James 1:6-Have Faith with No Doubt
This particular passage of Scripture was written by James, the half-brother of the Lord Jesus Christ. Leading up to the verse we can see that James is giving advice to his brethren pertaining to the various trials and tribulations that he knew that they were going to face. He discloses that as believers of Christ we should count the trials of many kinds as pure joy because the testing of your faith is what produces endurance, James 1:2.
God’s Word is very clear that the storms of life are going to fall on the believer and the non-believer alike, Matthew 5:45. A lot of times Christians think that once they get saved that they are exempt from tribulation and that is so far from the truth. If anything the warfare intensifies so much more because of the fact that you are now in direct opposition with the devil.
James understood this concept and so he was trying to prepare his fellow brothers and sisters in Christ for the times of trial that they were going to face. One key word of advice that he gives that is so important is: when faced with difficult circumstances we are to ask our Heavenly Father for wisdom and He will give it liberally with no condemnation, James 1:5.
God has the ability to give us the kind of knowledge that we can rely on. If you are a believer of Jesus Christ then you have the Holy Spirit living on the inside of you and He will guide you and lead you into ALL truth giving you clear direction, John 16:13. God’s Word is wisdom and it is imperative that you get into the Holy Bible (your instructions for living victoriously) and read it, study it, digest it, and apply it to your daily life.
The more of God’s Word that you have in your heart and mind, the more Scriptures that the Holy Spirit has to pull from to bring to your remembrance in your time of need, John 14:26. The Lord speaks to us the most through His Word so when you need God’s wisdom open up His Word and see what He is saying about the circumstance that you are facing.
One of the main things to keep in mind pertaining to coming to the Lord asking for wisdom is the fact that the Lord wants us to approach Him with unhesitating faith. This brings us to the passage of Scripture that I am highlighting in the book of James.
James 1:6
“But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.”
The word “faith” being used here is the Greek word “pistis” which means: trust (or confidence) whether in God or in Christ, springing from faith in the same. The word “doubting” is the Greek word “diakrinō” which means: without any hesitation as to whether it be lawful or not, to be at variance with oneself, hesitate, doubt.
The word “wave” being used here is the Greek word “klydōn” which means: a dashing or surging wave, a surge, a violent agitation of the sea. The words “driven by the wind” being used is the Greek word “anemizō” which means: to agitate of drive by the wind. The word “tossed” being used is the Greek word “ripizō” which means: to toss to and fro, to agitate and it is used of a person whose mind wavers in uncertainty between hope and fear, between doing and not doing a thing.
There is so much to unpack from this powerful passage of Scripture. James through the leading of the Holy Spirit is revealing to us that in order for you to truly receive and retain wisdom from the Lord you need to come to Him in Faith. Or in other words having confidence that He is Who He says He is and He will do what He says He will do.
The perfect Scripture that reveals this truth is found in Numbers 23:19. This Old Testament verse states, “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?” God has no deception in Him, If it is found in His Word you can view it as the absolute Truth.
That is why it is so important that we are doers of the Word and not hearers of the Word only, James 1:22. You will not see the Scriptures working in your life until you stand by faith and believe that they are the final say. James discloses this when he says that we are not to doubt or be hesitant to trust the Lord.
He then goes on to give us the end result when we distrust and follow our own desire. We get thrown and tossed around violently like a wave does when there is a raging wind blowing caused by a fierce storm. This happens when your mind wavers with uncertainty between hope and fear. In a time of trial and testing, this is the worst kind of mindset to have.
You are a prime target for the enemy’s deceitful schemes. He loves to use those vulnerable moments when you are facing difficult situations to plant seeds of doubt in your mind. If you are not firmly planted on the Gospel message which is the Word of God then you will struggle to overcome the trials that you will face. Just like the waves of the sea got tossed to and fro so will you.
Another powerful passage of Scripture that discloses what happens when you are a wavering Christian is found in James 1:8. It states, “He is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.” When you aren’t standing firm on the Word of God which is supposed to be your Firm Foundation you will waver, it is inevitable. You will find yourself struggling to pass the test God has set before you, chasing every wind of doctrine, and being caught in the snares of the devil.
The words of our Saviour are so essential and so powerful that it is a literal Sword in the spirit. God’s Word has the ability to renew your entire frame of mind, counterattack the arrows of the enemy, tear down strongholds, build up your faith, guide you to do the right thing in life, overcome demonic oppression, and so much more!
We have to get to the point in our walk with the Lord Jesus Christ where we display an act of faith believing that if He said it in His Word; He is faithful to fulfill His Promises. You cannot afford to be doubtful, wavering back and forth like raging waves in the midst of the sea. Regardless of what your situation looks like, let God’s Word always and I mean always have the final say!
