Positive Thinking-Get Your Week Started Off Right!
This Week’s Message:
Choose love above hate
Love is one of the most powerful emotions that a person can radiate. The Lord is absolute love (1 John 4:8) and that is demonstrated throughout the entire Word of God. Loving someone begins to become difficult when: you’ve been hurt, when you’ve been offended in some way, when you’ve been taken advantage of, when you’ve been cheated on or abused, and so many other reasons. It is in those moments that the damaging emotion of hatred begins to peak its ugly head.
It is so hard to show love to someone that wants nothing more than to watch you fail. The only way that you can overcome those negative feelings that want to develop in your heart is if you allow the Holy Spirit to do a work in you to help you transform your way of thinking. It’s about renewing your entire mind-set, Romans 12:2. This was one of the most difficult things for me to do when I was a new believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. I couldn’t understand why I had to show love towards someone that was mean, nasty, and intentionally malicious.
The Lord had to deal with me on the condition of my heart. The Word of God makes it significantly clear on how we are to treat the people that have offended us:
- Matthew 6:14-15 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”
- Mark 11:25 “And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.”
- Luke 6:37 “Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.”
When you have the ability to quickly forgive, it prevents any adverse emotions from developing in your heart that can lead to strongholds. I learned over the years walking with the Lord that life is spiritual and when you can see things in that lens it will change how you handle situations. The person that is exhibiting that spiteful attitude, saying those offensive things, and being disrespectful is not that person but the demonic influence behind that person using them to get under your skin.
This is why the Lord is so adamant about His children choosing to show love above hate. Hatred opens the door to the enemy inviting other adverse emotions that will eventually affect you mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically. One way that I have been able to overcome strong emotions that want me to retaliate when I am offended is by getting into the Lord’s Word. I also bring every negative though that the enemy tries to plant into my mind into captivity, 2 Corinthians 10:4-5.
Use this week to take an inventory of your heart. If someone were to describe you to someone else would words like loving, caring, understanding, compassionate, or thoughtful be included in that description? If not, ask yourself why?
Below I am going to list some helpful scriptures that you can meditate on regarding love!
Colossians 3:13-14
“bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.”
Here we can see that the Apostle Paul through the Holy Spirit is giving us direction regarding how to forgive one another. He goes on to say that the thing that is going to be the bond that will bind you together with the ones that have offended, harmed, or wronged you is love. If you really take a step back and think about it, what can a person that is being extremely hateful do towards someone that is showing them nothing but love?
It will actually make them look at themselves with the realization of just how vile they truly are. As the salt of this world (Matthew 5:13) and representatives of the Lord Jesus Christ we have to be willing to radiate His characteristics as often as we possibly can. One of the main things that describe the Lord is love; He is love, 1 John 4:16. We have to be willing to view others how He would view them versus how we choose to.
It doesn’t mean that you are not entitled to be upset or feel offended when someone comes at you crazy, but you don’t want to marinate in that space. Any time that I feel any negative emotion rising up in me that I know is not beneficial, I will extinguish it right then, 2 Corinthians 10:4-5. The longer that you allow it to resonate in your spirit, the easier it is for the enemy to come in and make that negative emotion 10 times worse!
1 John 4:16
“And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.”
In this verse of Scripture John is explaining to the believers of the Lord the importance of love. God is absolute love (the word used here is agape). The more time that you spend with the Lord, the more His love will naturally radiate from your heart; there is no way of getting around it. That is why John is stating that …”he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.”
You will begin to demonstrate the positive characteristics that the Holy Spirit will begin to bring out of you: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, and faithfulness, Galatians 5:22. It will most definitely take some effort on your part but when you can strive to choose love above hate, so many aspects of your life will change for the better.
One of the things that really helped me develop more positive personal traits was spending time speaking in my heavenly language. You are communing directly with the Father through the Holy Spirit. It’s a love that comes over you that is truly indescribable; you can’t help but want to show that same kind of love to others. The more that you allow the Spirit of the Lord to move in your life, the more you will be able to hear that still small voice letting you know when you are doing something that is not pleasing in the eyes of God. That includes unforgiveness, anger, hate, jealousy, malice, animosity or any other negative characteristic contrary to fruits of the Spirit.
1 Peter 4:8
“And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.”
In this passage of Scripture Peter is explaining another side of love that Christians should display. He explains it as having fervent love or a love that doesn’t cease. In other words when someone does something that doesn’t sit well with you; it doesn’t give us the right to treat them in a vindictive manner.
We are all going to have moments when we say or do something that is offensive or upsets another person. We are all imperfect people serving a perfect God. We all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 3:23. We need to extend the same grace to others as we would want extended to us.
The second part of this verse is meaning that we need to refrain from having a judgmental spirit towards others in their vulnerable moments. Instead of condemning them when they fall into some form of sin, we need to be there for them showing love and compassion in their time of need. You choosing to love on them, pray for them, share the Word of God with them instead of pointing your finger of judgment at them can be the one thing that they need to get them out of that negative space.
Sharing God’s love with others is another way to introduce them to the Lord Jesus Christ. When you can show someone kindness, sympathy, and grace regardless of how negative they may be acting towards you or where they are in life, it is a powerful thing. It’s about not categorizing them with their sin but instead viewing them as a person needing to be understood and that is the kind of love that Christ exhibits towards us!
This week take an inventory of your heart. Do you display the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, Galatians 5:22-23. Or do you radiate the fruits of the flesh: hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, Galatians 5:20? That is the question and it is one that only you can truly answer!
