Positive Quote for the Week-Be mindful of Your Words

“Never allow your tongue to become a weapon; you don’t know how deep words can cut!” Erica Willis

One of the most dangerous weapons that we can use against others is actually attached to our bodies, our tongues. We can use our words to encourage, motivate, inspire, and positively influence; or we can use our words to discourage, demean, slice, and cut. The Lord is very clear about how He wants us to speak to others, especially our loved ones.

One verse in particular is Matthew 15:11, “Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.” Here we can see that the Lord is letting us know what matters to Him is not what we eat but how we speak. Why is it so important? The Lord never looks at outward appearances but He is always analyzing the condition of hearts.

We have to watch what we say because words can create long-term damage depending on how we use them. Imagine having someone that you love putting you down on a consistent basis, spewing out nothing but negativity and hatred towards you. If you are around it long enough you will begin to believe what they are saying to be the truth.

This is especially the case when you are speaking to children. They are so vulnerable and their minds have no way to filter out the adverse communication. They see their parents, teachers, and other adults as their examples, so when they are spoken to in such a vile manner it is literally like cutting them with a knife.

We have to make sure that we choose our words wisely. If you are having a bad day, angry, or frustrated take a moment to catch your breath and think before you speak. You really don’t know how deep your words can cut until it is too late and it is just not worth the repercussions!

Some Scriptures on watching how you speak are:

  • Matthew 12:34 “Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”
  • Proverbs 15:28 “The heart of the righteous studies how to answer, But the mouth of the wicked pours forth evil.”
  • Proverbs 23:23 “Whoever guards his mouth and tongue Keeps his soul from troubles.”
  • Psalm 34:13 “Keep your tongue from evil, And your lips from speaking deceit.”
  • Proverbs 18:21 “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.”
  • Proverbs 17:28 “Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; When he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive.”
  • Proverbs 12:18 “There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword, But the tongue of the wise promotes health.”
