Spiritual Oppression: The Dangers of Open Doors to the Enemy-Part 2

Spiritual Oppression 2

Unforgiveness

Is Forgiving Someone Truly Necessary?

It is extremely necessary and crucial for you to forgive the people that have done you wrong regardless of what it is that caused you to harbor unforgiveness in your heart. There can be so many negative effects, negative emotions, and negative feelings when you refuse to let go of the offense, pain, or hurt that another person caused you to experience.

We are all human and have been done wrong at one time or another in our lives by family members, a partner, or other close relationships that you value. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t feel hurt or angry when someone does something to you but what I am saying is that it is detrimental for you to hold on to it and let it linger. There are so many benefits of forgiveness that will affect your health in a positive way when you don’t allow those chains of unforgiveness to control your life.

In an article called Forgiveness Your Health Depends on it, it stated that when you can truly forgive there are several benefits preventing health issues including lowering the risk of heart attack; improving cholesterol levels and sleep; and reducing pain, high blood pressure, and levels of anxiety, depression and stress.

That is the physical aspect of the ability to let the offenses that you are holding onto go. There are far greater consequences that we have to really be concerned about if we can’t find it in our hearts to forgive someone that wounded us in such a way that we feel is unforgiveable. The Word of God is explicitly clear on how the Lord feels about us forgiving others. I literally had to put this topic on its own as far as open doors to the enemy; that is how critical holding onto unforgiveness is.

This is something that I had to learn in my Christian walk with the Lord Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit would deal with me about harboring unforgiveness when it came to certain instances that hurt me in my life. As I began to study the Scriptures and learn about this repeated open door to the enemy, I realized how important it was not to allow things that happened to me cause me to become so offended that I would refuse to forgive that person.

This was not an easy thing for me by any means, I was the kind of person that could hold onto grudges like there was no tomorrow. If you did me wrong oh you best believe I would make sure that you knew how wrong you did me by the way that I treated you. As I got into the Word of God and allowed it to cleanse me, wash me, and renew my mind; I recognized how wrong I was and how bad the prison of unforgiveness really is.

An unforgiving sprit is one of the enemy’s number one devices that he uses against Christians. What happens when you hold onto an offense and refuse to let it go is it gives the devil and his minions the legal right to torment your life and that is exactly what they will do. They intentionally throw fiery arrows at your mind to get you to reflect on that one thing that so and so did to you so that you can develop unforgiveness in your heart.

The devil knows your every weakness, we are emotional by nature and he will use that to ensure your demise. There are so many Christians that are getting tormented daily by demonic spirits simply because they refuse to forgive those that have done them wrong. The Lord really had to deal with me in this area because I was that person that just didn’t let things go.

When I tell you that I have learned my lessons on open doors to the enemy and his kingdom that is an understatement! It is only by the grace of God that I was able to overcome the schemes of the devil. Now equipped with the knowledge of the Word of the Living God, I am going to share with you some Scriptures that will show you the dangers of holding onto unforgiveness.

Also if you haven’t read my previous blog on this topic: Spiritual Oppression-The Dangers of Open Doors to the Enemy Part 1. It will give you the first level of oppression that the enemy uses against us!

Matthew 18

Matthew 18:34-35

“And his master was angry, and delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him. “So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses.”

A little background on what’s going on in these two verses of Scripture, this is a part of a parable that Jesus is explaining to Peter regarding an unforgiving servant. He owed his master ten thousand talents which was a lot of money in that time and was begging him not to sell him, his wife, and his children to pay his debt. He just simply could not pay the money that he owed him, Matthew 18:4-25. The master of the servant felt compassion towards him therefore forgiving him of his debt, Matthew 18:27.

Instead of returning the favor to a fellow servant who owed him a fraction of what he owed his master, he threw him into prison instead and refused to forgive him of his debt, Matthew 18:31.  Now we come to Matthew 18:34, when the servant’s master found out about his wicked servant and the unforgiveness that he fostered in his heart, he delivered him over to the torturers. Then Jesus makes it extremely plain when He states, “So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses.” Matthew 18:35.

In other words what the Lord is saying is that if we fail to forgive our brothers and sisters their trespasses, our Heavenly Father will deliver us over to the tormentor (Satan and his kingdom). That is how dangerous hanging on to unforgiveness truly is! The will of God is for us to forgive others as He forgave us, Ephesians 4:32. It is scattered throughout the Bible in so many different areas that there really is no way of getting around it.

I know there are some things that people do to you that are so painful that you find it so difficult to forgive them. You feel like they don’t deserve your forgiveness. The thing is we didn’t deserve the Lord’s forgiveness of our sins yet He forgave us for every wicked, nasty, and vile thing that we have ever done. In fact He sent His only son to die for our transgressions so that we would have a chance at eternal life, John 3:16.

He expects us to extend the same grace to others. The act of forgiveness is such a powerful thing and you are the one that will benefit the most when you let that heavy burden go. It is not worth the door that will be opened up to the enemy to come in and take residence because he will.

Luke

Luke 6:37

“Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.”

Jesus is revealing something to us in this particular verse that is very telling. He is letting us know that in order for us to be forgiven by the Lord there is a stipulation: we must first forgive. In other words if we haven’t taken an inventory of our own hearts to see if there is any bitterness or unforgiveness towards others prior to going before the Lord to ask Him for forgiveness for our transgressions, we can come to the conclusion that we aren’t forgiven.

That is a dangerous place to be, you don’t want to be in a position where you don’t know where you stand with the Lord simply because you refuse to forgive others. Trust me, I know how difficult it can be to let the horrible things go that others have done to you and not dwell on them. It took me some time to understand that I was placing shackles on myself by clinging onto bitterness.

The devil will use this door and bust it wide open. Before you know it, your heart is filled with animosity, anger, wrath, hate, and every other negative emotion that you can think of. That root of bitterness will begin to mess with your peaceful sleep, mental health, and overall well-being and you won’t be able to pinpoint where it’s coming from. It all stems from your unforgiveness, you have to get rid of if no matter what it takes because it is not worth the mental, physical, emotional, and most importantly spiritual damage that it will cause!

The first step you want to take is repent to God for not forgiving your brothers and sisters as He commands us to do. Then allow the power of the Holy Spirit to give you the strength needed to let go of past events, painful experiences, and the emotional pain that others have put you through. You don’t want that root of bitterness to dig any deeper creating more issues in your life. Make the conscious decision that you want a fresh start because it is the only way that you can begin to display true forgiveness.

Release the negative emotions and let every old wound heal. It might be one of the hardest things that you will ever have to do but it can be done. The Lord can heal those open wounds but you have to be willing to let go of that poison of unforgiveness! It will take a renewal of your mind which can only be done by the Word of God. Choose the power of forgiveness versus the power that you will give the enemy if you don’t let the bitterness go.

Matthew 12

Matthew 12:33-34

“Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit. Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”

In these two passages of Scripture Jesus is speaking to the multitudes which were following Him as well as the Pharisees. He is explaining to them how you can analyze someone by the fruit that they produce. In other words anyone can say that they are a Christian but what kind of fruit are you producing? The condition of your heart is what will truly reveal everything. Remember, God doesn’t care what we look like on the outside He cares about what our heart is looking like on the inside, 1 Samuel 16:7.

The enemy loves to attack our hearts and infiltrate them. That is why it is so vital that we saturate our hearts with the Lord’s Word, it will allow us to counterattack the flaming arrows that the devil likes to use against us. When we don’t protect our hearts like we should using the armor that God gave us, the enemy will find a way to make his way in. That is how unforgiveness is established; it starts with distaste for someone, then that distaste will lead to animosity, then that animosity will turn into bitterness and hate.

It is imperative that we cast down every wicked thought that the devil plants in your mind to prevent these negative emotions from taking root, 2 Corinthians 10:5. What that will do is extinguish that flame before it turns into something that can build a stronghold in your life. Our hearts can be so deceitful because of the fact that we are emotional creatures by nature. That is why we have to guard it from the wiles and schemes of the devil, Ephesians 6:11.

Death and life will always be in the power of your tongue, Proverbs 18:21. We have to be careful what we say and how we say it. The enemy is just waiting for you to come into agreement with the thoughts that he is shooting at your mind because that is what is going to give him legal access to establish footholds. When you speak negatively about people that you feel have done something to you that is unforgiveable, you are doing the opposite of what the Lord wants you to do, Luke 6:28.

God’s forgiveness and God’s grace towards us is the example that He wants us to use when someone causes us inexcusable pain or hurt. The more that your relationship with the Lord is established, the more that you will want to radiate His heart for others in your everyday life. The only way that you are going to be able to do that is if you get into your Word and spend intimate time with Him in prayer and worship. The Holy Spirit will guide you into all truth, John 16:13. So you will know when you are doing something that is outside of God’s will for your life.

Meditate on these verses of scripture pertaining to unforgiveness; it is one of the enemy’s most used and hidden weapons of warfare. It is a door that most Christians leave open time and time again. He never plays fair and will use your vulnerable moments to sneak his way into your life. Do not be ignorant to his devices, 2 Corinthians 2:11, but instead keep your head on a swivel because he is coming like a roaring lion seeking anyone that he can to devour, 1 Peter 5:8.
