The Holy Spirit-Our Helper

Holy Sirit-Helper

Who is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, but they are all equally God. Matthew 3:16-17 is clear when Matthew states, “When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

In these verses of Scripture we can see all three members of the Trinity represented including the Holy Spirit. 1 John 5:7 also details the fact that all three Members of the Godhead are one, “For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.” He is a Person with emotions, mind, and a will, John 16:13, and is just as much God as the Father and the Son Acts 5:3-4.

Some of the Holy Spirit’s roles are: our Teacher, Guide, Revelator, Administer, Intercessor, Comforter, Counselor, convicts of sin, judgment, and righteousness, He gives you power and boldness to accomplish God’s will for your own life, and He glorifies Jesus and Jesus alone, and many other things. It is through the Holy Spirit that we are born again, John 3:5-8. He is so vital to our walk as Christians and it is impossible to make it through the trials and tribulations that you will face without His help and guidance.

I know for me when I was going through the dark period in my life when I was getting demonically attacked and didn’t know how I was going to make it through; it was the Holy Spirit that was teaching and guiding me out of the pit that I was in. It was through the power of the Spirit of God that I was able to overcome the enemy and his demonic kingdom, Acts 1:8. The Bible explains in 2 Corinthians 3:17, “Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” That is exactly how I was able to get set free, I relied on God’s Spirit to lead me to victory. Regardless of how long it took me, I was not willing to go down without a fight!

I had no knowledge of the spiritual realm or spiritual things and didn’t know what I had gotten myself into or how powerful the enemy actually is. The Holy Spirit taught me how to battle the devil one on one using my Sword which is the Word of God, Hebrews 4:12. During the ministry of Jesus Christ, He relied solely on God’s Spirit to guide and direct Him and He never left His side, Acts 10:37-38. We have to do the same if we are going to avoid the snares, schemes, and devices of our adversary the devil. He is a roaring lion consistently looking for someone to devour, 1 Peter 5:8.

We need to understand that it is the Spirit of God that is the Author (2 Timothy 3:16) and Interpreter (2 Peter 1:20-22) of the Holy Scriptures. He is the One that is going to give you the accurate explanation of the words that He inspired in the Bible. He will bring every Scripture to remembrance in the times that you need them, John 14:26. That is why it is so critical that we get into the Lord’s Word reading, studying, and applying it to our lives. We must study to show ourselves approved, 2 Timothy 2:15.

Can you just imagine having to engage in direct combat with the enemy with no arsenal? How can the Holy Spirit bring Scriptures to your remembrance if you have none stored in your memory bank to reference? This is a very dangerous place to be because you best believe the devil and his demons know the Lord’s Word, laws, rules, and regulations very well, Matthew 4:6. They will use your lack of knowledge against you, Hosea 4:6.

There are so many functions of the Holy Spirit in the lives of the believers of Jesus Christ. In this article I am going to target the area of Him being our Helper. I am going to list some scriptures below that will go into more detail on exactly how He does just that!

2 Corinthians (1)

2 Corinthians 3:2-3

“You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men; clearly you are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart.”

The entirety of the Bible was inspired by the Holy Spirit so it would be natural that He would be the One to give the Interpretation as well as write the Law on our hearts. The Apostle Paul is pointing out this fact to the Church at Corinth in these verses of Scripture. This is one of the functions of the Holy Spirit as well as aid in the transformation process.

He will convict you when you are heading in the wrong direction or acting in a manner that is contrary to the Word of God. True transformation occurs with the help of the Holy Spirit Who is your personal Guide ensuring that the Word of God is penetrating your heart. One of the primary requirements that is essential when developing a genuine relationship with the Spirit of God is the ability to be sensitive to Him.

Listening for that still small voice, the nudge in your spirit that something just isn’t right, or the Scripture that He is highlighting for you that you need in that moment. He is a gentle dove and will never force Himself upon you or go outside of your free will. That is why it is imperative that we develop the characteristics that will invite the Holy Spirit to operate in our lives: humility, purity, and sacrifice (willing to lay down our lives for Jesus Christ), Galatians 2:20.

The only way that one can bring about the authentic change that God is searching for is if you allow the Lord’s Word to be written on your heart. He doesn’t look at outward appearance but He searches your heart, Jeremiah 17:10. It is a constant transformation by the renewing of your mind, Romans 12:2.

In order for the Holy Spirit to help you sift out those nasty characteristics, you have to get into the Word of God: read it, study it, and apply it to your life. The Holy Spirit needs to have the access to Scriptures that He can bring to your remembrance when He is trying to guide you into all truth, John 16:13. He cannot do that if your Scriptural memory bank is blank!

John

John 16:7-13

“Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they do not believe in Me; of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.”

I am adding all of these verses of Scripture from the book of John because it gives us a clear understanding of the Holy Spirit as our Helper. Breaking these passages down we can see that Jesus is explaining to His disciples one of the reasons why He has to go back to the Father (after His death, burial, and resurrection). He makes it clear that it is to their advantage that we receive the Helper which is the Holy Spirit. This was most definitely a difficult thing for them to understand because they had no idea what He was talking about. All they knew is that He was speaking to them about Him leaving and never returning. They didn’t have a clue how their walk as followers of the Lord Jesus Christ would drastically change because of the power, guidance, and help of the Holy Spirit.

The Lord’s Spirit is just as significant to the lives of Christians today. A lot of times He is underestimated, misunderstood, and in some churches He isn’t even mentioned. He is extremely vital for any person, pastor, ministry, church, or anyone else wanting to have an authentic encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ, John 16:14.

Another thing to point out in these passages of Scripture is the fact that the Holy Spirit will guide us into all Truth which is the Word of God. He will be the One that we need to listen to and lean on to discern whether or not we are receiving false teaching. Right now, there are so many Christians getting led down a path of destruction because of following doctrines of demons, 1 Timothy 4:1. This is one of the greatest schemes that the enemy uses time and time again.

In John 16:12 the Lord describes, “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. “ As we look deeper into this Bible verse we can see that Jesus knows that His time is limited and wanted to prepare His disciples for what was to come. He is clearly explaining that He has so much more that He wants to say to them but it wasn’t time for them to know of these things just yet.

Then he goes into more detail on the subject when He states, “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth…,” John 16:13. He interprets the authentic Word of God undiluted and is the Representative of Jesus Christ here on Earth and one of His primary purposes is to bring glory to Him, John 16:14. That is why if you are under a ministry that does not glorify and give honor to Jesus Christ; that should be a red flag for you. There will be no manifestation of the Spirit flowing in that church because He will only reside where the glory is given to the Lord and the Lord alone.

Romans

Romans 8:13-14

“For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.”

Here the Apostle Paul is explaining to the Church at Rome the importance of dying to your fleshly sin nature. In Galatians 5:19-21 Paul describes it clearly when he states, “Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

Every act listed in these verses is going to lead you down a path to your demise. In contrast, the Apostle Paul is saying for us not to follow these works of the flesh but instead to allow the Spirit of truth, which is the Holy Spirit, to show us how we are to live our lives according to the Word of God. He then goes on to say that those that are led by the Spirit are sons of God.

As we grow in our Christian walk with the Lord Jesus Christ, we are not supposed to remain spiritually stagnant. If we are allowing the Holy Spirit to guide us through the knowledge of the Word of God our lives should reflect it. We are to study to show ourselves approved (2 Timothy 2:15) and move from glory to glory by the Spirit of the Lord (2 Corinthians 3:18).

Hebrews 5:13-14 gives the perfect explanation, “For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”

As we dive into these two verses of Scripture we can plainly see that there should be some advancement in our walk with the Lord Jesus Christ. You should not be drinking milk in the same condition spiritually years into your life as a believer of Jesus Christ. God is distinguishing the difference between a babe (an infant) verses someone that is of a “full age.”

I know for me when I first God truly saved, I didn’t know what I was doing. I didn’t know much about God, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit. You best believe the devil knew it; he chewed me up and spit me out. I opened up doors to the enemy ignorantly which allowed him to legally come into my life and almost destroy it. I was thrown in a spiritual war that I wasn’t prepared for and didn’t how to fight back. To say that I was a babe in Christ was an understatement!

The Holy Spirit was my Guide, showing me step by step what I needed to do to fight the devil back. He is our personal Teacher and will lead you to the absolute truth which is the Word of the living God, your double-edged Sword, Hebrews 4:12.

Galatians

Galatians 5:22-26

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.”

One way to tell if the Lord’s Spirit is truly working in your life is you are wanting to seek purity and remain humble willing to sacrifice your life to live for Jesus Christ, Philippians 1:21. This is one of the roles that God’s Spirit aids in; He helps transform the life of a believer. Titus 3:5 gives us the perfect explanation when Titus writes, “not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.”

Here we can see that one of the works of the Holy Spirit of God is to begin to wash, rejuvenate, and renew us spiritually at the point of salvation. The word regeneration that Titus is using is the Greek word palingenesia which means new birth and the word renewing used here is the Greek word anakainósis which means a renewal, renovation, and complete change for the better.

Our flesh wants to harbor unfavorable characteristics like adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, etc., Galatians 5:19-20. The Apostle Paul is telling us in Galatians 5:24 that we are to crucify the flesh or “destroy its power” that our sin nature has over us. The Lord’s Spirit will lead us and guide us into overcoming the negative emotions and traits that we have allowed into our hearts and minds because of the lack of spiritual maturity.

At first you will have a hard time adjusting because of your human nature. But as long as you are willing to make significant changes as you live for Jesus Christ wholeheartedly, the presence of the Holy Spirit will give you the power that you need to overcome these challenges. The Lord explains to us what the fruits of His Spirit should look like: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, Galatians 5:22. In other words these are the kind of characteristics that you will display if you are genuinely welcoming the help of the Holy Spirit in regards to new life as a born-again believer of Jesus Christ.

One role of the Holy Spirit is to be your mirror revealing what the condition of your heart is internally, 2 Corinthians 3:17-18.  The will of God is not for us to remain the same but to slowly and progressively change into the image of Jesus Christ. God’s Spirit will guide us in this area by pointing us to the Word of God. That is why it is so important that we spend time in the Bible, spend time in prayer, and spend time in the presence of the Holy Spirit. Remember, where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom, 2 Corinthians 3:17!

 Conclusion

As the body of Christ it is going to be impossible to successfully live your Christian life without the Help of God’s Spirit. A lot of times God’s people underestimate the importance of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer of Jesus Christ. He plays such a crucial role bringing you the undiluted message of truth, the gospel of your salvation, giving you understanding of God’s laws in both the Old Testament and the New Testament, leading you to eternal life with Christ, showing you the love of God, and so much more.

Our human heart is naturally wicked and deceitful, (Jeremiah 17:9), and that is why we need the person of the Holy Spirit to search our hearts and cleanse it from all unrighteousness. The Lord doesn’t care about what we look on the outside, he looks at our hearts. That is why we have to listen to that still small voice, that check in our spirit, and that conviction letting us know that we are stepping out of line. When we do, that is when we will begin to see the work of the Holy Spirit manifesting in our lives!
