innocent blood to pay for our sin debt. Should we as Christians be living in the same sin that He died for us to be free from?

Our body is a temple of God that houses the Holy Spirit and we are to keep it as clean and pure as we possibly can. When we begin to pollute it with the filth of the World we are allowing the enemy to legally infiltrate our minds and hearts which will in turn create strongholds that are not easy to break. When we verbally declare that we are coming out of agreement with the devil and his ways and truly mean it, it releases the power that he has over us.

Luckily we have the Helper, the Holy Spirit dwelling on the inside of us that will guide and lead us into all truth, John 16:13. The Word of God has transformative power and will break the chains that the devil has you shackled in. The key thing is that you want to be submitted to the Lord in every aspect of your life. Areas that are not yielded can be used as open doors for the enemy to come in and attack..

Deuteronomy 5:9

“you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me.”

This is another significant Scripture that I want to highlight. It gives us very crucial information regarding strongholds that are established in our lives. Here we can see that the Lord is telling us that those that serve other gods will result in a generational curse visiting generations even down to the third and fourth generation.

Make no mistake about it; this Biblical law is still very active today. The Lord did not do away with it. That is why it is important that when you renounce the sins that you committed, you also want to renounce the sins of your ancestors. Verbally speaking out your disconnection with a covenant that they may have made with the devil will break its legal right in your life.

You can look at your bloodline and see possible generational curses active. For instance:

There’s a family of women and none of them are married.
A family of women and none of them can have children.
A family that is all battling the same disease regardless of how healthy they are.
A family that struggles financially no matter how much money they make.
An appetite to wanting to know about the supernatural and not of the Lord (witchcraft, fortunetelling, tarot cards, psychic readings).

God does not play any type of games when it comes to idol worship or the worship of other gods. He will not share His glory with anyone or anything as He shouldn’t. He is our Heavenly Father, Creator of the World and He deserves all the praise, honor, and glory simply for Who He is!

This World is filled will demonic landmines that the enemy is just waiting to destroy us with. The Word of God and the leading and guiding of the Holy Spirit is what is going to help us avoid those traps. Confession and repentance is extremely important when breaking spiritual strongholds but renouncing your transgressions is as equally important.

We are in a wrestling match fighting against an extremely powerful adversary but we serve a God that is greater than Satan or any demon from hell. We need to use the tools that the Lord gives us in His Word to overcome all the schemes and snares of the devil!

I am going to go down a list of things that you can renounce as a starting point. You also want to ask the Holy Spirit if there are things that you need to renounce that are personal to you.

Renounce

I renounce all lust, perversion, immorality, uncleanliness, impurity, and sexual sin in the Name of Jesus

I renounce all sorcery, witchcraft, divination, occult involvement in the Name of Jesus

I renounce all ungodly soul ties and immoral relationships that I have ever had in the Name of Jesus

I renounce all hatred, anger, resentment, revenge, retaliation, unforgiveness, and bitterness in the Name of Jesus

I forgive every person that has ever hurt me, disappointed me, abandoned me, mistreated me, or rejected me in the Name of Jesus

I renounce all addiction to drugs, alcohol, or any legal or illegal substances that has me bound in the Name of Jesus

I renounce all pride, haughtiness, arrogance, vanity, ego, disobedience, and rebellion in the Name of Jesus

I renounce all envy, jealousy, covetousness in the Name of Jesus

I renounce all fear, doubt, and unbelief in the Name of Jesus

I renounce all selfishness, self-will, self-pity, self-rejection, self-hatred, self-promotion, and thoughts of suicide in the Name of Jesus

I renounce all ungodly thought patterns and belief systems in the Name of Jesus

I renounce all ungodly covenants, oaths, and vows made by myself or my ancestors going back 1000 generations on both sides of my family in the Name of Jesus (I say 1000 because I want to go as far back as possible)

I renounce all ungodly covenants, oaths, and pledges I have made with my lips in the Name of Jesus

I renounce and break all ungodly oaths made by my ancestors to idols, demons, false religions, or ungodly organizations going back 1000 generations on both sides of my family in the Name of Jesus

I renounce and break all covenants with death and hell made by myself or my ancestors going back 1000 generations on both sides of my family in the Name of Jesus

I renounce and break all blood covenants made through blood sacrifices made by myself or my ancestors going back 1000 generations on both sides in the Name of Jesus

I renounce and break all spirit marriages, spirit spouses that would cause incubus and succubus demons to attack my life in the Name of Jesus

I renounce and break all agreements with hell and darkness in the Name of Jesus

I renounce, break, and release myself from all generational curses and iniquities as a result of the sins of my ancestors going back 1000 generations on both sides of my family in the Name of Jesus

I renounce, break, and release myself from all curses of sorcery, witchcraft, and divination in the Name of Jesus

I renounce, break, and release myself from all curses of rebellion and pride in the Name of Jesus

I renounce, break, and release myself from all death and destruction in the Name of Jesus

I renounce, break, and release myself from all curses of sickness and infirmity in the Name of Jesus

I renounce, break, and release myself from every curse of poverty, debt, and lack in the Name of Jesus

I renounce, break, and release myself from the curse of rejection in the Name of Jesus

I renounce, break, and release myself from every curse of double mindedness and schizophrenia in the Name of Jesus

I renounce and break the curse of Jezebel and Ahab in the Name of Jesus

I renounce, break, and release myself from every curse of divorce and separation in the Name of Jesus

I renounce, break, and release myself from every curse of lust and perversion in the Name of Jesus

I renounce, break, and release myself from every curse of confusion and mental illness in the Name of Jesus

I renounce, break, and release myself from every curse of idolatry in the Name of Jesus

I renounce, break, and release myself from every curse of accidents and premature death in the Name of Jesus

I renounce and break every negative word curse spoken against me in the Name of Jesus

I renounce and break every word curse spoken that was self-inflicted in the Name of Jesus

I renounce and break any curse of wandering and a vagabond spirit in the Name of Jesus

I close every single demonic door that I may have opened knowingly and unknowingly that is allowing the enemy to have a legal right to invade my life in the Name of Jesus!

Now, take a moment to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any other area that needs to be renounced and dealt with. A lot of things are personal and everyone’s testimony is not the same. Me personally I had to break and renounce a lot of involvement with divination. I got myself involved with psychic readings and reiki meditation and I needed to renounce my association and agreement to it out loud to break its power over my life.

My renunciation told the devil I am no longer in covenant with your kingdom and what it stands for. You want to make a clear stance as to whose side you are on. Elijah said it perfectly in 1 Kings 18:21 when he states, “How long will you falter between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” But the people answered him not a word.”

Conclusion

The Word of God is clear that life and death is in the power of your tongue, Proverbs 18:21. When you renounce your involvement with anything attached to the enemy, you are verbally breaking the binding contract that the devil had over your life. You are making the statement that you no longer want to have any more part of the sin that you were involved in. You want to break all ties to anything that is giving the enemy legal access into your life!
