The Spiritual Laws of God-The Power of Your Tongue!
Why is Your Tongue so Powerful?
Often times, the majority of us underestimate the power of one of the smallest members of our body and that is our tongue.
James 3:5-7 states “Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind.”
Then James continues to go into detail about the dangers of one’s tongue, James 3:8-12 states, “But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening? Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh.”
So much to unpack from these powerful Scriptures from the Word of God! James is showing us in these verses that our tongue can boast, kindle fires, has the ability to defile our entire body, cannot be tamed, is evil, and full of deadly poison. Then he describes one of the most important takeaways from his description of our tongue and that is that it has the ability to bring forth blessings and curses.
A lot of Christians read powerful passages in the Holy Bible like these and don’t really take them seriously. Or, they won’t take the time out to truly understand what they are saying. This is how a lot of us get ourselves in situations where the enemy can come into our lives and establish strongholds.
James through the Holy Spirit is not just speaking a careless word; he is literally telling us how influential the words that we speak actually are. They have the power to speak life or to speak death. Once we gain an understanding of how our verbiage can shift situations we will begin to take what we say seriously.
I am going to highlight two verses of Scripture pertaining to the power of your tongue and the spiritual laws attached to them.
Proverbs 18:21
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.”
The book of Proverbs written by King Solomon is one of the most powerful books of the Bible. It is filled with spiritual rules and principles that we need to know in order to stay ahead of the devil’s tactics against us! God’s Word is meant to guide us, correct us, and instruct us on how we are to live as believers of Jesus Christ.
In this verse of Scripture we can determine that Solomon is making it known that death and life is in what you say. It is meant to be taken literally. The fact of the matter is that you can create curses or blessings over your life based off of the words spoken out of your mouth. That is why it is so important to guard your tongue from speaking hurtful words.
It is vital that you allow the Word of God to cleanse your heart and mind because it will reflect in the things you say. The Lord tells us in Proverbs 23:7 “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he…” So it is inevitable, evil things will come out of a person that has a perverse tongue and lies will come out of a person that has a lying tongue. We have to be very careful about what we let marinate in our spirit because it will eventually have an adverse effect on us.
That is why this spiritual law that God is showing us in this passage is so important. It gives us the understanding that speaking positively will bring positive outcomes and speaking negatively will bring you negatives ones. That is what the last part of the verse is referencing when it states, “…you will eat its fruit.”
In other words: what you reap is what you sow; there is no way of getting around it. If you sow negative words and actions that is what you will produce; if you sow positivity and love that is what you will produce. It is critical that you gain the understanding of the way that God’s spiritual laws work because you can unknowingly be placing word curses over your life and your family’s lives by what verbiage you are selecting to use.
Let your mouth be a mouth that praises the Lord, prays for your family, and speaks the promises of God over your life and your loved ones. Be the one that will intercede for everyone when nobody else is. Be the example that others can look at and say, “There is just something different about you!”
Examples of word curses
- “I am never going to make enough money to pay for all of my bills!”
- “I’m ugly and nobody is ever going to want to be with me!”
- “I am so stupid, why did I do that?!”
- “I am going to be sick forever!”
- “I am never going to be able to break free from this addiction!”
Have you ever been around someone that consistently speaks negatively no matter what? Even when you attempt to change the conversation, somehow it always ends up being negative. You have to be cautious about the amount of time that you spend around people like this because if you are not careful, that pessimism will begin to rub off on you. Their daily lives consist of finding ways to be miserable and that can be draining.
The reason why a person with a destructive mouth is experiencing those adverse emotions is because of the way they constantly speak. The spiritual law is stating that death and life is in your tongue. Never ever speak negative things over your life or the lives of your loved ones because the enemy can and will use your words against you!
One of the worst things that someone can do is speak word curses over their children!
For instance:
- “Why did you do that, you’re such an idiot!”
- “You are never going to amount to anything!”
- “You’re probably going to end up in jail because of how bad you are!”
- “You were a mistake from the beginning!”
People literally speak these things over their children over and over again and wonder why they aren’t prevailing in life, don’t think highly of themselves, and get in trouble with the law. The Lord gave us our children to protect and nurture them showing them the way that they should go (Proverbs 22:6), not bash and destroy them robbing them of their chance at life!
What you don’t see are the ramifications in the spirit realm, your words are giving the devil and his demons the legal right to come into your child’s life and completely destroy it. They are just sitting around waiting for you to say something that will allow them to gain access to you and your family.
The spiritual law of God told you up front that death and life is in the power of your tongue. So, what you are doing is speaking emotional death, spiritual death, mental death, and physical death over yourself and your loved ones. The devil knows this spiritual law very well and you best believe he will use it against you any chance that he can!
Examples of Words that bring Blessings
- Numbers 6:24-26 “The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace.”
- 3 John 1:2 “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.”
- 2 Corinthians 9:8 “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.”
- Ephesians 1:3 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.”
- Matthew 6:33 “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
- Ephesians 3:20 “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.”
Begin to speak the Word of God over your spouse, your children, yourself, and all of your loved ones. The Lord’s Word has power! It isn’t just letters written in a book that’s collecting dust on your shelf. Not even close, it is living and has the ability to break chains of darkness off of your life, turn your situation completely around, and fight against the enemy. It is your double-edged Sword, Hebrews 4:12.
1 Corinthians 1:18 is clear, the Apostle Paul writes, “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” The message of the cross is the Word of God. One thing that you can do is use targeted Scripture if you are struggling in an area. For instance, if you are having health issues write down a list of Bible verses pertaining to healing and begin to proclaim them over your life!
I go into more detail on the power of your tongue on my articles: The Power of Your Tongue and Proverb Scriptures that will Help You Tame Your Tongue!
Proverbs 21:23
“Whoever guards his mouth and tongue Keeps his soul from troubles.”
Here is another Proverb verse in the Bible which is also written by King Solomon. This too has one of God’s spiritual laws attached to it. Breaking down this verse we can determine that the Lord is giving us definitive instructions on guarding our mouth and tongue.
He is clearly stating that if we safeguard our mouths it will keep our soul out of trouble. In other words God is giving us another stipulation, if we are able to think before we speak instead of saying the first thing that comes to our minds it will keep us from starting unnecessary drama.
This is particularly the case when you are upset at your spouse, family member, or children. The reason why this spiritual law is important to abide by is because you can open up the door to the enemy because of the negative things that you are saying.
For instance:
If you get into an argument with your spouse but you failed to guard your mouth during the disagreement you can say things that the devil can use to cause strife. He will take that moment of you being upset, and turn it into anger, and then bitterness if it isn’t handled.
The Word of God tells us in Ephesians 4:26-27 “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil.” If we don’t monitor our tongue it can easily lead to us saying something that will lead to you going to bed angry and possibly created division in your marriage.
That is why the Lord gives us these spiritual rules and regulations, it prevents the devil from coming into our lives to divide, destroy, and cause chaos. Once we can recognize that life is completely spiritual, we will take God’s stipulations more seriously.
Conclusion
There is an extreme amount of power in the words that come out of our mouths. We have the ability to completely change an entire atmosphere with the praise and worship that comes from our lips. Or, we have the capability to destroy our lives by the way that we speak. The choice will always be yours.
We have to come to the realization that life is completely spiritual and there is a demonic realm that you cannot see that is just waiting for something to come out of your mouth that they can use against you. That is how they operate. The devil and his demons cannot just come into your life and wreak havoc without the legal right to do so.
If you are facing demonic oppression you have to take inventory of your life. Are there any open doors that you have opened to allow the enemy to come in and create destruction? I had to learn this lesson the hard way, so now I am very cautious about what I say, what I do, how I act, and I allow the Holy Spirit to lead me and guide me into all truth, John 16:13.
