Intimacy with God-Builds Trust

What is Intimacy with God?

True intimacy with God is not about “knowing” Who He is. It is about having an intimate relationship with Him through reading His Word, Praying, Praise, Worship, and communication with Him. It is the kind of intimacy with our Lord Jesus Christ where you incorporate Him into your everyday life.

Speaking to Him on Sunday at church and then ignoring Him the rest of the week is not going to work. Your Heavenly Father wants to have a true and authentic relationship with you. Just like you speak to your spouse, your children, your family, and friends; the Lord wants to have a personal relationship with you.

Imagine talking to your spouse or your children once a week and then not saying a word to them every other day. Unfortunately this is the intimate level that a lot of Christians have with the Lord. Every single believer of Jesus Christ has the free Gift of the Holy Spirit living on the inside us. One of His primary roles is to guide us into all truth, John 16:13.

The Spirit of God will help you establish intimate fellowship with the Lord but it will require you spending time with Him. There are a variety of ways that you can grow greater intimacy with God. For instance: take designated time out of every day in God’s Word. Develop your own personal Bible Study where it is just you, the Lord, and His Word. Spend intentional time in God’s presence praying in your Heavenly language.

Developing an intimate relationship with the Lord requires that you are fully submitted to His will for your life with the understanding that you can do nothing without Him. I know there have been many times in my life when I tried to do things within my own strength and it led me down the wrong path every single time. You have to get to a place in your life where you trust God to such an extent that you do not lean on your own understanding, but you allow Him to direct your path. He wants nothing more than the best for every one of us and loves us more than we can even imagine.

When you come to that revelation of God through having a true authentic relationship with Him you will understand that He is absolute love. The problem is that most of us don’t spend enough time with Him to recognize His character or to know the His Spirit. So, you don’t trust His voice when you hear Him speaking because it is unfamiliar to you. This is the case with every relationship whether it is with the Lord, your partner, or close friends.

For example, think back to when you met your spouse for the very first time. You didn’t trust everything he or she said to you just yet. Why? They were a complete stranger and you didn’t know them enough to feel like you could trust every single thing that they had to say. As you spent time with them and truly got to know their character, you began to let your guard down. The same goes with your relationship with our Heavenly Father.

The more time that you spend with Him the more you get to know Him on a much deeper level. The first step to enhancing your intimacy with the Lord is by developing spiritual disciplines: praying in your heavenly language as often as possible, fasting, worshiping God in Spirit and truth, John 4:24.

You will find as you begin to truly develop a deep relationship with the Lord, your level of trust in Who He is will grow tremendously.

I have many articles regarding the importance of your relationship with the Lord: Praise His Name, The Power of PraiseThe importance of Reading Your Bible-Builds Your Faith, and The Importance of Reading Your Bible-Shows us How to Love.

Now, I am going to go over some passages of Scripture that disclose the importance of intimacy with God.

John 15:4-5

“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.”

Here we can see in this passage of Scripture out of the book of John that Jesus Christ is letting us know how important a connection to Him is. The word “abide” being used is the Greek word menō which means: not to depart, not to leave, to continue to be present, to remain.

So we can determine that the Lord is letting us know that we are to remain and stay in His presence continually. This is how an intimate relationship is built; you want to spend as much time with Jesus Christ as you possibly can. Emotional intimacy is developed when you can speak to the Lord just like you would an intimate friend. Remember He already knows your deepest thoughts but He wants to have a two-way conversation with you.

He wants you to be so connected to Him that you begin to bear the fruit of His Spirit, Galatians 5:22-23. The Lord wants you to develop such a level of trust in Him that you let Him guide your choices and the decisions that you make. I can tell you by experience that the best decision that you will ever make is making Jesus Christ the Lord of your life.

Matthew 22:37-38

“Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment.”

In this verse of Scripture out of the book of Matthew we can see that Jesus is saying the great commandment is to love the Lord with your whole being: all of your heart, soul, and mind. In order for a person to love the only true God with this level of depth is to spend set apart and intimate time with Him.

One of the primary ways for you to establish this kind of relationship with the Lord is to meditate on His Word day and night, Joshua 1:8. The Word of God is living and powerful and has the ability to change your entire frame of mind, Romans 12:2. The love of God, the character of God, and the power of God is all revealed in His Word. He has laid everything out for us: Who He is, what He expects from us, how we should live our lives as believers of Jesus Christ.

As you begin to meditate on the Scriptures, God’s promises will begin to bear witness helping you establish trust in Him. You will know first-hand that He is Who He says He is and He means what He says. Numbers 23:19 is very clear when it states, “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?”

In other words God is not like a human being that you are not sure you can depend on. He is 100% trustworthy and reliable and God’s Word can be taken at face value without hesitation. If He has said it, He will do it. The thing is if you don’t read your Word you are not going to know what the Lord is saying. This is one of the greatest devices that the enemy uses: making sure that we perish because of lack of knowledge, Hosea 4:6.

Conclusion

One of the best ways that you can develop trust in the Lord Jesus Christ is by getting to know Him personally for yourself. It isn’t enough to just know of Him or have a relationship with Him through someone else. It is imperative that you develop your own deep intimate relationship with the Lord. One of the most effective ways that you can establish personal intimacy with God is through His Word.

Everything that you need to know about Him is laid out in the Word of God: His will for our lives, every Biblical stipulation and requirement, promises that we can stand on, and Spiritual warfare strategies are all found in the pages of your Bible. That is why it is so important that you spend time in God’s Word, it is literally your daily bread and the guideline for your entire life.
