Guarding Your Eye Gates-Part 1

What are your Eye Gates?

Your eye gates are the spiritual barriers protecting your eyes and the first line of defense preventing outside attacks from the enemy. Just like a gate to your house would prevent intruders from coming in, your eye gates work the same way. We have to be very careful what we watch because it will have a direct impact on the condition of our soul and spirit. The enemy’s plan for us is to corrupt our minds with desires of the flesh including: lustful thoughts, sexual immorality, selfish ambition, and anything attached to horror because he knows that they are open doors.

1 Peter 5:8 is abundantly clear when Peter states, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” Our enemy is lurking around our house (body or temple) on a regular basis looking for entry points. That is why Peter through the Holy Spirit is letting us know that we are to remain sober and vigilant at all times.

The devil knows your weaknesses and will dangle them in front of you in the hopes that you will fall for the trap. He will use your eye gate to manipulate the way that you think if you do not guard it. How does one go about guarding their eye gates? In order for you to protect the entry point into your eyes, you have to be attentive of the things that you watch.

We have to remember our thought process is shaped and molded by our senses: touch, sight, smell, taste, and hear. Your eyes are one of the main ways that the enemy gains legal access into your life and will completely destroy it if you let him. A lot of Christians lack knowledge when it comes to the spiritual realm and how the devil operates. That is why the Lord is extremely clear when He declares that His people are destroyed because they lack knowledge, Hosea 4:6.

Your knowledge comes straight from the Word of God: our blueprint to life, our Weapon and Sword, our main line of defense against the attacks of the enemy. But, if you aren’t opening up your bible studying, learning, and applying it to your life then the devil already has the upper hand. God’s Word will equip you for any device that the enemy will throw in your direction regardless of how powerful it is.

Remaining in the Word of God is the number one way that you can build up your wall of protection when the enemy comes in like a flood. The book of Proverbs is filled with some powerful Scriptures that you can meditate on regarding protecting your eye gates.

For instance Proverbs 4:20-22 states, “My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh.” Here we can see that the Lord is giving us sound advice: to keep our eyes on His Word. It is what will bring forth life instead of death.

Some of the main ways that the enemy comes into our eye gates:

Pornography: This is one of the most used weapons that the devil uses over and over again to chain and shackle many and I mean many Christians. A lot of people may not see the spiritual implications that this brings but trust and believe pornography will open the door to some really stubborn, harmful, and hard to get rid of demons that will wreak havoc in your life.

Some of the most prevalent ones that come through this open door are the spirits of lust and perversion. The more that you allow pornography into your eye gate, the stronger these kinds of demons can affect your life. Before you know it, you simply cannot control your thoughts. The enemy loves to pervert you mind because he knows that in doing so, it makes it hard to focus on God and to get into the presence of Jesus.

Too much social media: This one tends to get a lot of us into trouble if we aren’t careful. The enemy will use social media to soak up all of your time. I mean before you know it, you’ve been on your phone for hours on end and don’t even realize it. Think about it, you have to literally bow down to look at your phone in the first place. We need to make sure that we do not make our phones an idol.

If you are a Christian then the Holy Spirit lives on the inside of you and He will convict you when you are spending too much time on social media and not enough time with Him and in your Word. The internet is filled with things that are designed to corrupt your spiritual health. You have no line of defense if you are consumed with worldly knowledge but you are spiritually anemic; the enemy will take full advantage of your spiritual weakness!

Horror Films: This is another device that the devil uses on us over and over again because of how entertaining they are. The problem is when you are engaging in something that the enemy created, you are giving him the legal right to come into your life and invade your space. Have you ever watched a horror movie and then immediately afterward been consumed with fear and anxiety? That doesn’t just happen.

Satan and his minions are just waiting for an opportunity to kill, steal, and destroy you, John 10:10. By you not protecting your eye gate, you are dimming your spiritual eyes preventing you from seeing when the enemy is coming. Before you know it, you are filled with anxiety, can’t sleep, and you are overcome with fear and can’t understand why. It is because of what you have allowed to come in through your eye gates.

I am going to go over two Scriptures pertaining to your eye gates that you can meditate on:

Luke 1134

Luke 11:34

“The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness.”

This verse of Scripture is Jesus talking to a crowd that was gathered around Him listening intently to what He was saying. He was explaining to them that your eye is the entry point to your body and it can either illuminate His light or it can radiate darkness. It all boils down to what you are allowing into your eye gate.

The will of God for every believer of Jesus Christ is that we are exuding His light at all times; unashamed, unapologetically, and on display for all to see, Luke 11:33. Your light should shine so brightly that even if others wanted to dim it, they wouldn’t be able to. We are a representation of Jesus Christ here on earth for all of those that don’t know Him.

The Lord goes into great detail about this light in Matthew 5:14-16 when Matthew states, “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

In order for the light of Christ to shine through you in a significant way, you have to make sure that you are exhibiting His characteristics. If your eye gate has been infiltrated, it is going to be difficult to refrain from behaviors that don’t honor the Lord. The enemy knows that and wants to make sure that he entices you in any way that he can so that he can build strong holds against you.

When your eyes are not pure, it is very challenging to tame your own lusts and desires that do not line up with the Word of God. That is why the Lord is stating in the last part of Luke 11:34, “…But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness.” The best way that you can combat this level of spiritual warfare is to get into your Bible day and night.

The Holy Spirit is the One that has the ability to guide you into all truth (John 16:13) and He will help you break those demonic strongholds. The Word of God is your double-edged Sword and can slice through any tactic or scheme that the enemy will try to throw in your direction. It is about the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2) and no matter how far gone you think your state of mind is the great power of the Lord can change it.

Matthew1

Matthew 18:9

“And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire.”

In this particular passage of Scripture, Jesus is having a conversation with His disciples regarding the danger of letting sin enter into your life. There are several different ways that you can violate the Lord’s rules and regulations on how to live your life as a believer of Jesus Christ. I go into details on some of the primary ones in my articles: Spiritual Oppression-The Dangers of Open Doors to the Enemy-Part 1, Spiritual Oppression-The Dangers of Open Doors to the Enemy-Part 2, and Spiritual Oppression-The Dangers of Open Doors to the Enemy-Part 3.

This powerful verse is extremely telling because the Lord is letting us know how important it is to guard what you allow into your eye gate. He wouldn’t have mentioned it if it wasn’t one of the most prevalent ways that sin enters into your life. He goes so far as to say that if your eye is sinning against you, just cut it completely out.

In other words rather than risk the chance of going to hell for eternity it is more beneficial for you to get rid of your eye all together. The enemy makes it his mission to pervert your mind and the way that you think and he uses the things that you watch as one of his most used devices. The images that you see don’t just go away, they are stored away.

One thing that we do not realize is that our subconscious mind is storing up every single thing that we look at and listen to. It accounts for about 95% of the functioning of your brain. It has a direct impact on the way that you act, speak, and think. That is why the more of the knowledge of God that you digest, the more you begin to change your personal attributes to line up with those of Christ.

On the contrary, the more you consume the things of the world the more you will want to fulfill the desires of your flesh. Galatians 5:19-21 gives us a description of exactly what that looks like. The Apostle Paul writes, “Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

Believe it or not what you are allowing yourself to look at has a direct correlation with the intensity of these desires. The more that you partake in any of the works of the flesh listed above the more of an advantage the devil has against you. He knows that all he needs to do is have you come into agreement with these adverse actions and emotions which will allow him to gain legal access into your life to create chaos.

Conclusion

One of the main ways that the devil strategizes against Christians is to ensure that he keeps us tied up and bound by the things that we are allowing into our eye gates. He knows that if he can dim the light of Christ that is within you then you won’t be as effective in the Kingdom of God. You will be so wrapped up in your own sin that it will be difficult to set the captives free as the Lord commands us to, Isaiah 61:1.

The enemy will use your social media choices, the preference of movies that you watch, and other things that you know that you shouldn’t be watching against you. The Lord gives us all the knowledge that we need to prevent the devil from attacking us but a lot of us don’t take the time to learn and apply the Scriptures to our lives.

The Word of God states that His people are destroyed because they lack knowledge (Hosea 4:6) yet we still choose our way of doing things. This is what gets us caught up and bound unable to get set free. I had to learn the hard way that when you go against God’s principles and guidelines, you are leaving yourself vulnerable for the enemy to come in to steal, kill, and destroy, John 10:10.
