The Importance of Reading your Bible-Reveals Jesus Christ

There is no doubt about it, every page and every verse of the Bible reveals Jesus Christ in one way or another. It is all about His Story. The Son of God Who died on the cross and shed His own blood for every human being so that we could have a chance at eternal life with the Father in heaven. A lot of people claim that they know exactly who Jesus is but they don’t have an intimate relationship with Him.

So, how does one get to know Who the King of kings actually is? One of the best ways to understand the Lord is to read His Word. There is revelation of Jesus Christ written in all the books of the Bible both in the Old Testament and the New Testament. As Christians we have the gift of the Holy Spirit living on the inside of us. One of His primary roles is to reveal the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Spirit of God is the author (2 Timothy 3:16) and the interpreter (2 Peter 1:20) of God’s Word. Who is better equipped to give us the understanding of the Lord than the Holy Spirit? He is our Helper guiding us into all truth. John 15:26 reveals, “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.”

Here we can plainly see that the Lord’s Spirit is not only our Helper but He is the One that bears witness within us as to Who Jesus is. One of the main ways that God speaks to us is through His Word. That is why it is significant that you get into your Bible and read it on your own. We are to study to show ourselves approved, 2 Timothy 2:15.

In other words we are to have enough understanding of the Word of God that we can rightly divide His Word differentiating it from false doctrine. It is our own responsibility to develop an intimate relationship with the Lord. As Christians we are representations of Jesus. In order for us to represent Him to the best of our abilities we need to know Him personally, we need to know His character and not just know the name Jesus Christ. We have to get into our Bibles daily; there really is no better way!

I am going to go over some Scriptures that you can meditate on regarding how the Word of God reveals His Son Jesus Christ.

John 1:14

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”

Here is a passage of Scripture out of the Gospel of John that discloses how the Lord Jesus Christ is the Word of God that became flesh. John also reveals to us that grace and truth came through Him, John 1:17. As followers of Jesus Christ we need to gain as much knowledge about Him as we can. How can you become His disciple if you don’t know anything about Him.

Some facts about Jesus Christ are:

He was born of a virgin named Mary, Matthew 1:23

He is the One and only first begotten Son of the living God, John 3:16

We are given the chance at eternal life because of what He did on the cross, Romans 6:23

We are reconciled back to God the Father because of His shed blood, 2 Corinthians 5:18

Salvation is found in Him, Act 4:12

By His stripes we are already healed, Isaiah 53:5

His is absolute love, Ephesians 5:2

We were created in His image as the Lord’s handiwork, Ephesians 2:10

He is our Mediator, 1 Timothy 2:5

His mission is to save the lost, Luke 19:10

Through Him all believers are new creations, 2 Corinthians 5:17

Through Him we are allowed to have forgiveness for our sins, Acts 13:38-39

His Name is above every other name, Philippians 2:9-10

He is the cornerstone that your foundation needs to be built on, Acts 4:11

He is your power in weakness, 2 Corinthians 12:9

He has the keys of death meaning that He has authority to release us from eternal death, Revelation 1:18

He destroyed the works of the devil, 1 John 3:8, Colossians 2:15

These are just some of the descriptions of Who our amazing Lord is there is so much more.

The more that you read your Word, the more the Holy Spirit will have to pull from so that He can properly reveal Jesus Christ to you. The reason why that is so vital is because it is our responsibility to appropriately display the characteristics of the Lord to others that do not know Him. Every fruit of the Spirit mentioned in the book of Galatians is demonstrating the character of Christ in one way or another.

I go into detail about the fruit of the Spirit in my articles:  Fruit of the Spirit (Self-Control)Fruit of the Spirit (Gentleness)The Fruit of the Spirit (Faithfulness)The Fruit of the Spirit (Goodness)The Fruit of the Spirit (Kindness)The Fruit of the Spirit (Longsuffering)The Fruit of the Spirit (Peace)The Fruit of the Spirit (Joy), and The Fruit of the Spirit (Love).

It is important that we develop faith in the Lord which is how we please God. Hebrews 11:6 details, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” He is clear that it is impossible to please Him without faith.

But what is He referring to when He mentions faith? God is referring to faith in Jesus Christ and what He did for us on the cross at Calvary. The Scripture that is referencing how one becomes saved is in the book of Romans when the Apostle Paul states, “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation,” Romans 10:9-10.

We can see in these verses of Scripture that it is critical that you believe Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior deep down in your heart. You can’t just say that you are a Christian but know why, not know anything about Him, and don’t spend any time with Him or in His Word. Just like you develop intimacy with your spouse or children, the same thing applies when developing intimacy with Jesus. He speaks to us through His Word.

So, if you are not intentionally putting time aside specifically for Him, how can you expect to develop a strong relationship with Him? If you didn’t speak to your spouse for days at a time, your marriage probably wouldn’t last. How much more time should we be dedicating to the most important relationship that we will ever have? The last thing you ever want to hear Jesus say is “…I never knew you; depart from Me…” Matthew 7:23.

John 5:39-40

“You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.”

In these verses out of the book of John we see that Jesus is letting us know that believing in the Scriptures alone will not validate your salvation and eternal life. You have to actually believe in the One that the Word of God is testifying about and that is the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the One that came in the flesh and died a painful death on the cross for our “just in case.”

Just in case we choose to love Him back. The fact of the matter is that there is no way for us to receive eternal life with the Father in Heaven than through Jesus Christ. The Word of God is explicit in John 14:6 when it states, “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” The Lord is definitive when He is stating that there is nobody that can come to the Father without going through Him.

Reading your Bible and understanding the Person of Jesus Christ will also help you understand the Father. Jesus describes “…He who has seen Me has seen the Father..,” John 14:9. They are One in the same. As you begin to delve into the Scriptures they will start to come alive to you with the help of the Holy Spirit. You will understand why it is so important to read your Bible daily, it is the bread of life.

The Lord’s Word is the testimony of Jesus Christ. Every letter written was inspired by the Spirit of God for a purpose. Hebrews 4:12 is clear when it states,” For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

The Word of God is your Sword that needs to be sharpened; you cannot afford to allow it to become dull. It is the key to life when it comes to how you should live as a Christian, how you remain protected from the schemes of the devil, it helps you develop an intimate relationship with the Lord, it is how your faith is built, the Lord’s promises are revealed, and it discloses how much the Lord loves every single one of us. It is literally your lifeline!

Conclusion

One of the most important books ever put together is the Bible. It reveals the story of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. It is vital that you get into your Word study it, digest it, and apply it to your daily life. One thing that you never want to do is think that you are okay just listening to a preacher going over a couple of verses of Scripture during a Sunday sermon. That is not enough.

The Word of God is your double-edged Sword, it is living and your number one weapons against the snares of the devil. As Christians it is our responsibility to understand Jesus Christ. How can you share His Gospel to others if you don’t really know it yourself? The Lord desires an intimate relationship with every single one of us and one of the main ways that He speaks to us is through His Word.
