The Importance of Renewing Your Mind
What does it mean to renew your mind?
In order to have an idea of what it means to renew your frame of mind let’s take a look at the verse of Scripture that pertains to this kind of transformation. Romans 12:2 states, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Breaking down this passage out of the Bible written by the Apostle Paul we can determine that the things of this world can influence your mindset.
So, what is the number one way that we can ensure the transformation of our thought process? The primary way that a person can transform their mind is by getting into the Word of God. Hebrews 4:12 details, “ For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
The Lord’s Word is not just pages in a book that you read from time to time. It is literally your Sword that you use both offensively and defensively against the schemes and the wiles of the devil. The moment that you became a Christian the gift of the Holy Spirit comes into your body to dwell. One of His key roles is to help you understand and remember Scripture.
The more of the Bible that you have stored in your memory bank, the more that the Spirit of God has to pull from. This is what will help you change your frame of mind from negative to positive.
For instance:
- When you are being consumed with negative thoughts that the enemy is throwing in your direction; the Holy Spirit can help you combat those thoughts with Scripture.
- When you are being consumed with thoughts that are making you want to go back to your old ways; the Holy Spirit will convict you with the Word of God.
- When you are showing characteristics that are contrary to what the Word of God says; the Holy Spirit will guide you in the right direction.
The Lord’s Word is saturated with Scriptures that are meant to restore, renew, convict, correct, enhance, and transform. If you take the Bible at face value, apply it to your daily life, and believe that it is truly the inspired Word of God because it is; it will completely change your entire life. I am a walking testimony of the Power of the Holy Scriptures. They have the ability to take your mess and brokenness and turn it into His masterpiece.

I am going to go over some Scriptures that can help you understand the necessity of renewing your frame of mind.
Romans 12:1
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”
A lot of Christians are very familiar with Romans 12:2 which goes into detail of the transformation of your mind but they don’t go back and take a look at the verse before. Here we can see that the Apostle Paul is explaining to us that our bodies are to be shaped and molded to be acceptable to God. We are to be a living sacrifice allowing our temple (bodies) to be suitable for the Holy Spirit to reside.
In order for us to live a holy life, we have to have a transformation of our entire mind-set; there is no getting around it. The moment that you become a Christian, you are a new creature. 2 Corinthians 5:17 details, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” The previous person that you were is left behind and you become a new person no longer wanting to live the way that you used to.
What does that mean? This means that you adjust: the negative way that you think, the inappropriate way that you talk, the improper way that you act, and any other behaviors that are contrary to the Word of God. Allowing the Bible to saturate your heart and mind is the best way that you can make concrete changes. One of the primary roles of the Holy Spirit is to help you make a complete transformation. The key is that you have to be willing to allow Him to do so.
He will convict you when you need to be convicted, guide you when you need to be directed, and lead you when you need to be led. The more Scripture that you have stored up in your memory bank the more that He has to pull from. We have to remember that we were given all authority here on Earth when the Lord stated that “it is finished,” John 19:30.
Jesus came and died on the cross at Calvary and did the work that needed to be done and is now seated at the right hand of God, Ephesians 1:20. It is now our responsibility to make the necessary changes to ensure that we are representing Him to the best of our abilities. However, He didn’t leave us unequipped; He sent us the Helper, the Holy Spirit Whom will support us and strengthen us as we continue our walk as believers of Jesus Christ.
John 14:26
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”
We can never underestimate the role that the Holy Spirit plays in the life of every born again Christian. He is the author (2 Timothy 3:16) and the interpreter of the Lord’s Word (2 Peter 1:20) so what better Teacher can you have than the Spirit of God? In this passage of Scripture we can see that John is telling us that we will have a Helper that will teach us all things.
It is clear that He is the One that enlightens us about the Word of God especially when it comes to the transformation of our frame of mind. John also states something revealing when he says, “…and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.” So, what was John referring to? He was referring to everything disclosed in the Word of God.
I can’t tell you how significant it is to get into your Bible daily, it isn’t called your double-edged Sword for no reason.
It will help you:
- Fight the negative thoughts that the devil throws at you mind
- Help you overcome sin
- Give you courage, strength, power, healing, and so much more
- Help you warfare against every scheme that the enemy formulates against you
- It will change your entire mindset from negative to positive
In order for you to make the changes needed to live a victorious life as a Christian, you need to read your Word, study it, and apply it to your life. If you don’t, you are going to be fighting in a battle completely unarmed. The devil will chew you up and spit you out. He doesn’t play fair because he understands how powerful it is when a believer renews their frame of mind. He will stop at nothing to ensure that doesn’t happen.
I had to learn this lesson the hard way! I was not aware of the schemes of the devil and in fact I didn’t even truly believed that he existed. Boy, was I wrong! I got myself involved in things that were completely against the Word of God and the devil almost completely destroyed my life because of it. My mind was not set on the things of God and I paid for it tremendously.
These next verses of Scripture are going to go into detail as far as what to do with the thoughts that the enemy shoots at your mind continually.
2 Corinthians 10:4-5
“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”
Here we can see in these passages of Scripture that the Apostle Paul is explicitly telling us what we are to do when thoughts are planted in our minds. We are to take every single thought that is contrary to the Word of God and cast it down before it begins to take root. The reason why this is so important is because a thought can easily turn into a stronghold.
The enemy knows that all he has to do is have you come into agreement with the fiery arrows that he is throwing at you. Once you do, he now has an open door to legally come into your life and wreak havoc. Instead of obeying what the Lord clearly tells us in these verses of Scripture, you allowed the thoughts to marinate and penetrate.
Understanding the enemy’s devices is vital for you to live a successful life as a believer of Jesus Christ. When you fail to cast down negative thoughts, the devil will take those thoughts and intensify them. Before you know it your anxiety has turned into full blown fear which leads to depression and every other adverse emotion that you can think of.
It is imperative to take every thought that you know isn’t yours and cast it out. Rebuke it in the Name of Jesus and do not let it fester in your mind even for a moment. The enemy and his kingdom is extremely crafty and will make you feel like the thoughts that you are having are yours. The devil is a liar! You will know if it is from the enemy because it will be contrary to God’s Word.
Conclusion
One of the most important things for you to do once you become a believer of Jesus Christ is renew you mind. Saturate you mind and heart with the Word of God. The Holy Spirit is the One that will guide you and lead you into all truth. He will convict you and correct you when you are heading in the wrong direction.
One of the primary ways that the Lord speaks is through His Word. The thing is it will be hard for Him to convey messages to you if: you never open up you Bible, you never pray, you never fast, you don’t spend time praying in your heavenly language, and you don’t take time to develop an intimate relationship with the Lord.
God’s Word has the power to completely change your mindset from negative to positive but you have to be willing to put in the work. Allow the Lord to renew your mind so that you can boldly walk in the purpose that God has for your life!
