The Fruit of the Spirit (Love)

What is the fruit of the Spirit?

The fruit of the Spirit or Holy Spirit is what is produced when you allow the Spirit of God to transform and renew your heart and mind. The Scripture that discloses exactly what the fruit of the Spirit consist of is found in the book of Galatians in the New Testament. In Galatians 5:22-23 the Apostle Paul writes, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

Here we can see that Paul through the leading of the Holy Spirit is disclosing what your character should look like if you are allowing Jesus Christ to be the Lord of your life. It takes the power of the Holy Spirit for a person to renew and transform their hearts and minds. When people become believers of Jesus Christ there are a lot of things within them that need to be changed.

We are born with a sin nature so if you do not know Christ as your Lord and Savior it is hard to change those fleshly desires. One significant work of the Holy Spirit is to convict us when we are heading in the wrong direction. He is our Helper and the one that guides us into all truth, John 16:13.

As children of God we should want to seek to know and understand the character of God. How does one go about doing that? Our Heavenly Father has laid out exactly Who He is in the Holy Bible. The problem is that a lot of Christians really don’t take the time out to read, study, and apply God’s Word to their daily walk with Jesus Christ.

When you allow the Lord’s Word to fully transform and renew your mind (Romans 12:2) you are allowing the fruit of the Spirit (Holy Spirit) to begin to develop. That is how you are able to display those particular character traits that the people in the Kingdom of God should strive to exhibit.

As Christians we are the salt of the Earth (Matthew 5:13) and the light of the World (Matthew 5:14). What that means is that it is our responsibility to share the love of God to others that may not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It is almost impossible to be a disciple for the Lord if you’re filled with negativity and your heart is not in the right place.

There should be a distinct uniqueness about you that others should be able to discern the moment they meet you because you will display: love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control, and the presence of God will be radiating through you. That is how you will know that you are displaying the fruits of the Spirit.

I am going to go over love which is one of the nine characteristics that are described in Galatians 5:22-23.

Love

1 John 4:8

“He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”

Here is a verse of Scripture written by John letting us know how significant love is. We have to remember that God is absolute love so if you are a child of God it is your obligation to radiate love to the best of your ability. We are vessels of the Lord placed here on Earth to show others what it truly means to be a believer of Jesus Christ.

So, if you are picking and choosing who you are going to show love to then you are not really showing love at all. The Word of God tells us in Mark 12:31 “And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” The Lord is plainly letting us know that loving your neighbor as you love yourself is an actual commandment.

The reason why this is so substantial is because when you fail to love others unconditionally it allows adverse emotions like: anger, bitterness, animosity, and resentment to creep right on in. These are breeding grounds for the devil and his kingdom to establish strongholds against you. You want to clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience and put on love which is the bond of perfection, Colossians 3:12-14.

In other words cover yourself with these positive characteristics as if they were a piece of clothing that you would wear daily. That is how much we should strive to demonstrate these beautiful attributes every single day. If you’ve ever shown compassion for someone that radiated nothing but hatred and malice towards you, then you know exactly what this means.

The Lord also gives us another example of this fruit of the Holy Spirit:

Luke 6:32-36

“But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back. But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.”

There are so many little nuggets that we can grasp by these verses of Scripture written by Luke. The Lord is giving us an illustration and a direct contrast: if you love someone that loves you back, how can that be a difficult thing to do? Should we receive credit for that? As human beings it is our nature to show kindheartedness, compassion, and consideration to those that do the same for us.

But, what about the people that are nasty, vile, rude, and just straight up disrespectful to you? How are you treating them? The Lord is letting us know in these passages exactly how we are to treat our enemies. We are supposed to show them the fruit of kindness and love without expecting it in return. We are supposed to be representatives of the Lord, so when people see us they should be able to see the image of Christ within us.

Can you imagine how much of an impact you would have on a person that is being rude and disrespectful towards you but you choose to show them the love of Christ? Whether they were to admit it or not, they would view you differently than others. I have seen it first hand in my life.

I had a co-worker that was mean as mean can get, she was the epitome of what hateful looked like. She made my job environment a difficult one to work in. The Lord was definitely using her as a test to see if the “old” me was going to peak its nasty head. I’ll have to admit that there were a couple of times that I almost went there, but I didn’t.

I gave her a Bible, shared my faith with her, and prayed for her. The Lord was doing a work in her through me, but I could’ve ruined that if I had chosen to fight fire with fire. The last day I worked there, she cried when I left and I knew then exactly what it meant to love on someone that didn’t know how to love me back!

It is only by the power of the Holy Spirit living on the inside of me that I was able to radiate love instead of retaliating. That is one example of how this fruit of the Spirit will begin to grow on the inside of your heart. When you digest the Word of God and it gets into your spirit, you will begin to completely transform. That doesn’t mean that you will not get tested.

Often times, the Lord will put you into certain scenarios to see if there is anything that needs to be filtered out. He is consistently pruning and shaping us to be more and more like Christ. The thing is you have to be willing to let the Holy Spirit lead, guide, and convict you when He needs to.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

“Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”

There are a lot of character traits that the Apostle Paul is disclosing in these verses of Scripture. We have an understanding of what positive qualities a Christian living a spirit-filled life should look like. The Holy Spirit plays a vital role in helping you transform your heart and mind to look more like the mind and heart of Christ.

The more time that you spend in the Word of God, the more Scriptures you will have stored up in your heart for the Holy Spirit to bring to your remembrance. When you begin to veer off course in your behaviors, He will give you a check in your spirit letting you know that you need to get back on track.

The reason why this is so important is because you are supposed to radiate the love of Christ continually. When you can keep your composure when someone is being blatantly offensive and impolite, you are definitely displaying love and patience.

You will see the result of the Holy Spirit working in your life the more that you spend time with Him. That deep intimacy paired with remaining in your Word daily will give you the necessary tools needed to develop the fruits of the Spirit.

I have seen this displayed in my own life. The more established my relationship is with the Lord and the more that I allow Him to be the Lord of my life, the more the fruits of the Spirit are shown. The Holy Spirit will convict me in a matter of seconds and I know at that moment that I need to make things right.

It definitely takes time and hasn’t been the easiest thing, but the reward of living my life for Christ no matter what has been indescribable. I don’t want to do anything that creates any distance between me and the Lord. Learning and developing the fruits of the Spirit will ensure that you stay on the right track.

Conclusion

One of the most important roles that the Holy Spirit plays is renewing and transforming our minds, Romans 12:2. As you continue to read the Lord’s Word, study it, and apply it to your daily life, you will begin to see yourself completely change. The more that you are willing to fully submit to God the more of the fruit of His Spirit you will see begin to become apparent.

It will not happen overnight but the key thing is to want to make those necessary changes in the way that you speak, the way that you act, and the way that you think. There really isn’t any excuse because if you are a Christian you have the Holy Spirit living on the inside of you guiding you, leading you, and convicting you. The question is: are you heeding to His voice?
