Know Who You are in Christ-There is Power in Your Words
One of the things that we often underestimate is the power of one of the smallest members of our body and that is your tongue. The Book of James gives us some significant information pertaining to your tongue.
James 3:5-7 reveals to us, “Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind.”
James goes even further into when he details in James 3:8-10, “But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.”
Our tongues are filled with the ability to speak negativity or positivity into every situation. The unfortunate part about it is that a lot of Christians don’t know the power that the Word of God holds. Their lack of knowledge on Biblical principles is what is keeping them bound by the words that they speak.
James is extremely clear in these passages of Scripture when he reveals that our tongues:
Can kindle a fire
Can defile your whole body
Change the course of your life
Is unruly
Full of deadly poison
Has the ability to curse
They can also:
Proclaim God’s Word boldly
Speak life into a situation
Bring forth blessings
That is why we have to be so careful of the things that we say because our Words hold weight. Often times, a born again believer of Jesus Christ will vocally come into agreement with the thoughts that the enemy is planting in their minds. Once these thoughts are verbally spoken, that is where the agreement takes place giving the devil legal access to create chaos in your life.
For example:
“I am never going to make enough money to pay for all of my bills!”
“I am never going to get pregnant!”
“I will never be free from this demonic oppression that I’m in!”
“I am going to be sick forever!”
“I am never going to be able to break free from this addiction!”
When you begin to proclaim negative words like these over your life, you are activating a Biblical law that death and life is in the power of your words. You best believe that the devil knows this principle and will do everything to try to get you to come into agreement with his lies. That includes speaking word curses like these out of your mouth.
You can see this commandment played out in real time with the people around you. If you sat back and analyzed a person’s life that is always speaking negativity and hatred, they never have a positive thing to see, and they are always right. If you dug a little deeper into their overall health 9 times out of 10 they are always sick and nothing good is going on in their lives.
Why? Once again, the Biblical principle states that death and life is in the power of your tongue. If you are always speaking death into every one of your situations, death will be your portion. Likewise if you consistently speak positivity and God’s Word over your circumstances, life will be your portion.
Death and Life is found in your Words
The passage of Scripture that breaks this Biblical law down perfectly is found in Proverbs 18:21 it states, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.” The book of Proverbs was written by King Solomon one of the wisest kings to ever live and this book is one of the most powerful books in the entire Bible.
It is filled with spiritual rules and principles that we need to know in order to stay ahead of the devil’s tactics against us! The words that we say can change the entire course of our lives. That is why the Word of God is so significant because it is meant to guide us, correct us, and instruct us on how we are to live as believers of Jesus Christ.
In this verse of Scripture we can determine that Solomon is making it known that death and life is in what you say. It is meant to be taken literally. The fact of the matter is that you can create curses or blessings over your life based off of the words spoken out of your mouth. That is why it is so important to guard your tongue from speaking hurtful and negative words.
It is vital that you allow the Word of God to cleanse your heart and mind because it will reflect in the things you say. The Lord tells us in Proverbs 23:7 “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he…” So it is inevitable, evil things will come out of a person that has a perverse tongue and lies will come out of a person that has a lying tongue. We have to be very careful about what we let marinate in our spirit because it will eventually have an adverse effect on us.
That is why this spiritual law that God is showing us in this passage is so important. It gives us the understanding that speaking positively will bring positive outcomes and speaking negatively will bring you negatives ones. That is what the last part of the verse is referencing when it states, “…you will eat its fruit.”
In other words: what you reap is what you sow; there is no way of getting around it. If you sow negative words and actions that is what you will produce; if you sow positivity and love that is what you will produce. It is critical that you gain the understanding of the way that God’s spiritual laws work because you can unknowingly be placing word curses over your life and your family’s lives by what verbiage you are selecting to use.
Let your mouth be a mouth that praises the Lord, prays for your family, and speaks the promises of God over your life and your loved ones. Be the one that will intercede for everyone when nobody else is. Let the weight that your words carry be used for good and not for evil.
Your Words Move Mountains
Over and over again throughout the Scriptures in the Bible we are shown the power behind words. One example is found in Mark 11:13-14 and it states, “And seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He would find something on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. In response Jesus said to it, “Let no one eat fruit from you ever again.”
Jesus spoke to the fig tree and it withered away. The Lord spoke to a thing and it had to obey, he wants us to do the same. We can see exactly what that means when He tells you to speak to your mountain in Matthew 17:20. It states, “So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.”
Jesus expects us to know how to use our authority in His Name to speak life into every situation. The word “mountain” being used is the Greek word “oros” which means: to remove mountains, to accomplish most difficult and incredible things. In other words anything that is in your way hindering you from walking in your Destiny.
Your mountain can be:
Your sickness or disease
Demonic oppression
Hindrances in your finances
Inability to have a baby
Inability to get married
Jesus describes having faith as small as a mustard seed because your faith is what will make your mountain move out of your way. What is mustard seed faith? A mustard seed is one of the smallest seeds but it creates one of the biggest trees. Similarly, when you first come to Christ your faith is small but as you see God come through for you over and over again your faith will begin to naturally grow.
The opposite of faith is unbelief and that is why the Lord points out in this passage that His disciples allowed unbelief to get in the way of them walking in power. Remember faith is the substance of things that we are hoping for even though we cannot see it yet, Hebrews 11:1. We have to be willing to stand firm on the Word of God and speak the Scriptures over every circumstance believing that nothing is impossible for you when God is on your side.
It really boils down to trusting that the Lord means every word that He says. If He said it He is faithful to accomplish it. In order to know what God’s promises are, you have to be willing to get into your Bible and study it, digest it, and apply it to your daily life, 2 Corinthians 5:17. The Scriptures are so powerful and necessary that the Lord commands us to meditate on them day and night.
There are two passages that disclose this very thing. One of them is found in Psalm 1:2 and it states, “But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.” The Lord is making it known to us that meditating on His law should bring us delight knowing that we are pleasing our Heavenly Father by doing so.
It is also disclosed in Joshua 1:8 and it states, “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”
Again here we can determine that God is making it clear that His Word should never depart from your mouth. Not only are we to speak God’s Word out consistently we are to meditate in it day and night. Then the Lord gives us the result for doing so; our way will be prosperous and we will have good success.
The final Scripture that I want to highlight regarding telling your mountain to move is found in Mark 11:23. It states, “For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.”
This passage of Scripture is coming straight from Jesus Christ Himself letting us know that when we say to our mountain to move and get out of the way by faith it will be done. The key thing that He is driving home to us is the fact that we cannot speak to our circumstance while having doubt in our hearts. The two do not agree.
God’s Word is the absolute Truth and when we can get that engrained in our minds our faith will be unmovable. The problem is when the mountains of life come our direction we completely forget what God had to say about them in His Word. We cannot allow that to be the case, we have to get to the point in our lives where God’s Word is the final say no matter what the situation looks like!
Conclusion
Whether you are a believer or a nonbeliever your words have an impact on your life. God is very clear that death and life is literally in the power of your tongue and He means just that. You can speak death, curses, negativity, adverse outcomes into your life; or you can speak God’s Word which bring forth life, blessings, positivity, and positive outcomes the choice will always be yours!
When you are faced with a difficult situation what is the first thing that comes out of your mouth? Are you already facing your challenge from a negative mindset or are you speaking God’s Word over your circumstance. Never underestimate the power of your words, speak to your mountain and tell it move and believe that it has to obey!
