Guarding Your Eye Gates-Part 2

Proverbs (2)

How do you keep your eye gates guarded?

The number one way that you are going to keep your eye gates fully guarded is if you keep your eyes pure. What that really means is being cognizant of everything that you watch and look at. Remember your eye gates are the spiritual barrier preventing infiltration at the hands of the enemy.

For example, picture a robber attempting to rob a gated community. He’s going house to house to see if he can find a gate that happened to be unlocked. Then he comes across one that is and that unlocked gate becomes an easy target for the robber to come into that house and take that person’s possessions.

That same scenario pertains to your eye gates. If your wall of defense has been weakened because of the things that you have allowed to infiltrate it, then the chances for the enemy to come in and wreak havoc is highly likely. You become an easy mark for the devil and his demons to begin to implement their plan against you.

The enemy’s kingdom is very organized and structured just like a military is today. They remain posted up to see when they can gain the opportunity to come into your life to create destruction. That is why the Word of God gives us warnings over and over again in regards to the devil and his schemes. His goal has and always will be to kill, steal, and to destroy, John 10:10.

What can someone do to keep their eye gates guarded? The perfect Scriptures that you can meditate on to help prevent your spiritual eyes from growing dim are Galatians 5:16-17. The Apostle Paul writes, “I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.”

Here we can see that the Lord is advising us through Paul how to overcome the lusts of our flesh. It is not the easiest thing to do for most people considering the fact that everywhere that you look the enemy has a trap ready and waiting for you to get ensnared in. He is the prince of power of the air and knows how to devise schemes catered just for you.

As Christians we have the Gift of the Holy Spirit living on the inside of us Who will give you the strength and power to overcome every temptation that the devil throws your direction. That is why the Lord is making it clear to us that we need to walk in His Spirit in order to prevent our eye gates from being penetrated by the enemy.

Walking in the Spirit will require that you spend time with the Holy Spirit (speaking in your prayer language), getting into the Word of God (studying and applying it to your life), and remaining in prayer (incorporating fasting). These are your powerful weapons against all temptation.

I remember when I first got saved and was going through heavy demonic oppression; I didn’t know what was going on with me let along what to do about it. Thank God for the Helper, the Holy Spirit because He led me into all truth, John 16:13. He taught me how to fight the devil back and overcome his plan for my life.

I had to realize that I needed to spend as much time as I could with the Spirit of God, in God’s Word, fasting, and in prayer so that I could remain connected to the Lord and His voice. He would convict me when I was veering off course from the characteristics that I was supposed to be exhibiting as a believer of Jesus Christ.

He will help you build a strong level of defense that will prevent the enemy from penetrating your eye gate, but you have to be willing to do your part. It doesn’t happen overnight but it can be done. Nothing is impossible with the Lord, Luke 1:37. The more of God’s wisdom (the Word of God) that we retain in our thoughts, the more they will begin to naturally manifest in our lives, Romans 12:2.

What will begin to happen is when you are exposed to things that entice the desires of the flesh, your own lusts, and just bad things in general; the Scriptures will begin to counterattack those thoughts. You will struggle to guard the entry points or an open door that the devil can come through without that first line of resistance which is the truth of God, His Word.

The power of God can overcome any oppression that you might be facing. The will of God for our lives is not to live in a state of defeat fighting an adversary that has already been defeated, Colossians 2:14-15. The devil is a liar! He will try to make you believe that you’re too far gone to begin to change, that you can’t break the strongholds that came in because of what you’ve allowed to enter through your eyes, and that God can’t help you…ALL LIES!

We have the authority to take control of our lives casting down all evil thoughts, taming our own lusts, and extinguishing every fiery arrow that the enemy attempts to form against us, but we have to abide by the rules and regulations that the Bible lays out for us.

I go into detail about the spiritual laws of God in my articles: The Spiritual Laws of God-Having an Understanding, The Spiritual Laws of God-The Power of Your Tongue!, The Spiritual Laws of God-The General Principles, The Spiritual Laws of God-Restoration, The Spiritual Laws of God-Poverty Part 1, and The Spiritual Laws of God-Poverty Part 2.

I am going to go over two verses of Scripture that you can meditate on regarding your eye gates:

Proverbs (1)

Proverbs 27:20

“Hell and Destruction are never full; So the eyes of man are never satisfied.”

The book of Proverbs is filled with so much knowledge and wisdom. It was written by King Solomon who had asked the Lord to give him wisdom to lead His people. This particular proverb is powerful because it gives us an idea of just how much death and destruction there is on the Earth. Solomon describes it as something that is never full, meaning that no matter how much devastation there is there can always be more. Unfortunately, this is a direct result of the sin nature that every human being is born with.

In this proverb, King Solomon gives us a comparison: he compares the endless amount of death found in the world to the endless ways the lust of the eyes are unable to be satisfied. This revelation shows us just how much of an effect what you look at can have on a person. That is why it is so important that you make it a point to guard your eye gates.

The devil is considered the prince of the power of the air (Ephesians 2:2) meaning that God has allowed him to have a strong influence on what goes on here on Earth. That is why everywhere you look it seems as if there is an intentional effort made to entice the desires of the eyes. That is because there is! The enemy knows that if our eye gates are not fully guarded they are easy to penetrate.

The level of discernment regarding your spiritual eyes has a direct correlation to how much time you spend in your Word, in prayer, and with the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God is our Helper and is the One that will make sure that you keep your eye gates resilient to the schemes of the enemy, but you have to be in tune with His Voice.

Matthew 5:27-28

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

This passage of Scripture written by Matthew through the leading of the Holy Spirit is making a comparison for us to take heed to. If you are married and are looking at another woman or man with lust, you have already committed adultery in your heart. Powerful! Why would the Lord make this comparison? It really boils down to the condition of your heart.

Proverbs 23:7 describes it perfectly when King Solomon states, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. “Eat and drink!” he says to you, But his heart is not with you.” The Lord is explaining to us through this verse of Scripture that when you allow your selfish ambition, lustful thoughts, and your own desires infiltrate your heart it will affect the way that you think and act.

The devil knows that if he can get you to bypass your logical way of thinking by using your own lusts against you, the chances of you sinning is highly likely. That is why the Lord is so adamant about casting down imaginations and everything that comes against the knowledge of God, 2 Corinthians 10:3-5.

Filtering what you allow yourself to look at is critical for every believer in the Kingdom of God. The more of the world that you have in you, the less effective and powerful you are going to be a soldier for Jesus Christ. Don’t underestimate how much the enemy uses your eye gates as entry points to wreak havoc in your life. We are not to be ignorant of his devices, 2 Corinthians 2:11.

He loves when people say things like “don’t talk about the devil so much” or “if you don’t mess with the devil, he won’t mess with you” that is so far from the truth. It is called spiritual warfare for a reason and it is our duty as Christians to expose the works of darkness, Ephesians 5:11.

I have made it my mission to attempt to spread as much knowledge and awareness to the devil’s schemes in the hopes that it will prevent others from facing the demonic oppression that I once had to endure because of my lack of knowledge when it came to the spiritual realm. We are not fighting against flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:12) we are fighting a powerful adversary that prowls around like a lion looking for someone to devour, 1 Peter 5:8.

Other Important Scriptures to meditate on regarding protecting your eye gates:

  • 1 John 2:15-17 “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.”
  • Colossians 3:5 “Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.”
  • Romans 13:14 “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.”
  • Isaiah 33:15 “He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, He who despises the gain of oppressions, Who gestures with his hands, refusing bribes, Who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed, And shuts his eyes from seeing evil.”

Conclusion

There are so many different ways that the devil comes into our lives in the hopes that he can stop the plan that the Lord has for every one of us. He knows that a Spirit filled Christian that knows who they are in Christ can cause a dent in his kingdom and he cannot stand it! So, he uses tactics like taking advantage of how vulnerable our eyes are and how easily our eye gates can be infiltrated.

We have to make a solid effort to protect the gateways to our eyes so that we do not fall victim to his strategies. It is inevitable; we are going to be exposed to sexual and alluring things in the world, but it is how we handle it when we do that will make the difference. When you are spiritually mature, you aren’t going to just let your eyes wonder to things that you know will damage your spiritual health.

You will understand the repercussions and harm that can be done to a person’s walk with Jesus Christ when you do not safeguard your eyes. When you understand the spiritual realm and how the devil and his kingdom operate, you will see the things of the world in a completely different light.
