Power of Prayer (Praying in your Heavenly Prayer Language)
What is the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?
In order to understand the baptism of the Holy Spirit, we need to understand how the Holy Spirit is introduced in the life of every believer. The moment that you accept Jesus Christ as you Lord and Savior you are saved. Romans 10:9-10 states, “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
At that moment of salvation, you receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit that will live on the inside of you. The Word of God goes into detail in 1 Corinthians 3:16, “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” Another example is in 2 Timothy 1:14 “That good thing which was committed to you, keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.”
The final example in God’s Word regarding the Holy Spirit dwelling in you is in Romans 8:9, “But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.” Here we can see that the Apostle Paul is making it known that if the Spirit of God is not living on the inside of you, you are not a child of God. These are some examples of what it means to have the Holy Spirit living on the inside of you.
Now the baptism of the Holy Spirit is an entirely different experience. The baptism or infilling of the Holy Spirit is a complete immersion and overflow of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in new tongues. There are many people that confuse speaking in tongues for edification to the body of Christ and for edification to a believer’s personal walk with Jesus Christ. These are two completely different things.
I am going to highlight Scriptures in God’s Word pertaining to the baptism of the Holy Spirit for a believer’s own spiritual life.
Acts 2:1-4 “When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
To put these verses from the New Testament into perspective we have to include the words that Jesus gave His disciples prior to this upper room experience. Acts 1:4-5 states, “And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
Cleary we can see that the Lord is giving them a command to wait for the gift of the Holy Spirit that had already been promised to them. They did just that and as they all waited in the upper room, on the day of Pentecost (Jewish Feast), the sound of a mighty wind came into the room and entirely consumed it.
The word used for “wind” is the Greek word pnoē which also means breath of life. The Holy Spirit is the breath of life. As we can see in the text, as the power of the Spirit baptized the disciples in the upper room, the evidence of the baptism was them speaking in tongues or the manifestation of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit was giving the utterance and it was not their own language that they were speaking.
Acts 19:1-5 “And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John’s baptism.” Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.” When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.”
There is a whole lot to unpack in these passages of Scripture stated by Luke. Here we can see a conversation between the Apostle Paul and a group of disciples who were already believers of Jesus Christ. We know by the Scriptures that I referenced earlier that they already have the Holy Spirit living on the inside of them. So, what that means is that Paul is speaking of something more than just receiving the Spirit of God at salvation; He is referencing the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
We can see this mentioned again in Matthew 3:11, “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” John the Baptist is distinguishing the baptism in water verses the baptism in the Holy Spirit. These are two distinct events that every believer of Jesus Christ should want to pursue.
I have articles that cover the Holy Spirit that you can look into: The Holy Spirit-The Spirit of Power, Love, and a Sound Mind!, The Holy Spirit-Our Helper, and The Holy Spirit-Our Prayer Partner!
Once you are baptized in the Holy Spirit, you will be able to develop your private prayer language as you exercise your spiritual tongues. See it as a muscle, just like you need to work out your muscles on a regular basis; this form of prayer needs to be worked out in the same way.
I am going to go over some of the ways that developing your heavenly prayer language will benefit your walk with the Lord Jesus Christ. One thing that we can never underestimate is the fact that you are being baptized with the Holy Spirit and FIRE!
Releases the Helper
John 16:13 “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.”
When you pray in your heavenly prayer language, you are connecting to the Holy Spirit in a supernatural way. He is the One that is able to reveal God’s Word to you in such a manner that will guide, lead, and direct you into all truth. Here we can see in this verse of Scripture that John is disclosing to us that the Holy Spirit will tell you things to come.
In order for that to happen, you have to remain plugged up and connected to Him so that you can hear His voice when He is speaking to you. Spending time in God’s presence will not only help you with your own spiritual growth but it will also help you establish your perfect prayers to the Lord.
John 14:26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”
Here we have another example of how the ministry of the Holy Spirit aids the lives of every believer. John is explaining that He is the one that will bring Scripture to your remembrance. I encourage you to pray out passages out of the Word of God and incorporate it with speaking in your heavenly language; you will be amazed at how much you will grow spiritually and how powerful your prayer life will become.
I am speaking from experience. I can remember how spiritually anemic I was before I got filled with the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in other tongues. The moment I got filled with the Lord’s Spirit, there was no mistaking the fact that I was also filled with His fire.
I was able to speak to others about the Gospel boldly, speak my spoken word fiercely, and my understanding of the Bible was on a whole different level. The will of God for us is to experience His free gift to the absolute fullest! Why wouldn’t someone not want to receive the baptism of His Spirit; it will change your life completely!
Builds a Guard Against Deception
1 John 2:26-27 “These things I have written to you concerning those who try to deceive you. But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.”
As you spend time with the Lord praying in your heavenly language, the Holy Spirit within you will naturally begin to become more prominent. You will be able to hear His voice a lot easier than you would had you not taken the time out to spend dedicated time in prayer. This is how you are able to build a strong guard against deception of any kind.
For example, let’s say that you are visiting a church for the very first time and you hear preaching that doesn’t sit well in your spirit. That feeling is the Holy Spirit letting you know that what you are listening to is false teaching and that you need to stop listening to it. God’s will for our lives is that we remain protected and He has given us all of the tools needed to do so. It is then up to us whether or not we utilize them wisely.
Keep in mind, the Holy Spirit is the Author (2 Timothy 3:16) and the Interpreter (2 Peter 1:20) of God’s Word and He is living on the inside of every believer. What better teacher and guard against deception can there be? We need to make it a point to take time out of each day praying our perfect prayers because that is how you build the Power and Fire on the inside of you!
Provides Faith
Jude 20 “But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit.”
Here we can see that Jude is explaining one way that you can grow your faith in the Lord and that is by praying in your heavenly language. He also goes into detail about how our dedicated time with the Holy Spirit will help us build up our holy (pure and moral) faith to fight against the ungodliness of this world and people who are unbelievers not filled with the Spirit of God.
As time gets closer and closer to the coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we are going to be faced with more wickedness than this world has ever known. If you look around right now you can see such an infiltration of the devil’s plots and schemes permeating every aspect of life.
Jude reminds us of the Power of praying in the Holy Spirit. It is designed for your own personal edification and it is your distinct prayer language. Speaking in tongues is praying the most perfect prayers that you could ever pray. It is literally the power of God.
Jude also discloses in Jude 17, “But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ.” The Holy Spirit is the One that will bring all things that the Lord has ever said in His Word to our remembrance, John 14:26. We should never take for granted the gift of the Holy Spirit that has been afforded to us by the shed blood of Jesus Christ on the cross at Calvary. That is why praying in your heavenly language is so vital; it connects you to the Source that can give you power to live your life victoriously.
Conclusion
When you are praying in tongues you don’t understand what you are saying but God does. They are the most perfect prayers that you could ever pray. Praying in your heavenly language unleashes your Helper (the Holy Spirit), helps you build a guard against deception, helps build your faith, and so much more. We often undervalue the Spirit of God but He is the One that is going to aid you in getting those prayers to your Heavenly Father.
The fact of the matter is, He knows exactly what you need at the moment even when you don’t. When we pray on our own, we can leave out things, pray amiss, or neglect the areas that we need help in the most. As you begin to grow your intimacy with the Lord you will start to see areas in your life shift for your good.
How does one build intimacy with God? That is built in your prayer closet: praying in your heavenly language, praying and proclaiming God’s Word, giving the Lord all of the praise, honor, and glory that He deserves. God is Spirit and true worshipers worship Him in Spirit and Truth, John 4:24. Never neglect your spirit man. Just like a person needs to work out their body at the gym, in order to gain strength spiritually you need to set aside dedicated time specifically for you and God in prayer!
