The Holy Spirit-Our Prayer Partner!

Do we really need the Holy Spirit to help us pray?

The Holy Spirit plays an essential role in our prayer life as believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. The fact of the matter is that we are not always going to know how to pray, what to pray, or when to pray. That is why the Spirit of God is so important because He is the One that is going to help us establish powerful and effective prayers. He is also the One that helps us transform our hearts and renew our minds. This is vital and the Lord makes it clear in His model prayer for us which is also the most popular prayer used, Matthew 6:9-13:

“Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”

We can see that the Lord is giving us clear direction in reference to coming to Him in prayer including forgiving others as well as the importance of not being led into temptation. The Holy Spirit will be the One that will prompt our hearts to forgive the people that have done us wrong. Galatians 5:22-25 describes the fruits of the Spirit in complete detail, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” These are the kind of characteristics that should begin to radiate out of your heart if you yield to the Lord’s Spirit.

He is also the One that will aid us when it comes to staying away from temptation by the enemy. He is the One that is going to help us transform our thought process through the Word of God, 2Corinthians 3:17-18. The Lord does not look at our outward appearance; He could care less what latest car you drive, if you’re wearing designer clothes, or if your hair is done to perfection. No, He looks at your heart. What is your heart looking like?

We have to come to our Heavenly Father with the right heart posture when we approach Him in prayer. There are so many things that can create barriers preventing your prayers from being effective. That is why it is crucial that you remain in tune with the Holy Spirit because He will reveal to you the things within your heart that need to be changed in order for your prayers to successfully reach God.

I am going to go over some verses of Scriptures that can help in understanding the role that the Holy Spirit plays in our life in regards to prayer:

When you don't know what to pray

The Holy Spirit helps us when we don’t know what to pray:

Romans 8:26-27 “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”

In these passages of Scripture, the Apostle Paul is writing to the Church at Rome and is explaining to them how the Spirit of God is the One that will help in times of weakness. He suffered a lot of persecution as a believer of Jesus Christ and knew what they would be facing. God’s Word explains how the Lord’s strength is made perfect in our weakness, 2 Corinthians 12:9.

As Christians, there are going to be trials and tribulations that we will have to face that literally feel like they are going to take you out. You are in so much pain, distress, anguish, and misery that you can barely collect your thoughts let alone pray coherently. That is when the Holy Spirit will step in and take over with wordless groans which you may not understand but your Heavenly Father in heaven will. It is a perfect intercession, a needed prayer that will line up directly with the will of God for your life pertaining to your situation.

I know there have been times in my life when I am on my knees crying out to God, but I am so distraught that I cannot find the right words to say. It’s in those moments that you need the help of the Holy Spirit to intercede on your behalf ensuring that the right prayer will be sent directly to the Father. The book of Romans also describes how the Spirit of God dwells in us, Romans 8:9. So He is going to know exactly what we need when life seems like it is just too much to bear!

The main thing that you want to keep in mind is being sensitive to the Holy Spirit at all times. He is gentle and will not force Himself upon you so keeping that constant intimacy with Him on a daily basis will help you stay completely in tune with Him. When you don’t know what to say, let Him pray for you.  Not only will your prayer be more powerful, it will help you release all of the hurt and pain that has built up inside because of the trials and tribulations of life.

Praying the Word

The Holy Spirit helps us pray with power:

Ephesians 3:20 “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.”

It is extremely clear in this verse of Scripture that Paul is explaining to us that God’s will is to be able to do more than we could ever ask or imagine. He is making it known that there is no limit when it comes to the Lord’s answer to our prayers. The last part of this verse is very telling, it states “…according to the power that works in us.” The Holy Spirit also called the Spirit of Truth is that power. As you develop a relationship with the Him, He will begin to grow and strengthen your inner man so that your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ can be established in your heart, Ephesians 3:16-17.

As your spirit man starts to mature through the power of the Holy Spirit and you begin to take your spiritual life seriously, you will see that your prayers will become more powerful. That is why it is essential that we make sure that we rely on the Holy Spirit’s help to guide us when it comes to our prayers. He is the One that will assist in your prayers being delivered powerfully and effectively.

Take a moment to reflect on your life prior to becoming a Christian or even when you barely got saved. Your prayers were probably dry, had no power, and if you’re honest weren’t getting answered 9 times out of 10. That is because one key element was missing, the Holy Ghost!

As a child of God, you should want to have a life that is filled with abundance as the Lord promises us in John 10:10 as well as this verse of Scripture that I have highlighted Ephesians 3:20. That is why we have to learn how we are to have successful and strong prayer that will reach the throne of grace. If you do not have a relationship with the Holy Spirit, it is going to be more difficult for you to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17) because the power source that this ability comes from is the third person of the trinity, the Spirit of God!

Power in prayer1

The Holy Spirit helps you pray the Word of God:

1 Chronicles 17:23 “And now, O Lord, the word which You have spoken concerning Your servant and concerning his house, let it be established forever, and do as You have said.”

There are so many different ways that God’s Spirit helps us with our prayer life. One of the most significant ones is aiding us in praying the Word of God. In this passage we can see that the writer of 1 Chronicles is praying that a Word spoken by the Lord would be established forever. It is the same way for us as children of God today, we can come to the Lord with His Word which is like heavenly currency and give Him back His Word pertaining to our situation.

The Bible is filled with His promises to us that He wants to fulfill. As long as it is in the Lord’s will for your life He is faithful to provide you with all or your needs, Philippians 4:19. Find Scriptures that are pertaining to your situation and marinate on them, pray them, and give them back to God. James 4:2-3 articulates it perfectly when he states, “You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.”

Taking a deeper look into these two verses of Scripture we can see that the Lord is giving us clear advice when asking Him for what we want or need in our lives. The key parts to these passages are “you do not have because you do not ask” and “you ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.” If we do not open up our mouths and let God know what we desire and want from Him, we are not going to get it.

The second part I am highlighting is even more important because the Lord is telling us that if what we are asking Him for is not lining up with what we know is right in His eyes, we might as well just forget about it all together. If what you are praying for is out of selfishness and greed you can rest assured that you probably will not get that prayer answered. That is why the Holy Spirit is extremely necessary to our prayer life because He will give you that check in your spirit if you are asking God for something that is contrary to His Word.

Remember, the Lord puts His Word even above His own Name, Psalm 138:2. That should give you an idea of just how important the Word of God really is. The ministry of the Holy Spirit in regards to praying the Scripture is bringing them to our remembrance (John 14:26) when they pertain to what we are praying for. He is also the One that will reveal the meanings of the passages in the Bible (2 Peter 1:20-21) as He is the One that inspired every single one of them, 2 Timothy 3:16!

There have been times in my life when I am trying to pray a verse of Scripture but it escapes my memory for a moment. Then, the Holy Spirit will bring it to my recollection at the exact moment that I need it. A good example of when you need the Word of God during prayer is when you are praying for someone else. The Holy Spirit might give you a verse of Scripture specifically for the person that you are praying for who needs to hear it in that exact moment. That is the beautiful thing about the precious gift that God has given to us, He is God’s Spirit sharing the love of God to anyone that is willing to receive it.

Another role of the Holy Spirit in regards to our prayer life is making sure that we are aligned with God’s will for our lives. He is not going to come into agreement with one of your prayers if it is contrary to the Word of God that He Himself inspired. For instance: if you are praying to receive another woman’s husband as your own because you feel like the Lord told you he was yours, you can guarantee that the Holy Spirit will not help bring that prayer to God. It is critical to include God’s Holy Spirit in your daily life and in your daily prayers so that you will not be led astray.

Supernatural prayer through the Holy Spirit:

1 Corinthians 14:1-2 “Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.”

One ministry of the Holy Spirit is to give every Christian the ability to speak to God in our Heavenly Language. Because of the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ we now have the precious gift of God’s Spirit dwelling in us. Before Jesus died on the cross for our sins, the Holy Spirit would fill God’s children for a period of time to complete certain tasks that the Lord needed them to accomplish.

Once Jesus ascended back to the Father in heaven, He was able to send God’s Holy Spirit to be with the disciples as well as indwell in them, John 16:5-7. We see this evidence in many bible verses throughout the New Testament. At the point of salvation when you accept Jesus Christ into your heart as your Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit comes in you and takes residence, 1 Corinthians 12:13. The Lord promises that God’s Spirit will never leave us once we receive Him, John 14:16.

The Spiritual prayer language with evidence of speaking with other tongues that Paul is talking about in these passages have to do with the infilling or baptism of the Holy Spirit. Every single believer has the ability to speak with other tongues which is one of the kinds of prayers made specifically between you and God. It is our own spirit man having dialogue with our Heavenly Father with the Help of the Holy Spirit directing the words that we speak.

Why is the infilling of the Holy Spirit one of the most important things to the life of every Christian? For one it edifies and empowers our own lives as believers of Christ and invites the presence of God. The second reason that your Heavenly Prayer language is essential is because you are speaking “mysteries” or “hidden and secret things” to God in heaven. The reason why that is so critical is because that is one of your most needed spiritual weapons against the enemy.

You best believe the devil and his demons are listening to everything that you say: trying to find open doorways to gain legal right into your life, obtaining information so that they can strategize, and finding ways to use your words against you. When you speak in tongues or your Heavenly language, the devil and his demons cannot understand what you are saying, but your Father in Heaven can.

In my own experience with the baptism of the Holy Spirit, I did not receive my Heavenly Language until a couple of years after I was saved. God’s Spirit was still guiding me, leading me, and helping me get set free from the demonic bondage that I was in but I didn’t have my prayer language as a weapon to use against the enemy. I will never forget the day that I received my Spiritual language; I was in my own bedroom and had been asking the Lord to fill me for quite some time now.

As I was worshipping and praising, Jesus filled me with Holy Spirit with the evidence of me speaking in tongues. He is the one that fills us with His Spirit, Matthew 3:11. I had never felt a love like I had felt that day. I will note that nobody laid hands on my, nobody prayed for me, and nobody was with me. It was just me and the Lord. He tells us in Luke 11:13, “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

Conclusion

One thing that we can conclude with these verses of Scripture that I have highlighted in regards to the Holy Spirit being our prayer partner is that we need Him in every kind of prayer that we initiate. Whether it is praying for us when we can’t find the right words to say, helping us in having more effective and powerful prayers, aiding us in praying God’s Word, or helping us pray in our Heavenly language. Whatever the case is, He plays an essential role to every believer of the Lord Jesus Christ.

If you haven’t acknowledged Him or invited Him to help you while you pray, I implore you to do so. It will completely change your life and you will never regret it. He has helped me so much in this area; I can’t even begin to explain all of the ways to you. The most important one is aiding me in praying the perfect prayers to the Father in Heaven. It doesn’t get better than that!
