Positive Quote for the Week-Do not Repay Evil with Evil

“When done wrong never take matters into your own hands repaying evil with evil. Give it to the Lord and He will fight your battles!” Erica Willis

An example of passages that are completely clear about how the Lord feels about repaying evil with evil is found in Romans 12:17-19. Paul reveals, “Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.”

In these verses of Scripture the Apostle Paul through the Holy Spirit is speaking to the Church at Rome. He is giving them examples on what it really means to “…not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…,” Romans 12:2. The way that people usually handle a situation where they are offended or insulted is they strike back. They are quick to take matters in their own hands.

That is contrary to what the Word of God is telling us to do. He is clear on how He wants us to treat our enemies. Instead of trying to get back at them He is instructing us to make peace. He goes so far as to say in the verses that follow:

“Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good,” Romans 12:20-21.

That seems impossible for the average person to do but this is the love of Christ. When Jesus was dying on the cross one of His concerns was asking His Father in heaven to forgive the ones that had put Him there to begin with, to forgive the ones that were mocking Him, and to forgive the ones that were gambling for His clothing as He was dying for them. In the midst of all of the evil being done to Him, He still had mercy on His enemies, Luke 23:34. The Lord expects us to have the same kind of compassion on our adversaries.

One of the main reasons that it is so crucial that you do not repay evil with evil and that you do not let the sun go down on your anger is so that you are not overcome with evil. The enemy will use your emotional state to attempt to get a foothold or “place” in your life. He will try any way he can to come in and invade your space, don’t give him the satisfaction!

Scriptures on loving your enemies

Matthew 5:44 “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you.”

Luke 6:27-28 “But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you.”

1 Peter 3:9 “not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.”

Proverbs 16:7 “When a man’s ways please the Lord, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.”

Proverbs 20:22 “Do not say, “I will recompense evil”; wait for the Lord, and He will save you.”
