The Power of Your Tongue!

Most people in general underestimate the Power of our tongues forgetting that our words can literally bring forth life or death. Proverbs 18:21 gives us the perfect description when King Solomon writes, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.” As we break down this verse of Scripture we can see that the words that you speak can encourage, inspire, and motivate; or what you speak can agitate, hinder, hurt, and damage.

We have to get to a point in our lives where we take what we say seriously. You can invite Blessings or curses into your life based upon the things that come out of your mouth. God’s Word is very specific on the importance of having self-control when it comes to your tongue.

Take a step back for a moment and analyze your life: how to do you speak to others, your family members, your spouse, your children, and how do you speak to yourself? It you are filled with negativity in every aspect of your life regardless of how things are going good or bad, you have to ask yourself why?

The fact of the matter is you could be cursing yourself or others because of the things that are coming out of your mouth and not even realize it. James 3:10 reveals a lot when James explains, “Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things out not be so.” The Lord is specifically saying that this should not be a practice for believers of Christ.

Below I have listed some of the most important strategies pertaining to how to handle one of the smallest member of your body, your tongue!

1. Proclaim the Word of God over your life:

Never undervalue the Power of God’s Word. Remember Hebrews 4:12 describes how Potent the Lord’s Word is when it states “for the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” The bible is considered a Sword meaning that it has the ability to cut through even the fiercest strongholds and the most powerful demons wreaking havoc in your life.

The thing is, a lot of times we open the door to the enemy by the negative things that we say. The devil will use your tongue against you to give him and his demonic kingdom the legal right to create chaos in any area that they can. Just like when you are arrested and the officer tells you that you have the right to remain silent and anything that you say will be used against you; the same thing is true for the spirit realm anything that you say can and will be used against you!

On the flip side, when you begin to proclaim the Word of God over your life, you will begin to see a shift in the atmosphere. The enemy knows the Scriptures more than most of us do (Matthew 4:6) and knows that he has to abide by what the Lord’s Word says pertaining to spiritual laws, rules, and principles.

The amazing thing about the Lord’s Word is that it is full of His promises and He is Faithful to deliver what He has guaranteed if you believe that He can. Faith that is as small as a mustard seed can move the biggest mountains that are standing in your way. He is not a man that He shall lie and He takes His Word very seriously placing it even above His own Name, Psalm 138:2.

The problem that we face when trying to proclaim the Lord’s Word over our lives is that we allow the devil to affect us mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually making it difficult to believe that the Lord can come through for us. So it becomes challenging to stand on the Scriptures and believe what they say by Faith.

How do we increase our Faith in His Word? Romans 10:17 tells us what we need to do, it states “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” We can unquestionably see that the Lord is telling us in order for us to build our Faith we must hear His Word (Rhema) or on time word. He speaks to us in many different ways but the main way is through the Holy Scriptures.

That is why it is imperative that you remain diligent about digesting the Bible; I cannot begin to explain to you enough how Powerful it is when you saturate your heart with Scripture. When you are able to stand firm on the Living Word of God you have the capability to receive freedom, claim your healing, change your situation, increase your Faith, and fight back against the schemes of the enemy!

We are not to be ignorant of the devil’s devices, 2 Corinthians 2:11. He loves to shoot fiery arrows at you mind and make you feel like they are your own thoughts and feelings. So what begins to happen is that you start to believe them as your own and before you know it that depression has now turned into suicidal thoughts and you don’t know how to stop them.

Romans 12:2 is clear when it states, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Analyzing this Scripture we can see that the Lord is revealing to us what we need to do to transform our minds which will combat the weapons against us. Remember, when you know the Truth (the Word of God) and abide by the laws that God has given you it will make you free, John 8:31-32.

The primary thing to keep in mind is that the Lord is very specific when it comes to His Word and the fact that it never comes back to Him void, Isaiah 55:11. He has purpose for your life and wants to complete the plans that He has for you, Jeremiah 29:11. Don’t ever get discouraged, instead stand firm on the Word of God knowing that He is Faithful to fulfill every promise that He has guaranteed for every one of us!

2. Proclaim healing over your life:

When sickness takes over your body and you feel like no matter what you do there seems to be no ending in sight it can be discouraging! God doesn’t want us living in a state of torment He came into the world for us to have life and have life more abundantly, John 10:10. As challenging as it may be we have to proclaim our healing over our lives knowing that the Lord has the ability to heal you no matter what you are facing!

One of the names of God is Jehovah Rapha which means Healer so knowing that He is our Healer what would make you thing that He has the inability to do so. His Hand is not shortened (Isaiah 59:1) and there is nothing impossible for God (Luke 1:37).

The Word of the Lord goes into detail in Isaiah 53:5 when he states, “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.” Analyzing this scripture we can undoubtedly see that one of the reasons that Jesus Christ died on the cross for us is so that we can declare our healing.

He disarmed the power that the enemy had over us which was what the devil was using to keep us in sickness, disease, bound, and oppressed, Colossians 2:14-15. The authority has been given to the believers of Jesus Christ so never doubt the Power of God already activated when it comes to your restoration! He loves us too much to allow us to remain in a state of physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual defeat!

So when the devil tries to torment your mind with fear, doubt, and unbelief you need to combat his words with the Lord’s Words. Never come into agreement with the words being whispered in your ear because that is exactly what the devil wants you to do. He is a liar and the father of lies, John 8:44. Regardless of what your situation looks like believe that God can make a way out of no way!

3. Watch what you say:

Life and death is in the Power of your tongue, Proverbs 18:21. The fact of the matter is everything that comes out of your mouth will have a negative or a positive effect on you in one way or the other. If you make it a habit to speak negativity, anger, wrath, bitterness, and gossip the words that you choose to use is what will be your consequences, Matthew 12:37. I cannot convey how important it is to watch what you say!

For instance, when you speak things like:

I am never going to amount to anything
I will never get out of this financial hole that I am in
I am so stupid
I am going to be sick forever

You are actually bringing word curses over yourself whether you realize it or not, Proverbs 18:21. The more you continue to proclaim these negative things, the more you will see them begin to manifest in your life! You can actually provoke physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual unfavorable outcomes by the words that you speak. If you come into agreement with the enemy regarding your life you have now given him legal access to cause chaos.

For example:

The devil is throwing fiery arrows at your mind making you feel like you are not worthy of being loved and instead of extinguishing those thoughts, you come into agreement with him. You begin to speak out loud how unloved you are, how unworthy you are, and how nobody loves you. You have now given him legal access to begin to make those thoughts a reality and they will begin to manifest in your life.

The Word of God tells us that we are to take every thought that is contrary to His Word into captivity, 2 Corinthians 10:5. Every one of us has the authority to quench all flaming darts that come at us before they can create strongholds that begin to take root.

We also have the ability to speak life into our lives when we choose to declare the Word of God by faith and believing it as absolute truth. Remember life and death is in the power of your tongue so you have the capacity to transform situations by speaking the Lord’s Word into your situation and believing by Faith that it can be done.

Matthew 17:20 states “So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.” Taking a deeper look into this scripture we can conclude that the Lord is showing us how to speak to the mountain (your sickness, your struggle, your hardship, and everything in between) and tell it to move.

When what we are asking for in prayer is aligned with the Lord’s Word as well as His will for our lives, we can expect a positive outcome. He has given us everything that we need in order to overcome and triumph over any obstacle that we will ever encounter and He is showing us how to do it, Mark 11:23-24.

It then becomes our responsibility to follow through trusting and believing that God’s Word is true. We can stand on His promises knowing that He means what He says, He is a Man that does not lie, Numbers 23:19. The more that you see those promises manifest in your life the more you will trust that God is always there for you, through every fire and through every storm!
