The Holy Spirit-The Spirit of Power, Love, and a Sound Mind!

Holy Spirit-power love sound mind

What does 2 Timothy 1:7 Mean?

2 Timothy 1:7 states, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

A little bit of background on the second letter written to Timothy by the Apostle Paul; he is writing this letter to his fellow believer in Christ Timothy whom he calls his beloved son, 2 Timothy 1:2.  He is giving him encouragement as he reminds him of his sincere faith that seemed to have been passed down from his grandmother Lois, to his mother Eunice, and now onto him. As we get to 2 Timothy 1:7 we can conclude that Timothy was battling a spirit of timidity or a demonic spirit that was overwhelming him with fear.

This tormenting spirit appeared to have been preventing him from walking in the Lord’s Holy calling for his life. Paul also expresses to him, “Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands, 2 Timothy 1:6. He then makes it clear to him that the Lord did not give us the spirit of cowardice, but He provides us with power, love, and sound wisdom, 2 Timothy 1:7.

Timothy’s genuine faith was being tested as the power of the enemy was coming against him in the hopes that he would stop him from doing the will of God. How familiar does that sound? It happens time and time again; as soon as you accept the Lord Jesus Christ into your heart as your Lord and Savior the devil uses every tactic that he can to try to prevent you from moving forward in Christ, spreading the glory of God, and advancing in the Kingdom of God.

That is why the Holy Spirit of God is so vital to every believer who is walking with the Lord Jesus Christ. There is no way that we can overcome our adversary the devil in our own strength; we need the power of God which is the Holy Spirit to defeat the enemy. Jesus didn’t even begin His earthly ministry until He was empowered by the Holy Ghost, Mark 1:1-12 and John 1:32. The disciples did not begin their ministry until they were filled with the Holy Spirit in the upper room as instructed by Jesus, Acts 1:4-5.

The Spirit of God is a gift from our Heavenly Father, Acts 1:4-5. He plays so many roles in the lives of every Christian living for the Lord. The Word of God provides us with so many verses of Scripture scattered throughout the Holy Bible regarding the help of the Lord’s Spirit. I am going to go into more detail as far as what it means to have power, love, and a sound mind provided through the Holy Spirit in regards to the life of a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Power

Power

The Spirit of the Lord is referred to as a dove representing purity, innocence, and gentleness Mark 1:10. He is soft and considerate and will never force Himself upon you but gives you the room to have your free will. However, He is the one that is going to give you the boldness, confidence, and the strength to live every day fighting in the spiritual battle that you will be engaged in daily. I know for me, the Holy Spirit is the One that was leading me, directing me, and teaching me how to overcome the powerful forces of the devil and his demonic kingdom. He is the Spirit of Power that will guide you into all truth (John 16:13) making sure that you don’t go in the wrong direction.

As Christians, we are going to face challenging and fearful situations just as Timothy did during his walk with the Lord. That is why the Holy Spirit is an absolute necessity for us to have the fierceness and self-assurance to face the devil when he comes to steal, kill, and destroy, 1 Peter 5:8. It isn’t a matter of if he will, but when.

Some scriptures that demonstrate the necessity for the Spirit of God to aid in giving us power to walk in God’s calling for our lives are:

Zechariah 4:6 “So he answered and said to me: “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the Lord of hosts.”

Here we can see that the Lord is making a clear distinction through the Prophet Zechariah about how the Israelites would have the ability to rebuild His temple. The reconstruction wasn’t going to happen within their own might but would have to be done through the strength of the Lord’s Spirit giving them the power needed to complete the temple despite heavy opposition. Zechariah was given a vision from the Lord of exactly how this was going to come to pass and it happened precisely as the Lord said it would.

It is the same today for every believer of God. You are going to have times in your life when you feel like the enemy and his army has you completely surrounded, but those are the moments that you need to rely on the Holy Spirit to give you the power to make it through. Trust me when I tell you that there is no way that you can do it in your own strength or your own might. If you approach your life as a Christian with the mentality that you “have it all under control,” the enemy will chew you up and spit you out.

I learned this lesson the hard way but as I began to understand the role that the Holy Spirit played in my life; I started to lean on Him and His power to guide me through the trials and tribulations that came my way. It doesn’t matter what situation you are facing, the Holy Spirit has the ability to help you overcome. I was in a demonic pit with no end in sight and He gave me the power to fight back and reclaim my life out of the hands of the devil.

We can never underestimate His miraculous power:

  • He is the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead and is now living inside of us, Romans 8:11.
  • He is the same Spirit that the Lord told Ezekiel that He would place in him and he would come to life, Ezekiel 37:14.
  • His is the same Spirit that Jesus made sure His disciples waited for, the spiritual gift of God, a power from on high, Luke 24:49.

He will bring scriptures to your remembrance, warn you of people that want to cause you harm, and He will reveal to you open doors that need to be closed that are giving the enemy legal access into your life. He is never going to lead you astray and will reveal to you the True Word of the Lord, John 16:13. He is your Helper (John 14:16) that you most definitely need to withstand the wiles of your adversary, the devil!

Acts 1:8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

The book of Acts in jam-packed with knowledge pertaining to the tremendous power and necessity of the Holy Spirit. In this verse of Scripture Jesus is explaining to His disciples about the importance of receiving the gift of God, the Holy Spirit. He goes into more detail letting them know that the Spirit of the Lord would give them the boldness to be witnesses to others regarding His ministry. Jesus was giving them instructions that they were to try to reach as many people in as many places as they possibly could bringing them into the knowledge of eternal life through Christ Jesus.

The Holy Spirit plays that same role in our lives today. He gives us the bravery, fortitude, and confidence to speak to others about Jesus and His amazing love, mercy, and saving grace. The Holy Spirit will always bring glory to the Lord and the Lord alone; nobody else deserves His glory. The Lord’s Spirit will give us the courage to share our testimony, the love of Jesus Christ, and the Gospel of the grace of God with others.

When the Lord first laid it on my heart to post inspirational messages to others online, I’m not going to lie, I was a little hesitant. But then I had to really check myself, how could I not want to share Jesus Christ with the entire World after all that He had done for me? I began to post as often as I was led to. Then the Lord began to place it in my heart to start sharing spoken messages or what people call a “spoken word” in front of crowds of people! Now, I was really hesitant!

I was fearful to speak in front of large groups to begin with but the Lord was nudging me to share my personal testimony through my written poems to groups of people! What!! Let me tell you, I would shake prior to every spoken word that I was about to deliver, knots would be in my stomach, and I would be overcome with anxiousness. I knew it was the enemy trying to stop me from walking in the purpose that God had for my life.

However, when I walked up in front of all of those people, the Holy Spirit would completely take over and I was able to deliver my message with power, confidence, self-assurance, and clarity! It was nothing but the Lord giving me the Power to do what He had told me to do. He was with me the entire time!

The enemy would love to silence your voice and prevent you from sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ along with your testimony of our Lord and what He has done in your life. If you are struggling in that area, just ask the Holy Spirit to give you the courage and the fierceness to be a witness for the Lord Jesus. He will help you show up and show out!

love-

Love

There is one thing that is completely clear and that is that God is absolute love. 1 John 4:16 describes His love beautifully when John states, “And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.” The word love used here regarding God’s love is the Greek word agape meaning pure love. Another place that the Lord’s love is perfectly written is in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

We can gain somewhat of an idea with these two verses of Scripture the magnitude of God’s love for us and His pure heart! A lot of people have a vacancy in their hearts that only the Lord can truly fill. So what ends up happening is they will search for that void in other things like multiple relationships, drugs, false religions, and many other places in order to fulfill an emptiness that only God’s love can occupy.

One of the functions of the Holy Spirit is to pour God’s love into our hearts. If you have ever been baptized with the Spirit of God with the evidence of speaking with other tongues, it is a complete love that is poured over you from your head to your feet. It is literally indescribable. You can’t help but to weep and just bask in the presence of the Lord.

That is why praise and worship is important because it gives you that intimate time with just you and the Lord where you can release what is in your heart without restraint. I know there have been times I have been praying in my Heavenly language, praising, and thanking God and I am entirely consumed with pure absolute love. He is love!

I am going to highlight some Scriptures that will show you more in depth the different ways that the Holy Spirit aids in revealing God’s amazing love!

Romans 5:5 “Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”

One of the most difficult things to go through as believers of Jesus Christ is the pruning process. We are God’s workmanship (Ephesians 2:10) and a constant work in progress as we strive every single day to be more and more like the Lord Jesus Christ. During this growing stage He has to carve out those nasty characteristics that have created a barrier between you and Him.

The Bible tells us in James 1:2-3, “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.” During the moments of trials and testing we know that everything that happens to those that love the Lord will work itself out for our good, Matthew 18:18. God is not a man that He should lie (Numbers 23:19) and the promise of God is that He will never leave you nor forsake you, Hebrews 13:5.

When we feel like we are going through things that are extreme and seem too hard to bear, the Holy Spirit will remind you of God’s love. When we are in the middle of the storm it can appear like the Lord has turned His back on you or is allowing you to go through it alone. That is so far from the truth, David describes the Lord’s devotion to us in Psalm 139:8 when he states, “If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.”

As we break down this passage we can see that God will be with you through your trial, through your tribulation, through your test, and will even follow you to the pit of hell if He needs to. That is how much He loves His children. When you feel like you are drowning and the devil has you defeated the Spirit of God will lift up a standard against him, Isaiah 59:19.

John 3:34 “For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure.”

Because of the Lord’s death, burial, and resurrection, we have been blessed with the free gift of the Holy Spirit. Before this time, the Spirit of God was not living on the inside of the believers of God. Going back to this verse of Scripture that I am highlighting in the book of John, we can see that the Lord is revealing to us that He has given us His Spirit without measure or without limit.

This is extremely significant because now we have the Holy Spirit as our personal guide: giving us direction, discernment, pouring out the Lord’s love, and convicting us when we are doing something contrary to God’s will for our lives. One way that you can tell if the Spirit of God is transforming your life is if you are displaying the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, Galatians 5:22.

Notice how the first characteristic highlighted in the list of fruits by the Apostle Paul in the book of Galatians is love. The Lord is extremely clear that we are to radiate love, speak with love, and react in love.

Here are just some of the verses of Scripture pertaining to how we are to love:

  • Matthew 22:37 “Jesus said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.”
  • Matthew 22:39 “And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
  • 1 Corinthians 13:4 “Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up.”
  • 1 John 4:19 “We love Him because He first loved us.”
  • 1 Corinthians 13:13 “And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”

The Holy Spirit is the One that is able to transform your heart into one that has the ability to exhibit love without reservation. However, you have to be willing to listen to that still small voice, that nudge in your spirit when you are out of line, and you have to get into the Word of God so that He has verses of Scripture that He can bring to your remembrance when He needs to.

Sound mind

Sound Mind

One of the main ways that the enemy attempts to attack us is in our minds. He will throw fiery arrows in your direction in the hopes that they will create strongholds and open doorways allowing him to come into your life and destroy it. The Holy Spirit plays a vital role in helping the believers of the Lord Jesus Christ keep a sound mind or a mind with sound judgment.

You best believe the devil is going to try everything in his power to alter your thoughts. He will try to give you the spirit of fear, anxiety, confusion, depression, and every other negative spirit you can think of to prevent you from having sound judgment. That is why the Apostle Peter tells us in 1 Peter 5:8, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” We are to remain clear-minded and watchful setting our minds and hearts on the Lord and His Word daily.

We are privileged to have the Holy Spirit dwelling in us meaning that we have the power to overcome our carnal mind which is not pleasing to God, Romans 8:6-8. The way that the Lord’s Spirit can work in your life to help you mature spiritually is if you read your Bible, study it, and apply it to your life. Below I am going to go over some bible verses pertaining to the Holy Spirit aiding Christians in producing a sound mind.

Ephesians 4:22-23 “that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind.”

When you become a Christian, you become a new creature; old things are passed away and all things have become new, 2 Corinthians 5:17. So what that means is that you should no longer want to have any association with the way that you used to be as your former self. The Apostle Paul is speaking to the Church at Ephesus about the renewal of the spirit in their mind. The reason that this is reiterated in multiple places throughout Scripture is because the warfare is always going to be in your mind.

Once you become a believer of Jesus Christ don’t think for one second that the enemy is just going to go on about his merry way and let you go without a fight. He is going to war for your soul and the first place that he is coming after is your thought process. It is a battle and you will experience spiritual warfare as a new Christian and throughout your walk with the Lord Jesus Christ.

The enemy will consistently try to find ways to drag you back into your old lifestyle. He will even use others around you that you used to drink, smoke, and party with as bait. Do not get discouraged, the Holy Spirit is with you every step of the way washing you, cleansing you, and renewing you through the Word of God, John 17:17.

However, it will be difficult for Him to do that if you are not even opening up your Bible. The more Word of God you have in you, the more freedom you are going to have because you will have arsenal stored up ready to combat the enemy and his demons.

Romans 12:2 “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

When I gave my life to the Lord Jesus Christ it was difficult for me to understand the need for full transformation. I knew that I loved the Lord with all of my heart and wanted to serve Him with all of me, but there were some things that I still wanted to cling onto. I didn’t understand why I couldn’t watch certain movies, go to certain places, or participate in certain activities. I couldn’t comprehend why I had to read my Word daily, fast consistently, and pray diligently.

I was a “babe” in Christ or what you would call an infant. I was drinking milk and was unskilled in the Word of God, Hebrews 5:13. The Holy Spirit had to transform my way of thinking through the Lord’s Word. After spending time in the Bible, studying to show myself approved, and applying the Word of God to my life I began to grow spiritually. I had advanced to eating solid food having wise discretion and discerning the difference between good and evil, Hebrews 5:14.

Now I completely saturate myself in the Word of God as He leads and guides me into all truth, John 16:13. As Christians we can’t just talk any kind of way, we can’t act just any kind of way, and we cannot just participate in everything that the world participates in. That is why in this verse of Scripture that I have highlighted states, “And do not be conformed to this world….”

We have to separate ourselves from the things of the world and be the example for the Lord so that we can do great things for His Kingdom. In order for us to be able to set ourselves apart, we have to be willing to renew our minds with God’s help which is the Holy Spirit. It is going to be challenging because you do have to literally die to your old self daily, but it can be done. Make the decision to want to live wholeheartedly and completely for the Lord Jesus Christ and never look back, it will be the best decision that you will ever make!
