Breaking Spiritual Strongholds: Fight Back!

Who are we fighting?

In order to develop a strategy on how to fight back against the strongholds being established in our lives, we need to know who we are fighting. To truly understand the enemy that you are facing we have to take a look at what the Word of God has to say. Ephesians 6:12 breaks it down perfectly when the Apostle Paul states, For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

Whether we want to believe it or not, our battle is with Satan and his demonic kingdom. In order for you to have a full grasp on the spiritual realm you have to know that it exists in the first place. A lot of people think that Satan is a figment of someone’s imagination or a story that was passed on from generation to generation. That is so far from the truth. He is a very powerful adversary that seeks to kill, steal, and destroy every single one of us. His kingdom is extremely militant and highly organized running like a well-oiled machine. There is no way that you can overcome his schemes and tactics in your own strength.

Here we can see the devil’s system mentioned through the Scripture highlighted above. Paul is letting us know that we are fighting against an extremely structured enemy with different levels and ranks within his kingdom. He details, “…but against  principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

What the Apostle Paul is listing is the different levels of darkness that we are at war with. They cannot be seen with the naked eye but you can see their destructive nature being played out in the lives of people every single day. That is why it is vital that you don’t remain ignorant to Satan’s plans, Satan’s strategies, and his devices, 2 Corinthians 2:11.

Whether you are a believer of Jesus Christ or a non-believer you are affected by Satan’s attacks in one way or another. The reason why he is more real to spirit filled believers is because of the threat imposed to his kingdom. He isn’t going to just allow you to continue to contest his schemes and not do something about it. If you aren’t facing any resistance you may want to make sure you aren’t heading in the same direction as he is.

The number one way that he sneaks into the lives of believers of Jesus Christ is to make us believe that he does not exist. By you remaining ignorant to his devices, he can remain undetected. Don’t underestimate the fact that he is hidden in plain sight. We need to understand the spiritual realm so that we can remain as equipped as we can ensuring that we are always one step ahead.

It is so important that you understand that life is completely spiritual. So, when the father of lies attempts to shoot his fiery darts in your direction you will know what to do. As Christians we need to learn how to fight back so that we can be powerful soldiers for Jesus Christ and not casualties of war!

I am going to go over some Scriptures that you can meditate on regarding how to fight back!

Fight from a place of victory

Colossians 2:14-15

“having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.”

When you are coming against the spiritual forces of evil, you need to make sure you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the devil and his kingdom have been defeated. Here we can see in these Bible verses that the Apostle Paul is making it clear that Jesus Christ disarmed and triumphed over the entire demonic kingdom when He died on the cross for our sins.

We need to recognize that He has given us the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions and all the power of the enemy, Luke 10:19. When you are engaging in this spiritual battle come from a place of victory and not defeat. One of his greatest weapons is instilling fear, but God tells us in His Word that we are not to have the spirit of fear but of power and a sound mind, 2 Timothy 1:7.

God has given us one of the most powerful weapons against the schemes of the devil. Some of the verses of Scripture that describe the weaponry that He has provided us with are:

  • Ephesians 6:13-17 “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
  • 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”
  • 1 John 4:4 “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”
  • Revelation 12:11 “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.”
  • Luke 10:19 “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”

These are just some of the passages of Scripture out of God’s Word that you can stand on to fight back against the spiritual forces of evil that we are all up against. We need to comprehend that our battle is not carnal and we need spiritual armor if we are going to succeed in this spiritual war.

Some other key verses that we need to get familiar with are:

  • 1 Peter 5:8 “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”
  • 2 Corinthians 11:13-14 “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.”
  • Matthew 13:19 “When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside.”

In order for us to fight the devil back we have to get ourselves into God’s Word, our double-edged Sword. Satan’s strategy is to establish spiritual strongholds in our minds because he knows that they are difficult to break. However, the Word of God has the power to make us free from every demonic attack, John 8:32.

Fight Your Flesh

Romans 7:23

“But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.”

The Apostle Paul is revealing a powerful truth from the Word of God. He is letting us know that there is a law (principle) in our members (flesh) that makes it hard for us to refrain from sin. Make no mistake about it; we have to die to our flesh daily so that the chances of us walking by our flesh are less likely.

Paul talks about having a battle that he faces with his flesh. When he wants to do good, he finds himself struggling because of the sin that dwells within him, Romans 7:17. It is the same scenario with us, if we feed our flesh that is what will eventually overcome and ultimately result in premature death.

Romans 8:23 is conclusive when the Apostle Paul states, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” As a child of God you have to learn how to fight your flesh if you want to prevent the demonic strongholds from being established in your mind. Sin is one of the primary doorways and the devil will use every opportunity to attempt to kill, steal, and destroy, John 10:10.

How does one go about overcoming the law (principle) that is in our members? The most effective way that we can fight our flesh is located in Romans as well. Romans 8:2 discloses, “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.” The Holy Spirit that dwells on the inside of every believer is what will set us free from the law (principle) of sin and death.

As we allow ourselves to be led by the Holy Spirit paired with our obedience to the Word of God, you begin to see the enemy’s plans for your life diminish. It is harder for him to develop spiritual strongholds in your mind when you have the mind of Christ, 1 Corinthians 2:16. That is why it is critical that we renew and transform the way that we think daily.

Do not give the devil a foothold

Ephesians 4:27

“ nor give place to the devil.”

This verse of Scripture given by the Apostle Paul through the leading of the Holy Spirit is short but is one of the most powerful passages. The word “place” used is the Greek word topos which means opportunity, power, or occasion for acting. In other words God is telling us clearly that we are not to give the devil an opportunity to infiltrate our lives in any way.

All he needs is for you to give him an open door to come in and he will make it his mission to wreak havoc in your life. As children of God it is our responsibility to know the Biblical laws that the Lord outlines in His Word. If you do not have the Lord’s Word written on your heart, it is going to be hard for you to discern Satan’s lies.

God’s Word discloses that His people perish for a lack of knowledge, Hosea 4:6. The truth of God is what is going to give us the weaponry that we need to counterattack the arrows of the devil. He establishes strongholds in our minds but if we have a renewed mind through the Lord’s Word it is going to be difficult for his tactics to work.

We are also given the power of the Holy Spirit living on the inside of us if we are believers of Jesus Christ. He will lead us, guide us, and give us the strength to overcome the enemy’s strategies. Whether we want to believe it or not, we are living in a spiritual world fighting against a powerful spiritual being that cannot be seen with the naked eye.

The good news is, we have the Spirit of God as our Helper and He is more powerful than Satan and his entire demonic kingdom. Living this Christian life, we are going to battle. It isn’t called spiritual warfare for no reason; we are in a wrestling match against a highly trained adversary. However, He that is in us is always going to be greater than he that is in this world, 1 John 4:4!

I have many articles regarding open doors that you can open to the enemy:  Spiritual Oppression-The dangers of Open Doors to the Enemy Part 1Spiritual Oppression-The dangers of Open Doors to the Enemy Part 2, Spiritual Oppression-The dangers of Open Doors to the Enemy Part 3,  Spiritual Oppression-The dangers of Open Doors to the Enemy Part 4, and Spiritual Oppression-Open Doors to the Enemy part 5.

Conclusion

Make no mistake about it, we are in a spiritual battle whether we understand it or not. The enemy that we are facing is strong and in our own power we cannot overcome him. One of his primary tactics that he uses on Christians consistently is developing strongholds in our mind.

If we do not recognize his tactics, we will be defeated. It is our responsibility as believers of Jesus Christ to know who we are up against, what his strategies are, and how to overcome them. If we don’t believe the devil exists, he’s already won. It is imperative that we get into our Bibles so that we can gain the knowledge of God necessary to win this war as soldiers for Jesus Christ!
