7 Steps To Fighting Spiritual Oppression-Real Talk!

Take Your Life Back! (1)

Spiritual oppression is no joke and if it is not taken control of, it can ruin your life. People want to believe that Satan is a figment of the imagination or a character that was made up and passed along from generation to generation. No, that is so far from the truth the devil is real and wants to wreak havoc in your life in any way that he can. He is roaming around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour, 1 Peter 5:8.

I know first-hand what it means to be spiritually oppressed and had to deal with the mental, physical, and spiritual attacks from the enemy for almost 4 yrs. I had to face it head on if I was going to get myself out of the torment that I was in. I put all of my trust and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and He helped me overcome and triumph over the enemy. You can do it too, it is not impossible but you have to be willing to make the choice to give your life to Christ so that He can help you fight back!

*All highlighted scripture listed in the information given below has a link attached for your reference, study His Word*

What is demonic oppression

1. Understand what you are dealing with:

You can’t contest against something when you have no idea what it is. Spiritual Oppression exists and it can take a hold of your life and completely destroy it, if you let it! One of the main ways that people become demonically oppressed is because of open doors that they have opened up in their lives knowingly or unknowingly. This was the case for me; I ignorantly opened up doors to the enemy that I was not able to easily shut.

If you haven’t read my blogs on Spiritual Oppression-The Dangers of Open Doors to the Enemy: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, and Part 5. Please do, it will give you a complete revelation of the devil’s tactics so that you can know what to avoid.

Here are some signs of Spiritual Oppression:

  • You have thoughts that pop up in your head that you know are not yours. (ideas of suicide when you are typically a happy person, thoughts of harming yourself or others when it is something you would never do, thoughts that put you in a deep depression). The way that the enemy (Satan and his minions) work is that they find every possible way to shoot flaming arrows (thoughts) at your mind in the hopes that you will begin to believe the thoughts as your own.
  • You want nothing to do with the things of the Lord as you once did: your spiritual desires are completely nonexistent when before you were on fire for the Lord. This is exactly what the enemy wants, the farther away you are from God the easier it is to keep you bound! You will find it difficult to praise, worship, and meditate on the Lord’s Word.
  • You begin to doubt how important you are to the Lord: One of the main things that Satan loves to do is to make you think that you are not worthy of the Lord’s love. One example is:  he will put in your mind “You will never to able to fulfill the purpose that God has for you because of what you did in your past.” He will constantly throw in your face your shortcomings, flaws, past behaviors, and anything else that will have you doubt your worth. Satan is a liar and father of lies, John 8:44.
  • You begin to become uncertain of how amazing God is: You’ve gone through some trials and tribulations and you begin to blame the Lord for them. This is another one of the enemy’s tactics because if he can get you to second guess Whom the Lord really is, he’s already one step ahead of you. A lot of people that once loved God have backslidden because of circumstances that they have endured.

Once you have a full understanding of what you are dealing with it is time to take back every bit of what the devil stole from you. Satan is a defeated foe, the Lord has already won the fight for you but you have to believe that wholeheartedly so that you can gain your power back!

The Word of God tells us in Joel 2:25 “So I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the crawling locust, the consuming locust, And the chewing locust, My great army which I sent among you.” The Lord is making it clear that He is in the business of restoration and this is one of His promises. You need to let the devil know that you are done playing games and enough is enough!

Jesus Christ

2. Give your life to Christ:

The spiritual oppression that you are facing is beyond your ability to conquer if you decide to deal with it on your own. The enemy is stronger than you, has more tricks up his sleeve, and knows your every weakness. When you give your life to the Lord Jesus Christ, you are allowing Him to come into your heart and begin to work on your behalf. He will give you the strength that you need to overcome the tormenting thoughts, the overwhelming emotions, and the mental state that spiritual oppression puts you in Philippians 4:13. Remember Satan has already been defeated (Colossians 2:15) so no matter how hard he tries, he is no match for the Lord.

So how does one go about giving their life to Jesus? In order for someone to be saved, you don’t have to go through a legalistic process that you must follow step by step. The Word of God is very clear on what you must do to be saved “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” Romans 10:9. Breaking down this scripture we see that it’s a confession of you having Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and what He did for you on the cross but it goes deeper than just that, you must also have absolute belief in your heart as well.

Having Faith to believe in someone that you cannot physically see can be a challenge for anyone but that is why Faith and Trust are so important. Once you ask the Lord to come into your heart and reside there you will receive the Helper which is the Holy Spirit to begin to help you shift your way of thinking as well as the condition of your heart, John 16:13. You now have assistance to guide you and keep you on the right track, help you fight the devil and his demons, and strengthen you when you have to face adversity. His promise to us is that He will never leave you or forsake you Hebrews 13:5.

One of the main things that you want to keep in mind is that Christ is not seeking a superficial connection with you. He wants to communicate with you, spend time with you, He wants a relationship that has depth and meaning and one that is not artificial. Don’t just give Him attention in service on a Sunday or when you are in desperate need of His support but haven’t spoken to Him in months. Just like you speak to your family and friends on a frequent basis you want to commune with your Heavenly Father significantly more. He died for every one of us on that cross to give you the option to choose Him. There is no greater love John 15:13.

Repent

3. Repent:

What does it meant to repent? When you repent, you are completely surrendering to God and His Purpose which includes turning away from all sin. It is an absolute change from the old you, letting go of the things that prevent you from strengthening your relationship with the Lord. It is a renewing of your mind Romans 12:2. It is going to take humility and trust and you have to be willing to completely humble yourself before Jesus professing that you are a sinner but you genuinely want to transform the way you’ve been living and have a connection with Him.

You are not alone, every single one of us struggles with one thing or another that creates a barrier between us and the Lord. The fact of the matter is sin comes in many different forms and one misconception is that a sin that is not exposed externally is not as extreme as one that is hidden behind closed doors. Sin is sin and there is no way of getting around it.

So how does you repenting help fight spiritual oppression? When you live in sin, you are giving the devil legal right to cause destruction in your life. The demons are energized when you participate in things that the Lord specifically tells us not to do in His Word. Sin gives them the ability to oppress, torment, afflict, and harm you because you have open doors that they can come in and wreak havoc.

That is why Jesus is so adamant about the repercussions of sin in the Word of God. He specifically says in Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” That is a significant statement! He isn’t warning us because he wants to be mean, He cautions us because He knows how much sin can destroy every aspect of your very existence. It will lead to your demise.

In your walk as a Christian you will still have adversity and those flaming arrows will still get thrown in your path, but the closer you are to Jesus and are walking in His authority Luke 10:19, the more Power you will have to extinguish those missiles before they even penetrate. In order to do so, you have to be cleansed of all unrighteousness which is what the blood of Jesus has already done for you 1 John 1:9 but you have to do your part and repent.

The bottom line is the more immorality you have in your life the more ability the enemy has to come and kill, steal, and destroy John 10:10. Only you know deep down inside the iniquities that you are truly dealing with, ask the Lord to help you triumph over them. One main factor to keep in mind is that you don’t want to just focus on known sin like fornication, adultery, idolatry, murder, etc.

You need to make sure that you are evaluating the sins that are established in your heart like lust, animosity, bitterness, unforgiveness, jealously, resentment, etc. These sins are just as bad as the other ones. Remember, sin is sin is sin!

Church

4. Find a church to call home:

Once you have accepted the Lord Jesus Christ into your heart you want to search for a church that can teach you the Word of God and guide you through the salvation process. Dealing with spiritual oppression is a very difficult thing to cope with and you are going to want to be surrounded by other Christians who have already been through this type of situation and can support you, pray for you, and answer questions that you are going to have. There is no better way to fight these attacks than to speak to those that have fought them and prevailed. Also, the Word of God is very clear on how important it is to gather with other brothers and sisters in Christ Hebrews 10:25.

Top things to look for when searching for your church home:

One of the most important things to look for is whether or not they are providing you with the undiluted Word of God. When the pastor preaches, does he follow exactly what the bible says or does he sway away from it? Ask the Lord to give you direction to ensure that you are planted in a church that is not going to lead you astray.

Another significant thing to look for is if the church is led by the Holy Spirit. You will be able to tell if the Holy Spirit is operating in the building as soon as you step inside, you can feel it! One sure sign of whether or not the Spirit of God is moving in the atmosphere is if everything from the worship, the sermon, and anything in between is pointing to Jesus Christ. The Lord is the only One that deserves all the praise, glory and honor.

Search for a church that is going to teach you the Word of God through classes, bible studies, etc. Once you become a Christian it is extremely vital that you are growing in the things of the Lord. You do not want to be uninformed walking through life with no direction. Any ministry should have things put in place that are going to help new members grow in the Lord’s Word and the things of the Lord.

Those are some of the more imperative factors to take into consideration when deciding what church you are going to attend. You want to ask the Lord for guidance and discernment when making these kinds of decisions. He is never going to steer you the wrong way. If something doesn’t feel right after you attend a church, that is the Holy Spirit giving you a check that you need to look for somewhere else.

Of course there are other elements to keep in mind when determining the church of your choice; like were they inviting, do they have day care or children’s church (if you have children), were they friendly, did they follow up with you about your experience? Questions like that will assist you in ultimately concluding where you will join but they are nowhere near as significant as the three listed above.

At the end of the day, you want to make sure that you find the right church that is going to make you feel at peace with where you have chosen but also teach you the Word of God. Remember, the Holy Spirit is your guide living on the inside of you leading you into all truth.

word of God

5. Immerse yourself into the Word of God (Bible):

When dealing with spiritual oppression you are fighting against an enemy that you cannot see. Regardless of whether you are a believer, just becoming a believer, or don’t believe at all it will not negate the fact that Satan really does exist. He wants to wreak havoc in your life: kill, steal and destroy you as much as you let him John 10:10. Saturating yourself with the Word of God gives you weapons to use when the enemy comes against you with the tormenting thoughts, emotions, and feelings.

The Lord’s Word is Powerful, Living, and Sharper than any two-edged Sword Hebrews 4:12. It will help counteract against any fiery dart being thrown in your direction. It is your Armor that you use to keep you protected at all times against the wiles of the devil Ephesians 6:10-18. Please read my blog on the Armor of God, it will give you an insight on the Lord’s protective covering that He provides every one of us with.

The battlefield is in our minds, an example of this type of warfare is: the adversary loves to tell us how worthless and unimportant we are but God’s Word states “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them”-Genesis 1:27. So if God created every single one of us in His Image, how is it that we can we be so insignificant?

The more scripture you have embedded in your heart, the more arsenals you have to combat with when Satan tries to invade your mind. Those oppressive assaults happen more frequently in your mind because that is where the combat zone is, he wants you to be weak, vulnerable, and faithless because that prevents you from becoming a more powerful Christian. The fact is that the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is the same power that dwells in you, Romans 8:11.

He knows that a Christian with power is his worst enemy. Don’t ever forget that the devil has already been defeated and the Lord has given every one of us the ability to conquer all of his schemes Luke 10:19. If you have the Bible deep down in your spirit, it is going to be difficult for the adversary to continue to keep you bound and spiritually oppressed.

The primary take away is you don’t want to give up; you have to keep fighting this battle with tenacity and perseverance. Don’t allow him to keep you shackled, Fight back! I had to fight and fight for almost 4 years of my life against mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual oppression at the hand of the devil. He almost took me out, but I wasn’t having it; I got myself back up and I fought back. With the help of the Lord, I am free today to tell my testimony!

Pray

6. Develop a prayer life:

Prayer is communication with your Heavenly Father, it is when you set time aside devoted specifically for Him and Him alone. It is a two way conversation meaning that you don’t want to just come to Jesus asking for things that you need or want but coming to Him seeking His will and guidance so that you are walking in your divine purpose. You most definitely want to express to Him what you desire Philippians 4:6-7 explains that you want to make your requests made known with prayer and thanksgiving. You are to worry about nothing but instead pray about everything Matthew 6:34.

Make it a point to Pray throughout your day without ceasing 1 Thessalonians 5:17. Remember, you are conversing with the Lord and you want to interact with Him as much as possible. So, how does prayer tie into spiritual warfare? When we pray, we are activating God’s Power allowing us to be effective against the attacks of the enemy. During those moments when you have those disturbing feelings, are getting physically bombarded, or emotionally taken over, you need to pray against it.

In order for you to disarm the devil you have to have the spiritual awareness that tells you how you need to do so. Ask God to open up your eyes spiritually so that you can see the enemy’s devices and understand how to fight against them using the Armor that the Lord has given to you Ephesians 6:10-20. Within your own might you are powerless, but through the power of the Holy Spirit, you can overcome the strongest and vilest demon you will ever have to face.

Another advantage that prayer will give you is the Holy Spirit will alert and help you when Satan is attempting to attack you permitting you to take the appropriate measures to protect yourself. Trust and believe one of the greatest goals of the enemy is to make sure that your relationship with the Lord is completely non-existent that way when he uses his deceptive strategies against you, you will not know how to defend yourself.

Pray for protection, pray for wisdom, pray for guidance, pray over your family, pray for strength, pray for your weaknesses, pray for your family’s salvation, pray for others, and the list goes on and on. In other words you want to pray about everything even though your Heavenly Father already knows what you need; He still wants to hear from you, Matthew 6:8!

Another imperative part of prayer is to pray in your Heavenly language (tongues) which you will receive when you are baptized with the Holy Spirit. This will take your prayers to imaginable levels. I have written blogs on the Lord’s Spirit and how critical He is to our walk with Jesus Christ. They are: The Holy Spirit-Our Prayer Partner, The Holy Spirit-the Spirit of Power, Love, and a Sound mind, and The Holy Spirit-Our Helper. They will give you a breakdown of how the Holy Spirit works in our lives.

Never be afraid to give God your entire heart; He is the only One that can truly protect it! Be sensitive to the Lord’s Voice so that you can hear back from Him regarding every situation you encounter. The truth is He will not always respond exactly when you want Him to but He is always right on time!

clean heart

7. Cleanse your heart:

The Lord has no interest in what you look like on the outside; you can be the cutest thing in the world, have the nicest clothes, drive the fanciest car, and living in the biggest house, that means nothing to Jesus. He is concerned with the condition of your heart 1 Samuel 16:7. You want your heart to be clean and pure so that it is ready to be filled with the Word of God and His Love.

If you have pride, hate, jealousy, envy, lust, and unforgiveness infiltrating your heart, where is there room for Jesus? By consuming your spirit with all of these negative feelings you are allowing Satan to access those emotions and exacerbate them. What this will do is welcome spiritual oppression. It is going to be difficult for you to fight tormenting thoughts that devour your mind if what you have in your heart is wicked continually?

You have to leave no room for the enemy to take residence in your life get rid of all of those negative feelings that you have allowed to build up inside. Psalm 51:10 says it beautifully when David writes, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.” You have to be willing to purify your heart by getting yourself submerged in the Lord’s Scriptures.

They will begin to saturate your spirit so that when you want to release those unfavorable emotions, the Holy Spirit will begin to convict you. He will bring to your remembrance Scriptures that you have read that go against your actions. You will start seeing such a drastic change in the way you talk, the way you walk, how you dress, and you will no longer want to have these horrible emotions because they separate you from God.

The spiritual oppression will begin to subside because you are taking all of the enemy’s devices away from him. By living in sin whether it be physical or in your heart you are on the devil’s team being used as his vessel whether you know it or not. When you refrain from all of the evil behavior, you are taking your authority back letting him know that you are a child of the Living God and he is under your feet Romans 16:20.

You don’t have to deal with his harassment alone because you have the Lord on your side that will fight your battles for you Deuteronomy 20:4. I know first-hand how overwhelming it can feel when you’re fighting a spiritual battle with an opponent that you cannot physically see. I had to fight the devil for almost 4 years of my life but I never gave up.

Jesus was with me every step of the way. The Word of God promises us that He will never leave you nor forsake you no matter what Hebrews 13:5! If He did it for me, He can do it for you too. Keep pressing forward to your victory!
